There are a lot of different kinds of production, so that older definition isn't really that relevant in the globalized world.
There isn't really any single definition of capitalism, I dont think even Marx defined it in a single sentence himself. But I personally think an important aspect of modern capitalism is capital owning far more than just the means of production, going to the point where capital determines social and political power. An economy where capital has dictatorial control over people's lives and even over entire governments.
By my definition, a private share company is capitalist, while a family business or a coop is not capitalist, even though they are all private businesses with economic protection from the government. The question is whether political power comes from your money, or from who you are as a person, and democracy.
Its also important to note that an economy can be dominated by capitalist activity, but can still have government protections keeping capitalist activity out of certain sectors, such as public healthcare or welfare.
There are lots of economies where they have free markets and capitalist enterprises, and even ultra-concentration of wealth, but dictatorial capital does not control every aspect of citizens' lives.
Glad I went to university in Australia where "really expensive" isn't a problem for domestic students.
For citizens, the government subsidizes it and pays 50-80% of the cost depending on the course (higher priority areas have better coverage). The remaining cost can be covered by an interest-free loan through the government (called HECS-HELP), and you only have to start paying off the loan once you earn more than AU$70k/year, which removes a lot of the stress. The repayments are automatically withheld by your employer as tax, the same way they withhold income tax.

In the US the government pays up to 100% but then you have to pay the government back. Lose lose I guess. I pay the government in taxes, then I barrow money that has to be paid back with interest. Fucking for profit government, WTF
In Germany you don't need a loan. Housing could be expensive if you study far from home but otherwise it's very cheap.
Yeah it's definitely not as good as countries where university/college is fully covered by the government, but it's also better than plenty of other countries too.
A lot of people in Australia just keep living with their parents while they go to university.

Since the 70s, the boomer generation borrowed and borrowed and borrowed from their children's future and sacrificed their unborn children and grandchildren to live their cheap low labour lifestyles. The pumped the markets with cheaper and cheaper fake dollars to fund wars, juice markets and build their dreams.
Now the bill is coming due and you are going to pay one way or another.
Blame Keynesianism, blame Nixon, blame Reagan and blame the selfish me-first generation for not thinking past the backs of their refrigerators or past the ends of their filthy tailpipes.
Actually, the financial class captured the political class to unlock more and more financialization methods. Meanwhile, business interests captured the courts to open the political class to more and more bribes.
What happened here in the states can happen anywhere. And if your own nation is being run with neoliberal policies, it's going to happen there too.
