The easiest segment of the population to manipulate is racist and so politicians and the media weaponize it to get what they want.

The scary thing is I think Americans are less racist than Europeans and Asians, Americans are just presented with more opportunities to be racist.

Not to say it’s not 100% true that America has a lot of racism, but also realize comment sections are flooded with bots and paid shills making it look way worse.

My ex-wife's grandparents lived just outside Chicago. Her grandfather used to hang out at the local mall, because he wanted to practice his Spanish by talking to random Latino families that passed by. He was so casually racist, that he would occasionally have someone threaten to kick the shit of him over something he said...and he had absolutley no idea why they were even mad at him. And I'm not kidding, he was probably the sweetest old man you're ever going to meet...would give anyone the shirt off his back, and genuinely didn't mean any of it in a negative way. He was just so saturated in white privilege, that had no idea that most of the things he said were completely inappropriate.

As a Canadian, I always marveled at the idea that he was "one of the nice ones". That if you put him on one end of the racist spectrum, there was an entire range of people out there, that were progressively worse than him. And in US culture...this was just "normal" behavior.

I mean — immigrants and people of color, especially balck women, have been shouting at us for generations that we are a racist country.

We started as a racist country, we inspired other countries to be racist (al la Jim Crow inspiring Hitler).

We’ve ALWAYS been this racist, it was just that for a little while people were a bit more quiet about it.

I just think white people are really good at pretending bad things aren’t happening all around them, just as long as it’s not to them.

Imagine your job security depends on tweeting about the mayor smiling at an event to inflame racist natonalists. The political leadership of the US spends more time on bullshit like this than governing, but the fact that it's effective is the real sad part.

These are rich people fomenting a race war to avoid the much needed class war. Don’t fall for it.

The right is trying to fabricate an Islamo-Bolshevik conspiracy just as they invented a Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy a century ago.

Not to simplify too much, but the "they're eating the cats, they're eating the dogs" guy won a national election.

Racism is the cornerstone of Republican power. its why they are so hostile to anything that threatens racism, like education, and empathy, and moral values.

As President Lyndon Johnson once said.. "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

Yeah. Thought we were kinda winning the war against homophobia, racism, and all that.

Before trump.

But then trump showed up, and he said he was going to drain the swamp. He accomplished that feat. Every horrible human being living in the slime at the bottom of the swamp took a big breath of air, rose up into the daylight, and make their presence loudly known.

I had no idea the seething mass of willful ignorance, hatred, selfishness, and racism existed as deeply as it did here. It was like people all took their masks off and said “Here I am, and I hate every good thing you stand for.”

Let's all take a moment to remember that a lot of racist online accounts were unmasked as bots from Russia and other foreign countries.

Not saying that bigotry doesn't exist IRL in the US (as an American myself I can confirm it absolutely does), but don't judge a country by what its "citizens" are saying online.

Absolutely.

But it's a bit more than that too, because it doesn't just have to be race. It's just differences, and race, religion, gender, regionality, politics and more all play a part in it.

It gets a little confusing for folks because most people (rightfully) aghast at the situation latch onto the issue most close to them as the primary one, but when dealing with bigots, it's usually more of a grab bag.

For example, did people not vote for Kamala because she was black, a woman, or a Democrat? From data it's likely most people's order of disgust went Democrat - > Black - > Woman, but that's definitely not all of them.

For Mamdani, for most people who hate him, it would appear to me that it's because he's Muslim. The fact he's brown too is just icing to them.

That is not good.

We still have sundown towns and cops still pull people over for DWB. Also, the Supreme Court ruled this year that ICE is allowed to uses their racism as justification to stop someone and detain them.

America isn't the way it is because of Trump.
Trump is the way he is because of America.

I felt this way seeing how they treated Obama during his tenure. There was so much bullshit mudslinging, and at one point I said to myself: oh, it's simple racism.

Funny, because my biggest complaint with him was that he didn't address some of the worst abuses of the Bush years.
