Bummer. Had me in the first half.

Good thing I didn't get my hopes up.

[-] mohab@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago

I am reviving Quake as a fighting game.

[-] Janx@piefed.social 12 points 9 hours ago

Oh? I'm releasing Monopoly as a survival horror game. It'll be just as good and meaningful...

It's already a survival horror game with the wrong people.

[-] decolo@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago

Well the original Landlords Game was about the horror of surviving the whims of landlords.... (kinda, if you squint)

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 hours ago

That dominion trailer hits pretty hard though

Blizzard never skimps on cinematic storytelling

[-] Newsteinleo@infosec.pub 1 points 41 minutes ago

Yeah but, the Blizzard of old is gone, it's now a shell of it's former self.

[-] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 11 points 12 hours ago

Oh, Ghost 2.x.

Hopefully it goes just as well as the original Ghost.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 9 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

This one will actually get released, but it will suck major donkey dick because it's made by modern day Blizzard instead of circa 2002 Blizzard.

[-] spy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 15 hours ago

Still out of ideas for new games then.

[-] vrek@programming.dev 7 points 14 hours ago

I hate when they remake classic games as a totally different genre. Imagine if they did that in other media... "We are making a new breakfast club movie... It will be a space opera!"... "everyone loved hit me baby one more time by Britney Spears, we are remaking it as a mumble rap"... "the taming of the shrew by William Shakespeare was successful, what if we made as an animated TV show like Rick and morty?"

I'm all for remaking starcraft but keep it as an rts with updated graphics and modern features.

[-] Sina@beehaw.org 1 points 6 hours ago

“We are making a new breakfast club movie… It will be a space opera!”

I would love to watch that actually ..

[-] vrek@programming.dev 1 points 5 hours ago

But totally different from the original movie

[-] justOnePersistentKbinPlease@fedia.io 12 points 12 hours ago

the taming of the shrew by William Shakespeare was successful, what if we made as an animated TV show like Rick and morty.

I hate to be the guy, but Simpsons at their peak retold a number of classics including Lord of the Flies and Hamlet.

[-] missingno@fedia.io 5 points 11 hours ago

I miss the days when development cycles were short enough that spinoffs could be released alongside main series games without feeling like one was detracting from the other. I miss the days when every big IP had a goofy and experimental straight-to-handheld companion piece.

[-] tuckerm@feddit.online 9 points 12 hours ago

I'm OK with it because some of them have been good, like the Metroid first-person shooter games. (I haven't played them, but I know that people liked them.)

I think one of the reasons it doesn't work well with movies is that changing the genre of a movie also changes its tone. But with games, the gameplay genre is different from the narrative genre. You can make a strategy game, platformer, or shooter with the same tone, and so it stays "true" to the original setting, and it makes sense as being in the same fictional universe.

[-] xylol@leminal.space 4 points 13 hours ago

That sort of happens a lot though

[-] vrek@programming.dev 1 points 13 hours ago

Not nearly as much as in gaming. It does I music a lot but mostly small productions like a single person making a blue grass cover of a metal song, not here's 100 million budget and a full nationwide ad campaign.

[-] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 7 points 15 hours ago

If I can't spend $100_000 to win in this game im not interested anyway

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus -1 points 15 hours ago

I dont think turning StarCraft into Destiny is a good idea. But then again StarCraft has never had any original ideas in the IP.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 2 hours ago

It feels pretty reductive to say something doesn't have original ideas. Pretty much every story has been told in one way or another at this point in history, especially if we get really reductive about it. It doesn't mean things can't be interesting or unique.

StarCraft was supposed to be a Warhammer 40k game if memory serves me. But GW said nah, and so blizzard made StarCraft. Old story, could be bullshit, but the similarities are sort of obvious.

[-] smeg@feddit.uk 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

And Warcraft was meant to be Warhammer Fantasy!

but the similarities are sort of obvious

Absolutely, watch the trailer for this new game and tell me it couldn't be a Space Marine game

[-] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 14 points 15 hours ago

To be completely fair, Starcraft: Ghost was originally teased in 2002. Obviously a different game, but they did sow the seeds for a starcraft IP shooter long before Destiny.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus -2 points 14 hours ago

To be totally completely fair that game was canceled and is over 20 years old. Whatever seeds it planted are scarce by now at best.

[-] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 3 points 12 hours ago

Doesn't matter, you said original ideas, not completed games.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 10 hours ago

Lol okay. There is nothing in this current project from 20+ years ago of a game that got canceled. I doubt they even have any preliminary builds around anymore to pull from. This is something being built from the ground up.

[-] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Obviously. Your statement was that StarCraft had never had any original ideas in the IP; I was just pointing out that the idea of a StarCraft IP shooter pre-dates Destiny (and FarCry). I'm not sure why we're still discussing this.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 10 hours ago

Well I assumed it had some relevance, but it really doesnt. It doesnt really prove that StarCraft has original ideas just because they had a canceled game that was before Destiny. Looking at the time period that one was probably because Halo did so well. So it was probably going to be like Halo.

[-] VivianRixia@piefed.social 9 points 14 hours ago

When they said open world shooter, I was thinking more Far Cry than Destiny, but of course this being Blizzard they will pick the option that tries to monetize it the most.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 8 points 14 hours ago

I only thought Destiny because StarCraft is just a hodgepodge of SciFi shit from other IPs. So I thought of the biggest name "open world" SciFi shooter that recently existed and I would say Destiny is it unfortunately.

[-] VivianRixia@piefed.social 4 points 14 hours ago

Zerglings dropping all kinds of leveled loot is just going to ruin the tone that trailer was going for.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 7 points 14 hours ago

They won't do that. But they'll have the season passes, in-game micro transactions for skins, probably episodic bullshit too. Thats my guess.

[-] Poopfeast420@lemmy.zip 2 points 13 hours ago

The dude who was on stage during the announcement, Dan Hay, was apparently a producer on all the FarCry games since 3, so that tracks, but as you said, how can they extract a billion dollars from that.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 2 points 15 hours ago

Is it live service? I've only heard open world. More Just Cause than Destiny.

[-] Goodeye8@piefed.social 1 points 14 hours ago

Far cry maybe would've been a better example than just cause, but that's the issue with classifying it as "open world shooter". It could be Far Cry, it could be Destiny, it could be anything between. It could even be Just Cause because we don't even know if it's first or third person.

The whole announcement is a nothing burger.

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 14 hours ago

Is it 3rd person? I assumed 1st.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 3 points 14 hours ago

I'm comparing basic single player open world to live service. Not POV

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 3 points 14 hours ago

Destiny 2 was live service, Destiny was arguably not entirely when it released but was getting ready to go there by the end.
