I love black licorisse. This is a tragedy

[-] Akasazh@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

Coming from a country that has a very big licorice-candy based selection, there is a lot of room within the category too, from sweet to salty, from hard to soft licorice.

Some of them I like, some I don't.

same. it's an acquired taste that I grew up with cause my mom ate it. it's a great treat especially because no one will steal it from me lol

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 11 points 3 days ago

I love some black licorice. Could go either way for the ones in the post.

[-] TomMasz@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

Same here. I'm actually having some as I type this.

[-] Janx@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago

It's offensive... But I get it.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 39 points 3 days ago

Is the FDA announcing this, so I'm guessing the announcement is that somehow the licorice has been contaminated with uranium or something because they just keep escalating.

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago

This particular screenshot was from 2018, but nowadays you are totally right. Just waiting to see the next thing they announce has been recalled.

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 days ago

The licorice companies are waiting for RFK Jr to make a speech in the shade somewhere, so that a similar looking photo of contaminated licorice can be taken.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 28 points 3 days ago

not surprised, american liquorice has a tragic lack of ammonium chloride

Salmiak is life.

To be fair, there's probably plenty of lead in it.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

oh it's sweet liquorice? :/

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Well, yeah, we like to shoot at our licorice, as is tradition.

[-] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago

Moved to Sweden, tried salted licorice. Somehow even worse. Ammonium chloride is legitimately the worst flavor I've ever had in my mouth and I put everything in there

[-] MilitantAtheist@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

Or you're just weak. If my candy isn't trying to kill me, what's the point.

[-] detren@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

I tried one of the saltiest ones there while actively suffering from kidney failure so it was literally killing me.

It tasted amazing.

[-] RustyLog@fedinsfw.app 4 points 3 days ago

Worst flavor? Have you tried petrol or brake fluid?

[-] lime@feddit.nu 4 points 3 days ago

don't think we have those flavours of candy in stock but i'll check in the back

Not a shitpost, but don't eat too much black licorice all at once, it can cause heart problems. Too much of the glycyrrhizin produced naturally in the plant's root that's used to make black licorice causes your kidneys to flood potassium out into your blood and it'll mess up the electrical signals in your heart. You have to eat like two bags a day for two weeks though.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Most licorice candy is actually made from anise root, which has no glycyrrhizin.

[-] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Eh, I can't eat it anymore, anyway. Gives me a headache.

Liquorice allsorts were a fixture of my childhood. Haven't had them in decades.

Edit to add: I call the pelotons of road cyclists in their colourful sponsored jerseys 'The Liquorice Allsorts Crew'.

[-] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 2 points 2 days ago

The best part is that clump only counts as one piece.

I know this a shitpost, because yet another food item legitimately has shit in it, this is now a constant problem in America.

I can only presume it’s because the workers are treated extremely badly, remunerated poorly, and the corpos face no consequences for apparently disgusting factories, and there’s no regulations?

There’s no reason this should happen in a modern factory, there should be three hand wash stations before a worker even gets close to the food.

“American food tastes like shit”

[-] droans@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Nah, it's just that some people don't like the flavor of anise.

[-] InputZero@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Okay but for real a little anise in a few recipes makes them taste right. I do not like the taste of black licorice but I keep a little star anise in the spice cupboard and a small piece makes ramen taste right.

[-] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah but you have to keep your anise clean and hygienic if you want people to eat it

[-] hanke@feddit.nu 11 points 3 days ago

I think rats and birds in the factories are the main source of shit contamination in american foods factories

[-] lastlybutfirstly@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

[-] NuanceDemon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 days ago

I want to stay in bed, eating black licorice.

Black licorice, despite comprising only 14% of the total licorice inventory, is responsible for over 50% of customer complaints.

[-] redlemace@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

responsible for over 50% of customer complaints.

and I quote a complaining customer : "And yet AGAIN there wasn't enough of it in the package"

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

More for me.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago

Too honest to be coming from this FDA

[-] rumba@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

Their actual quote is "recalled 100 tons for possible fecal contamination".

But it's not any more real than OP's image

[-] gatitaQwQ@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately, these days it feels like there’s poison in almost everything, as if they’re trying to kill us faster.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

Current fda is so fucked they probably like black licorice.

[-] expletivedeleted@lemmy.zip 26 points 3 days ago

I don't understand. I honestly love black licorice.

They wouldn't even make it if no one liked it. I also like dishes that use fennel or anise.

Always have and always will. Red licorice is the garbage one.

[-] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 days ago

I was in my teens, I think, the first time a friend said they liked black licorice. I really thought they were kidding, just blew my mind. I mean, if you like something, you like it, can't really argue with that. Still.
