Fyi, blood can be used as a replacement for eggs in many recipes. I've even seen it used in savory macarons.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 23 points 4 days ago

Hello this is your FBI agent. Please stay where you are, we will be there shortly.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 28 points 4 days ago

Idk what's worse if I think about it. When you think what eggs really are, blood almost seems more normal.

An egg is basically a queef.

[-] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 4 days ago

What do you think a queef is?

They are not typically made with reindeer blood, as is incorrectly stated on Wikipedia. The alleged source for this claim even says so:

While most recipes use pig or cow blood, any sanguine supply will do. The Sami people of northern Norway use reindeer.

TIL there are still egregious errors on Wikipedia. I guess it could be a case of updated source?

Well, it's usually cow blood, but they are delicious. Just like blood sausage.

[-] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 4 days ago

In my culture we have a sausage made mostly with blood. Quite tasty.

[-] Rothe@piefed.social 19 points 4 days ago

I think you will be hard pressed to find a European country which doesn't have some sort of blood sausage/pudding.

We do as well in Norway. Exactly the same as the british black pudding/sausage.

If you think these blood recipes are nasty, empty all food you have and don't eat anything for 3-4 days. Then go to the store and get some blood food or ingredients and eat a blood dish. You'll understand then very quickly why these became a thing nearly everywhere around the world. Hunger is the ultimate spice.

[-] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

So if I think they're nasty, I'm wrong because I'm not starving enough? Not a great counterpoint. They're still nasty in that scenario, just a helpful nasty.

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Aaaaaand that's how you know someone who has never starved before. Truly starved. The stomach has it's own opinion when left empty long enough.

It's good though, that you never had. I've been through a lot, but the trauma of starvation is a permanent one. It's best you don't ever see the perspective of why people made food from blood.

[-] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

My point is that if you have to be starving to enjoy eating something, then its default descriptor is probably much closer to "nasty" than "delicious"

I absolutely concede the point that everything nutritious will taste good if you're starved, and I'm glad to have never needed to rely on nasty tasting food to stay alive. I'm very lucky, no need to be adversarial about it

Blood sausage isn't uncommon. We eat it in Belgium, France, Germany,... Delicious.

If you decide on rating animals, eat all of them. All the animals and all the parts of the animals.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Some folks eat an animals testicles also, humans are nasty. Get used to it.

If you're gonna eat animals, eat all the edible bits.

[-] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 13 points 4 days ago

We also have a few foods with blood in it in hungary. Most countries have them. Also fun bonus fact, because hungarian and finnish/estonian are related very distantly i understand their word for blood which is veri, for us its vér.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

I'm calling Whipped reindeer blood as the name of my upcoming metal xmas album. You are not allowed to steal it.

Blood has about the same amount of protein as the same weight in eggs so it makes sense.

[-] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 4 days ago

It's basically equivalent from a culinary standpoint. You can even make meringue with blood instead of egg whites.

[-] Lexam@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

I think you mean Egguivalent.

In Sweden it's a common lazy dinner to fry up a couple of slices of factory made Blodpudding made of pigs blood and rye. Traditions of how it is eaten is regional but I'm used to it with lingonberry jam and grated carrots. It's quite similar to British black pudding.
