Billionaires. They fund right-wring advocates, because tearing down establishment concepts like "rule of law", "industrial standards", "equality", and so forth is very useful to the wealthy.
I think it was the palantir guy I saw a video recently of some like industry convention from 10-15 years ago where he was saying "we can't win at the polls. That's why I like technology, because if we can control Technology, we can control everything" (or something like that, I don't remember verbatim). So yea, the Billionaires have always loved the far-right ideals. Once they have all the money, it's the only way they can get more power, and therefore feel more important. "Big Tech" is in a position to control so much of the information flow directly into people's brains that they can control the unwashed masses to go to the poll and vote against their own interests.
Social media promoting far right content
People have drastically less free time than 30+ years ago. That free time was crucial for forming community, emotional fulfillment, and pursuing personal goals. Deprived of these things leaves people vulnerable to manipulation and mutually exclusive thinking.
Conservatism is a political movement masquerading as philosophical/principled. It appeals to peoples good intentions, validates their preconceptions, defines their identity in negative terms, and binds their self worth to their status within their group.
Anf a lot of the free time they now have isn't spent con forming these communities, but on social media instead where they get a steady diet of right wing bullshit
Big money interfering. Social media was just the latest iteration, billionaires have been buying news outlets since we had news outlets.
Life is getting shit for everyone, but it's a lot simpler and more accessible to blame a handful of brown people for everything. When a man in a tie says the same shit you've been saying down the pub, it's too easy for people to fall into lockstep with them.
We lost bad versus good because of moral ambiguity. Now all we have is left and right. My experience with left and right is that they are both parts of the same bigger body that controls their movements.
Fear.
When people are afraid, they are less likely to help others, and want to protect their family and posessions.
Honestly, i genuinely believe that social media algorithms are being manipulated by billionaires to push an agenda that saves them from tax or accountability.I am centre left and try to mould fb and insta feeds by specifically flagging content i dislike or dont agree with and it keeps coming back. Some of the insane 'stop the boats' shit i see here in the uk from creators and bots i have never heard of or interacted with in anyway is very, very suspicious.
The Left is gaining also. The center is losing because they tied their party to unpopular war and sanctions that have destroyed their economy and climate goals.
The Left is refusing to arm Ukraine and is offering Mamdani-like reforms in Berlin.
Give people what they want and you win, and it's certainly NOT war.
