That's hilarious, but it's definitely a ghost kitchen

I don’t have a problem with ghost kitchens. The best Indian takeaway (by far) near me doesn’t have a restaurant, they’re delivery (or collection) only. The curries are superb, and the prices are decent, presumably because they don’t have the overheads of a restaurant, waiters, bar staff, tables, chairs, linens, crockery, cutlery.

And I’d rather ghost kitchens existed than find myself sitting in a real restaurant, waiting for my food, while a constant stream of helmet-wearing moped riders come in and get priority.

Unironically my husband would love working at one. Food service is his preferred trade, but as an introvert if you took out the service part, he'd thrive.

I might be misunderstanding what a ghost kitchen is. Kitchens without a storefront are sometimes good but the "restaurants" that are just brands licensed to establishments, like this one, are almost always the lowest of peddled trash. That said, I'm hoping to order it at some point and make a post on it here.

I've got no problem with those kinds of ghost kitchens, and some of my favorite places to get food from are take-out only too. This looks like one of the Virtual Dining Concepts kitchens where they have like 30 "restaurants" taking up space on delivery apps all having the exact same menu so you're more likely to order from them than a local place

[-] hansolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

But aren't they also a local place if they're close enough to deliver to you?

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

Is there a difference between a ghost kitchen and a cloud kitchen?

[-] kate@lemmy.uhhoh.com 6 points 1 day ago

cloud kitchen is a brand that provides ghost kitchen services

[-] Console_Modder@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

If there are multiple "restaurants" operating out of the same location or address, those are ghost kitchens. I've never heard the term cloud kitchen before

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, so they're the same. Heard the term from my Indian coworkers, apparently they're very big in india

[-] kate@lemmy.uhhoh.com 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

OPs place is a ghost kitchen and i’ve seen their branches on my apps too, but here’s a real one

[-] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah i didn't know how to explain that as succinctly as you did lol.

What's wrong with a ghost kitchen?

[-] Obituarykidney@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

A lot of the ghost kitchens I've encountered are three or four different "restaurants" with one guy working. The food is 90% deep fried frozen stuff, and the stuff they do cook tastes bad or is really average quality at best in my experience. If they get enough bad ratings they close that one and start a new one with an identical menu but a new name and uber doesn't care.

Some of them are even real restaurants that had bad ratings so they run a shop with a different menu out of their kitchen. An Indian place near me has 2.4 stars which is the lowest I had ever seen - until they started a pizza shop out of the same kitchen and got down to 1.9.

Maybe some are good, but I've never encountered a good one in my city. There's no accountability, and it leads to lower standards.

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

1.9? Are they playing for being The Room of restaurants, wow.

[-] Console_Modder@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

I really hate how deceptive they are. There's a company called Virtual Dining Concepts that has like one location in an area, but they sign up as 30 or more different "restaurants" on delivery apps. All having the same menu and their items all have the same ingredients, and there are so many listings to trick you into ordering their food thinking you are trying a new local place called "Slutty Buns" or whatever

[-] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

It is. Most ghost kitchens are shit and steal business from real, local restaurants. I haven't tried this one yet (it's prepared by a bar near me) but goddamn if it doesn't appeal to my nature.

[-] TomMasz@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Serious "fellow kids" energy.

I've been to a Burger Slut - every burger was just drenched in sauce. Some mixes of a fewOH MY GOD I just got it. Mother fuck bucket.

Some mixes of a fewOH MY GOD I just got it. Mother fuck bucket.

I don't get it. explain?

[-] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

I thought the "slut" part was just the burgers were all messy. Now I think it's some bukkake type of reference.

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Now I think it’s some bukkake type of reference.

Bukkake udon, (lit. 'poured broth udon'): cold udon served with hot dashi broth poured over it

🤔

Hold your innocence dear, while you still can

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

...

For my innocence, I was going to try to shoehorn in "gokkun" somehow.

[-] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

They opened in Beirut too for a while. I don’t know what marketing genius thought that would work here. I remember the place being empty all the time because it was very expensive (and also had the word slut on the sign which I don’t think most people found particularly appetizing.)

[-] dektep@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

we have Egg Slut in London now too. Not very good and kinda overpriced

[-] Clear@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Why are you posting corporate advertising on lemmy

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

The Brunette is in the picture for the Slutty Meal but the description says it's a Smash Me Daddy.

[-] bcgm3@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Copy errors like that demonstrate a real lack of professionalism, and I'd expected better coming from the originators of the Smash Me Daddy Double Cheeseburger. Their food is supposed to be slutty, not stupid!

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago
[-] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And then there's LOTTERIA in Korea. Redneck bikers munching sliders... Cows in buns and boys... Honestly I have no idea how you're really supposed to read what's the stuff at the counter but it's in English and well doesn't exactly put off the message they intended.

And of course a coffee chain called "A Twosome Place" heh I mean at this point I get something was lost in translation, I'm sure they meant a place for two or a place for couples. This wasn't the first thought I had when it was next to the love hotel I was staying (it's cheaper than a regular hotel, but the tv had a call option or pink or blue lol).

[-] Anchorxiety@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Smash me daddy double cheeseburger is pretty funny. Sounds like the kind of place that would be hilarious to go to for the first time, but after that it would be a bit cringe lol

[-] Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

There's nothing to go to, it's a ghost kitchen.

A fake restaurant, probably owned by some other chain and likely serving identical food, that exclusively does doordash (or whatever the UK equivalent is) orders and performs various stunts like this naming scheme to bait in first-timers with something quirky.

Once business for this joke dries up they'll likely just close up and make another one since the "restaurant" is almost entirely virtual.

[-] Anchorxiety@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago

Well that's news to me, never heard of ghost kitchens before!
