He learned to communicate with birds and discovered their conversation was fantastically boring. It was all to do with windspeed, wingspans, power-to-weight ratios and a fair bit about berries. Unfortunately, he discovered, once you have learnt birdspeak you quickly come to realize that the air is full of it the whole time, just inane bird chatter. There is no getting away from it.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

funny thing is that birds actually do have proper language with grammar and you can learn to intuitively understand it.
But what the birds are actually saying is just stuff like "THERE'S A SNAKE, THERE'S A SNAKE" or "FOOD HERE, COME EAT"

also about cats in the neighborhood, the weather, the climate, breeding, soo much breeding omg

bird chipper is mostly about being horny and singing about it ... all day, very loudly

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

that's not very different from living near people who play loud music

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah isn't that most music?

[-] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 36 points 1 week ago

I think this way about wall decorations that are just vaguely relevant words like "EAT" in people's kitchens or "LIVE LAUGH LOVE" or "HOME SWEET HOME." Might be the autism talking but looking at them feels like a message being forcibly injected into my skull and I find them very annoying. Advertisements are even worse and are genuinely infuriating.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

makes me want to get "live laugh love"-style signs to label things around me.

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

English/American ads are always weird to witness. "Buy x now!" "Ask your doctor about x!" "Order now!" in a very direct commanding way. I find the European ads (that I actually notice) to be much more subtle. The maximum I can think of is "If you order now" formulations.

I wonder if there are laws pertaining to this or if it's a language barrier thing, e. g. because the polite form is too awkward in German.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

i think it's mostly a cultural thing, european ads can be plenty exhausting in other specific ways.
(my pet peeve is intentionally poor acting)

I read this. Didn't understand a lick of it. Not any different than some english-language posts.

There's no escape.

I like to think there's still many languages in which I'm completely illiterate. I'm in a prison but my cell has a window with a nice view.

I was playing overwatch the other day and a random person on my team was yelling at me over and over with a Spanish accent. Really distracting. Since I couldn't mute him in the middle of a fight, all I did was say 'no habla' over mic, and he switched to yelling at twice the speed in Spanish (which I don't speak) and it immediately got easier to focus lol

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I used to work in a spanish company in a tiny office with 4 people, and I found it so easy to tune them out when they were speaking with each other in spanish. Then I worked for a british company, and my concentration just ~~snowballed~~ tanked

[-] MaskedNybbles@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

"Tanked" might be a better word in this case. "Snowballed" refers to the forming of and accumulation of snow into a ball. Example: If you are having trouble concentrating, you can start small and try to get your concentration to build and "snowball" from there, at which point it will become significantly easier to build on it. If successful, your concentration can be said to have "snowballed."

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

oh nice correction, thanks. I was envisioning a snowball cascading down a mountain, dropping in height potential and aggregating in troublesome mass. I'll change it to tanked though, that does fit better

Maybe it's just me, but I get unreasonable angry when I have to read "u" and "ur." I can't really explain why, but I'd love it if people could write "you" and "your"/"you're", is it asking too much for people to add the extra "y" and "o" (or whatever)?

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

i always just read it as the city of Ur

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

nooo people are shy and don't dare to present their full "you" ... they only show a part of themselves

[-] D_C@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I'm with you.

Whilst I don't agree with it I do understand why people might want to shorten longer words (eg; whatever to w/eva. Or to be honest as tbh). It saves a tiny bit of time and space.
But when I see u and ur I just think, "this muppet doesn't know the difference between your/you're/yaw/yore and therefore just dumbs it down to this shit to cover it up!"

Also I used to know a person who would spell anyways as newaizz (sometimes there would be S's, not zeds).
FFS.
Why? I've no fucking idea. It's the exact same amount of letters, just spelt in a more stupid way!!
That one word being spelt blatantly incorrectly made me seriously judge him and his ideas for years.
Which is on me, really. It's just that I couldn't get over it.

[-] LwL@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

It's interesting to me that I get super annoyed at people confusing your and you're but if I write "ur" I use it for both anyway (and don't find it weird to read).

Life is hard. If you wanna relax with your social media chats and just do what's easy I ain't mad about it. I like seeing how people communicate when they don't have to follow every piddley rule. ppl r v creativ with language when they're allowed to be.

[-] pedz@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago

And let's not even mention the oppression of culture. We never got to choose our native language.

[-] lauha@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I don't get to choose if I understand a word or not. I simply do. What a shitshot

[-] Aneb@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Lol I want to introduce you to customers. Can they read? Probably, but 100% don't read or look at signage.

[-] pedz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Now that you mention it, I have been doing tech support for multiple years and yeah, sometimes I just have to read them the message on the screen.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I do software development but at my work, our logs are so verbose (so many debug messages that should have been removed before submission but weren't on a process that takes hours to complete, I've seen logs in the hundreds of megabytes for a single test) that I pretty much had to relearn how to find and read error messages. There were a few times I debugged "mystery behaviour" and once I had figured it out, suddenly noticed that there was an error message or warning about the exact thing I spent a while debugging. There was so much text that I just stopped really seeing it as text and saw it more as noise.

ironically your post qualifies :^)

Automobile drivers are the same way.

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

This continues even when you learn different scripts. I know the Katakana on an English product is probably going to sound like an English word spoken in a Japanese accent, but I still feel compelled to sound out "aisu kuriimu" (or whatever the written word may be) whenever I see it.

It's not as automatic as reading in English is, but the compulsion to focus on the written words still exists.

Just wait till you hear about theory of mind- you just FEEL SHIT because other people talk about their bullshit (unless you're autistic)

[-] Dadifer@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Go somewhere you can't read the language.

[-] randy@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

As the Stroop effect shows, automatic reading can even stop you from doing the thing you're trying to do (say the colour of the letters, in this case), and you have no way to turn it off! It was even proposed as a way to find Soviet spies by proving if someone could read Russian. The prison of literacy could have put you into a literal prison!

[-] Quexotic@infosec.pub 3 points 1 week ago

Don't worry, the current regime will free you.

[-] Emma_Gold_Man@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

For me, it's just as impossible to tune out spoken words. I'm going to have to go with Laurie Anderson on this one. Language, it's a Virus

  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
