I didn't know speaking a specific language gave you extra rights....

If I learn Norwegian can we get Norway to invade America? I need them Norwegian healthcare rights...

[-] inlandempire@jlai.lu 20 points 5 days ago

not the argument he's making, it's more like "russian speakers are discriminated against by the baltic states I'm antagonistic towards, here's my sources: 💩"

[-] MrNobody@quokk.au 13 points 5 days ago

“German speakers in the Sudetenland are being discriminated against!”

TBH yes, the situation with the Russian language in Latvia is horrible.

People who have been born there cannot receive a passport until passing the Latvian language exam.

Not that it is worth another war or military operation.

Edit:

Like other ex-soviet republics did not have such restrictions and it kinda turned out to be fine. In Kazakhstan and Armenia they still speak Russian, I claim that the Russian literacy is on the same level as Latvia.

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 14 points 5 days ago

That's not the case anymore. All children born to non-citizens since 2020 get Latvian nationality. Without needing to bomb anyone to shit.

As far as colonisers go, Russians in the Baltic got off easy.

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 4 points 5 days ago

Kudos to Latvian government for admitting the mistake (at least partially).

As far as colonisers go, Russians in the Baltic got off easy.

Ahaha, colonisers. Guess having Baltic states unified under Ostland would've played better

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 8 points 5 days ago

Yes, the two only alternatives, German occupation, and Russian occupation. Or maybe the lesser evil is still evil.

[-] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

Genuinely that was the only two options at the time.

Poor Stalin, he had no choice but to do a secret deal with the Nazis to split up eastern Europe, and then he had to follow up with as much of it has possible after the Germans backstabbed him /s

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago

What was the lesser evil of these two?

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 28 points 5 days ago

So, in other words, he's preparing for war in Europe.

Every word uttered by a conservative is deception or manipulation. Every. Word.

[-] generator@lemmy.zip 27 points 5 days ago

Remember wen he said russia not going to attack Ukraine

[-] JustKillinTime@lemmy.today 19 points 5 days ago

How solid are "rights" for Russian speakers in Russia?

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

As solid as 12th floor windows

[-] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago

Seems like a trustworthy guy.

[-] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Definitely doesn't deserve a bullet in the head. Not even a little.

I'd rather see him get captured, put on trial, and stuck in a little cell under constant observation for what's left of his miserable life. Don't get me wrong, I'll still celebrate if one of his armed guards decides to do something heroic, but I think he'd prefer it quick and relatively painless instead of withering away behind bars. Not up to me though.

"I wouldn't wish death upon anyone, but have read certain obituaries with great pleasure"

Edut: typo

[-] Havatra@lemmy.zip 16 points 5 days ago

There is a lot of prejudice and straight up discrimination towards Russian speakers from what I've heard and seen in Estonia. But after 2022, this became a lot more prominent. Do you know why, Mr. Putin? Because of you. Because of you and Kremlin's fuckery in Ukraine (not exclusive), Russians and even Russian speakers are looked at with disgust and prejudice.
Good job, Mr. President. /s

[-] boonhet@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

There were reasons for it before too, let's be honest. I mean some people are just racist, but the soviet occupation is still in people's memory and unfortunately many Russians act superior to everyone else. Among the older ones, it was not uncommon to say there's no point in learning Estonian as we'd eventually be part of Russia again anyway, at least in the past.

I'd say for the most part we have been fairly tolerant of these settlers installed by the soviet empire.

[-] lennee@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

he should have prepared for a war in europe before starting a war in europe

[-] wizzor@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 days ago

Well, war is such a strong word, but an operation of the military... A special one for a few ~~years~~ days...

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Not preparing, just laying the political groundwork

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 6 points 5 days ago

Because Lithuania is not Europe

[-] pine@piefed.world 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Putin deepthoat spotted.

edit: exonerated by sarcasm gang

[-] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 6 points 5 days ago

Hahaha, far from it. Just guessing the next justification to be thrown by Russia to back up these words

[-] pine@piefed.world 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah, they use the same tactics everytime it’s hilarious at this point.

[-] kingofras@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

People need to realise that ex soviet ≠ europe to Putin.

The moment he says he’s not attacking, the attack is prepared and already underway. Baltic states are next.

People forget this is the end of the world as we know it. Every empire will grab as much turf around them to buffer them against the hard times. China, Russia and USA. This is empire resource security at work.

[-] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah, that happened, at least in Estonia, after the fall of the soviet union.

To prevent discourse like this from being used as an excuse to invade Estonia.

There were families that suffered because of this unjustly. But it's why it fucking happened.

Source : Met a Russian person who had this happen to them.
