gender is a game and they are winning

[-] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 week ago

It's a social construct and everyone who thinks they have one loses

[-] kijete@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago

Not everyone is agender, for many their gender gives them euphoria...

[-] UninterestingVoid@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago

Tbh I just don't like genders from how many problems and discrimination people create around the for no reason.

~~they are also lies from toilet companies to sell more toilets~~

I find the core concept of selecting a predefined "gender" from the vast spectrum of experience extremely limiting, emotional association with a particular pidgeonhole disregulating, and the constructs themselves clearly in service of an oppressive society rather than the individuals trying to navigate it. Big ups to the trans homies who subverted the gender binary enough to get us here. We're living in dystopia, if you aren't a little dysphoric you're part of the problem. Big-titty lumberjacks and barbies with balls are all welcome at my not at all creepy undisclosed location. Switching sides and defining smaller and smaller facets to identify with were at one point revolutionary acts, but imo the work's not done until parents have a hard time explaining to their kids what a gender was

fake e: the blurred lines and ironically recursive definitions in the meme we're conversing under are exactly the subversive deconstruction I'm into

the only valid genders are french, irish, etc

(/s obviously)

I think that will create a gender singularity and possibly collapse the universe.

[-] bizarroland@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

I get it, but seriously, why is it tomboy for girls and femboy for guys?

Shouldn't it be like, tomboy for girls and Janegirl for guys?

It's not that I care an awful lot, it's that the thought crossed my mind and I had to share it or I would explode.

[-] JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 week ago

Sallygirl is the original counterpart before it fell out of use in favor of a slur (s***y) because tomboy was ok but sallygirl was discouraged. Tomgirl is more like futch or girly tomboy. Femboy is a more recent coining that doesn't have a counterpart because we still have tomboy

[-] bizarroland@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Huh. Til. Thank you for sharing. I honestly have never heard of the phrase SallyGirl before.

[-] peacepath@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Wikipedia gives Janegirl rather than Sallygirl, but they may be wrong. Yet I haven't met any of this words in real life. I find both cuter than s***y which come with so much other meanings...

[-] JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

Janegirl was still coined later using Tomgirl as a reference point. It's also a bit regional but all referencing Fun with Dick and Jane.

[-] LarsIsCool@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I'm a bit of an outsider, so sorry if this is not appropriate. But I feel like "tomboy" is the wrong one to map to the opposite gender, as femboy is more descriptive: easier to understand Before knowing the word. So rather than suggesting to change femboy to sallygirl (or similar), would changing tomboy to "mascgirl" be more appropriate? Feel free to change my mind

[-] JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

We're not even talking about changing anything. Just let people use the labels they feel fit them. I'm sharing the history I experienced pre-internet.

Tomboy and Sallygirl were coined together first and I read them in a yellowed readers digest type magazine in the upstairs bathroom at my grandparents house while I was small.

How dare you say I piss on the poor.

tysm for sharing

[-] Dagnet@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I do believe tomgirl is a thing

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
