We are close to the 1970s gas crisis days. People lining up for blocks and a flag system to tell you if they even have gas to sell. Is any of this necessary? Of course not.
What we didn't have in the 1970s were viable alternatives to vehicles with combustion engine. Ok, the US is currently totally missing the transition but the rest of the world isn't.
Detroit got caught with 8mpg tanks, Japan came in with small efficient hatchbacks.
Amsterdam put its transformation into another Detroit, just below sea level, to a sudden halt and reversed course 180° to the bike centric place it is today. Interestingly though Japan is lagging behind dramatically with EVs as well. They are stuck in early hybrid age, ie petrol light.
IIRC Japan was betting on hydrogen fuel cells when the move away from ICE started. That could explain why their EVs are behind the curve.
Maybe, I think it is more about them having really put their eggs into the back then really innovative weak hybrid segment. BMW after all was also very much into hydrogen, and kept that ambition longer than many alive. Yet BMW has stayed pretty innovative and strong on EV R&D as well. I mean they have not expanded via that route but at least they kept their boat floating and I think the Neue Klasse is really exciting stuff.
I honestly don't know much about the domestic Japanese car market but it appears to me that there is also very little meaningful regulatory push for EVs, also via subsidies. Of all the regions with a strong traditional car industry it is surprisingly Europe where car manufacturers are the furthest in the transition to EVs. In the US, Tesla aside, which was founded as purely electric car company, the big players are almost regressing back or at least stagnating.

I've had all 3 (ICE, Hybrid, EV) and by far the EV is the clear winner.
Even better would be reliable and frequent public transit running on its own infrastructure.

You don't even need any special EV for that. Even one of the new Renault Twingos for 20k EUR would do. If you want to pay less, get one of the 2nd hand EVs, as long as they are not too old, they'll do it too.

I saw someone watching tiktok while driving yesterday. People regularly don't see me, and I'm in a bright fuckin yellow 5000lb tank. Only way I'm riding a motorcycle is if everyone else has to ride one too.

Skill issue. I've seen washing machine+dryer+refrigerator on the back of a 125cc quite a few times, and I'm comfortable riding at highway speeds with 2 checked-bag size suitcases in my side racks and a backpack and carry-on suitcase behind me.

4 people on 1 bike uses less fuel than 4 people in a hybrid, its extremely common here in SEA.
But if most of your trips involve transporting 2 or more passengers, then bikes aren't so attractive.

My Kia Rio gets 43 mpg on average, and I'm feeling the pain on gas prices. Definitely gonna want to find a motorcycle closer to 150 than 50.

Yet they are building a FUCKTON of gas stations in my town. I seriously think theres 1 every single block, sometimes 2. And building more more more more. Every single new fucKing building is a gas station. WHY. Destroying wetlands and deforesting and taking fields from farmers, for gas stations we won't be able to use in 10 years. I want to scream but I don't know who at.
Oh and we have record storms and flooding every year now. And drought. WONDER WHY.

Friend, I don't think you understand just how much we hate the metric system. We'd stop driving before we measured fuel in liters.
It’s funny, because the U.S. uses the metric system for a lot of things. (Like soda or street drugs!)
But.. yeah. For fuel, they’d probably start charging per quart before they tried charging per liter.

If Newsweek isn't prepared to state they've independently confirmed some gas stations are out of diesel, they probably shouldn't print this article at all. What a strange quote

Individual stations can temporarily run short for a number of reasons, including high local demand or delays in fuel deliveries. GasBuddy's nationwide data indicates that, at least for now, the incidents being shared online remain isolated. For now, there is an increasingly tight and expensive diesel market, but not a nationwide wave of gas stations running out of fuel.
