Got an idea for next month's banner?

Photo Friday didn't last long (although I may have warned you that I'm terrible at sticking with things) but it's a new month and a new weekend so let's try a weekend challenge instead.

Snapshot Saturday is more about taking candid shots of everyday things, rather than hunting out the perfect shot for a particular prompt. So feel free to share a photo of something from your weekend - before and after shots of gardening progress, the shiny finish on your freshly cleaned vehicle (haha) or a good sunset.

Rules: No NSFW, no shots you didn't take yourself.

Had a little bit of rain last weekend. That's our tourist rail under the water there...

[–] Dave 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wow does that happen often?

And is the rail just an old railway line or do you use it for something?

[–] Axisential 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Over the rails maybe once every 2-3 years. There's a dual 1.2m diameter culvert there on the left (where that white water is) for what is usually a tiny stream. But sometimes they just can't cope.

Yes, it's a functional narrow gauge rail that we use to carry passengers to/from the caves and also just as a standalone tourist railway.

That's really cool, I bet it makes for an awesome experience. I'm keen to come try one day, as soon as I work out what else there is to do in Westport 😀

[–] Axisential 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Haha, there's some fantastic mountain biking, lots of amazing walks (day and multi-day), some good self-drive history tours (old coal and gold mines etc), horse treks, white water rafting, surf schools and more.

How does someone get from Wellington to Westport without an 8 hour drive? 🫤

[–] Axisential 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

3h on the ferry then 4h on the road ;) (technically only a 4h drive!) Or fly with SoundsAir

[–] Dave 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Ah, my quick google mapping must have included the ferry. 4h isn't quite as bad. A day or two in Nelson on the way could work too (we know someone there).

The next issue is that after the Christmas break I'll have about 1 day of annual leave left. Can you solve that problem? 😆

[–] Axisential 2 points 11 months ago

Haha, sadly, no.

[–] flambonkscious@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

That does look like a good time!

[–] sortofblue 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Was it cold? Somehow your photo looks incredibly wet but not freezing.

[–] Axisential 3 points 11 months ago

No, not cold. Just bone drenching wet!

Last night was my work do. I don't normally drink but had a few cocktails. This is a midori sour, which came in a glass so big it dwarfed the pints next to it.

[–] Axisential 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don't drink either but damn that looks good!

[–] sortofblue 1 points 11 months ago

It was much easier to drink than I expected and if it hadn't been so huge I probably would have putting them away.

Here's a shot of a kererū I saw in a tree a couple of months back. The photo isn't the best but I thought it was a neat encounter.

The photo isn’t the best but

But that's the whole point of a snapshot challenge - sharing the moment without worrying about technical bits and pieces. I like this, it looks like they're deliberately posing for you.

Nice! What kind of sauce?

I'm also having trouble with the scale. Is it a giant wooden spoon or a tiny pot?

[–] liv 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Tee hee, now I can't unsee it as a tiny sauce in that picture, but the wooden spoon is a little bigger than the width of my hand. It's a pasta sauce with celery in it.

Cooking is kind of a big accomplishment for me these days, but it's nice to get back to a sense of eating like "me". I don't think most of us notice in everyday life but food is part of identity.

I love this, I'd seriously consider buying this as a print.

And one from around Lake Tekapo

[–] Dave 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This one feels ominous to me for some reason. Like a mountain in Mordor or something!

[–] shartedchocolate@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Lil spooky, it was in Queenstown

[–] luthis 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Is there some way to mesh this with pixelfed?

[–] liv 4 points 11 months ago

My pictures for here are on pixelfed but I just use ! To embed them.

Pohutukawa I posted the other day ended up getting shared by a few strangers on mastodon, I was pretty chuffed.

[–] Dave 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

You can hotlink pixelfed images, but I don't think there's any fancy embedding. Some apps may do it but I'm not sure which if any.

Feel free to link to photos on pixelfed, though, I don't see any harm in that.

We went to the Auckland botanic gardens for a few hours on Saturday. There was an ultra marathon going in the forest trail in the back. Lots of nice flowers out.

pohutukawa flowers

[–] sortofblue 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Beautiful! Do they have much of a smell? I've never seen real pohutukawa, just the local bottlebrush.

[–] catsdoingcatstuff 2 points 11 months ago

Not that I could smell. I love the bottle brushes, too! That's another really cool tree. They are also blooming everywhere right now.
