Less. A hamburger is a descendent of the Hamburg steak which is a ground beef patty. It's got nothing to do with ham.

[-] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 16 points 3 weeks ago

It's got nothing to do with ham.

Does that mean porcelain isn't for pork either?

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 weeks ago

Porc is the insurance branch of Pork, which isn’t allowed to do business claiming it performs porking services.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

But what does that have to do with Hamburg?

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

Funny enough, no one knows. It's quite possible it comes from Hamburg or maybe was popularized in America by immigrants from there, but no conclusive link is known.

[-] xylogx@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

That may be the origin but the term has its own meaning and usage today. You can have a veggie-burger or a turkey-burger or salmon-burger. Why not the same construction with ham? A Ham-burger?

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Because it's too close so it would be confusing. You order a veggie burger or a turkey burger and you know what you're getting. You order a hamburger and get ham, you're likely gonna be confused.

Good point, how about Ham-hamburger?

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works -5 points 3 weeks ago

Why do we use euphemism after the animal is killed? Just call it what it is, a pig-burger.

[-] Devial@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

It's not a euphism, it developed in the English language because the aristocracy, which could actually afford meat and ate it regularly, spoke french, therfore using french terms for the meat e.g. Porcine -> pork or Bœuf -> beef ) wheras the farmers who actually raised and dealt with the animals, but rarely if ever could actually afford to eat them, used anglo saxon to refer to them, hence this dichotomy in names for meat vs. animal in English.

It has nothing to do with being a euphism. It's also evident that the cheapest meat, and pretty much the only one that even peasants could somewhat regularly afford, chicken, did not undergo this split.

[-] Lexam@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago

Then you just have a ham sandwich.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago

Sam Handwich

[-] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

What if you ground the ham to make a patty?

[-] Spur4383@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Unless it’s in a bun, then it’s a piggler burger, or a hammed pigger, our a pigged burger, right? English can’t be confusing, but no one would misunderstand any of those.

[-] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Probably less. The 'ham' in hamburger doesn't refer to the type of meat. But rather, the 'hamburg' in hamburger refers to the indirect origin of the creation (via the Hamburg steak sandwich). Hamburg in Germany. So putting actual ham in a hamburger would a) make it not really a hamburger, and b) be pretty confusing to people.

Edit: corrected my previous explanation based on the feedback of others.

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Correct except hamburgers originated in America, only taking their name from the Hamburg steak, whose connection to the city of Hamburg is dubious at best.

[-] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Close. The creation was the Hamburg Steak, it was not originally a sandwich. A hamburger is a hamburg sandwich.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

the -er is an adjective ending in German

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago

Less of a hamburger, more of a ham burger.

[-] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago

No, that’s just a ham and cheese.

If you give spamburger everyday to people, does it make a spam spamburger ?

[-] TootSweet@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

I think I once ate a ham hamburger in a berg near Hamburg.

[-] zerofk@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

Was there a burg on the berg?

[-] Darkenfolk@sh.itjust.works 0 points 3 weeks ago

There was a berg on the burg. They had impressive engineering skills in the olden days.

[-] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 weeks ago

Well, there's no sand in a sandwich, Manwich isn't a Sweeny Todd product, but a veggiewich is full of veggies. Maybe if you grind the ham and mix a bit of egg and breadcrumb, you could make a hamhambuger, which isn't more or less, just different.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The no sand in sandwich is only because the FDA actually had clout at one point….

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

It's a Newfie-burger.

[-] Shalien@piefed.projetretro.io 1 points 3 weeks ago

Since the name of the recipe if from the town of Hamburg, I guess it makes it a hamburger with ham

[-] Jaberw0cky@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Just be British and call them beefburgers because that is what they are? Except when visiting McDonald's then they are hamburgers..
