From the same directors of OpenAI closing their models, Privacy.com now requires ID checks.

IDK if it was Persona, but when I tried to sign up last year, they demanded I send a copy o fmy photo ID to a 3rd party identity broker. I refused, and did not sign up. Given the recent huge breaches of photo ID databases, I feel kinda vindicated about that.

I started to sign up a couple years ago, maybe, and they wanted a massive amount of personal info. It never made sense to me. If I was willing to give all that out to some random company online, I wouldn't need a privacy service.

I suppose they are going to require some KYC info. They have legal reqs they have to meet. So, I get that they must know my real identity. Still, they could do it without a photo ID given to a 3rd party identiy broker. There are other ways, which do not depend on an ID copy which every identity thief in the world wants.

Why are they subject to KYC requirements? Are they a finance company?

FUCK indeed. Now I guess I need to find an alternative. Fuck all this id verification bullshit.

[-] Scaramanga@thelemmy.club -1 points 1 week ago

Get a second ID for all this nonsense, and sleep easy at night.

[-] ItsNotImportant24@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 week ago

A second ID from where may I ask?

Signal Mr_Blue.72 100% genuine and reliable.

New thing called AI. People's names and adresses are public record in many places if they own their home. Have at it.

using stolen/leaked ids as your own is a felony on many (most? all?) places. don't know what ai has to do with it.

but just fyi so you don't get arrested or anything.

Anyone have recommended alternatives?

[-] latetolemmy@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah. Surrender your internet plan and touch grass.

[-] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 3 points 1 week ago

It’s not a bad plan at all and I touch more grass with every new thing that enshittifies.

People have been discussing it for months. I haven't noticed it until now. Apparently you haven't either... So I think you won't be affected until you do something major.

I say close your account before they make you hand your Id over.

[-] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I logged in last night and didn't see anything about verification. Still, I'm going to start looking for alternatives.

[-] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

same, I wasn't personally affected... Yet

But I'm also not creating any more cards with them and I'm jumping ship if I see decent alternative.

[-] dmtalon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

My CC is EOL it's extension to access/create virtual CC's and I use that multiple times a week so I've been looking around and knew about privacy.com

And that's quite the timing regarding them. I can still create and use virtual cards but it's going to be a lot bigger pita which is why I was looking around.

Hope someone knows a good alternative!

I believe Revolut works still.

[-] dmtalon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

One thing I found is revolut is different than what I want I don't want a new bank or bank like app just virtual ccs. And if course you have this from yesterday

Lol that thumbnail summs up pretty well what I was thinking when I read the headline

[-] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

The sheet did kyc for me. I wonder if that will prevent them asking for an id

Link to article?

[-] rando@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

I'm using privacy.com haven't been asked any ID yet but then again bank account is attached to it so I assume it verifies through bank. What am I missing, what should I change? Or maybe how should I understand this change?
