There was a Nordic-folk-pop song that was a pretty big hit around '97 I think it was. I think I first heard it on NPR radio in the States, but it got play on other stations and presumably around the world.
I can hear it in my head easily, but don't remember the lyrics, singer or title. Female lead. Quirky song, sort of a 'Nordic rap' but with a sweet (not hard), playful edge to it. Actually, I think one fragment of the vocals was "can't you see..."

Come to think of it, a better description would be probably be indie / alt / orchestral-pop. But it certainly does have some folk-pop sensibilities, yes.

It's a different kind of Nordic folk music, but Jazz På Svenska (Jazz in Swedish) is one of my favourite records. Beautiful piano and double bass interpretations of old Swedish folk songs collected from all over the country.

It's still the best selling Swedish jazz record of all time, it's part of the Swedish cultural canon and the lead track Visa Från Utanmyra is one of the most iconic Swedish songs of all time.

But yeah, Jan Johansson is an absolute legend. I so wish he wasn't taken from us so soon. Such a distinctive touch of the keys he had, so delicate.
Thanks! xD I looked at the instance real quick at I'm AMAZED at the fact that there are Swedish communities outside of Big Tech driven platforms. :D I'll have to give it some careful consideration though, since there is just a LOAD of politics (naturally at the moment....) and it brings me back to why I left FB in the first place back in the day xD (2019?)
Yeah, politics overload is natural at the moment, and quite depressing, given that it looks like we'll get more of the fucking Tidö disaster.
Beyond that it's been a nice /local to have access to over the years though, and I like supporting local endeavours. I think nation based instances are one of my favourite features of the Fediverse.
All these are "neo-folk" (synthesizers and stuff that imagines what music that we have no surviving sources for would sound like. Contrary to popular belief, there is no surviving music or tunings from Viking Age music. We have no idea what it would have sounded like.)
An actual Scandinavian folk band would be something like Svanevit, just a few people only playing traditional instruments and songs. Their album, Rikedom och gåvor is an arrangement of traditional songs from Skåne for traditional strings and wood instruments.
I don't know which artist(s) in particular your rant is directed at, but Forndom specifically plays acoustic instruments, starting with Dauðra Dura. Also, check out this interview in which he specifically mentions how contemporary musicians and religious communities lack authenticity. Which is FINE, by the way, as long as you don't advertise it as anything else.
Would I risk evisceration to say I just recently discovered Aurora’s music?
She’s a Norwegian singer, so she should qualify as Nordic. Not sure folk is the right label though. I’ve heard her music described as faerie pop, though it’s officially just pop. But it’s more than that. Like Björk, Sia, and maybe others, she has the weirdness factor as well.

Yes, I listen to some heilung songs like Traust and Norupo (got exposed to them from Senua too). Come to think of it, Skyrim is kinda nordic too although a bit more towards folklore. I'll be checking out Forndom, thanks for the recommendation.
