All you have to do is show enough people their most-egregious aweful, or even evil, behavior, in ways that go viral, and make accountability bite them..

You'll be blacklisted by all their friends, though, as part of the price you pay for doing it..

such is the consequence of being born into already-established designer/decorator feudalism..

maintain appearances, or you'll be hurt, right?

🙏

What do you mean by... "blacklisted by all their friends"...?

[-] Randelung@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Remember the EU judge whose Visa and Mastercard accounts were frozen for investigating the US for something? That. Except you're probably not a high ranking official.

  • Nestlé: identify competitors and use their products. Eg Semper for baby food, or chocolate brands that support the cocoa farmers.
  • Amazon: buy directly from the stores instead of via amazon. Urge businesses to use e.g. hetzner instead of aws
  • Google: use other search engines, use YouTube with Adblock so they don't earn revenue on your streaming (consider supporting creators via other platforms)
  • Apple: buy competitor products
  • Disney: don't use Disney products
  • BlackRock: no clue lol

Man, I failed by buying an iPod in 2009... One and only time I ever bought an Apple thing. It's my fault they're still in business... Sorry everyone 😭😂

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

And maybe ebay, too. About half the stuff I've bought recently from ebay has arrived in an Amazom box.

[-] white_nrdy@programming.dev 1 points 7 hours ago

This happened to me recently, and it pissed me off

[-] derpgon@programming.dev 3 points 14 hours ago

Oh BlackRock is easy - the answer is arson

Connect with other people and no longer be a single individual fighting this fight. Reveal to others why you think those are evil companies, encourage them to boycott them, build a community of likeminded people, use this to influence politics or become politically active yourself.

Start an all-out nuclear conflict that renders the earth uninhabitable.

[-] weps@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

create a virus that kills most people

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 17 hours ago

That's the worst idea yet. As we've seen with covid, the streaming providers only get stronger under those circumstances.

[-] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 17 hours ago

COVID didn't kill most people, not even most people who got it.

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 17 hours ago

Right but I still don't think it'd drive those specific companies out of business. They're all damn good at profiting off of a worldwide catastrophe.

[-] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 17 hours ago

In the scenario of a virus that kills most people (i.e. more than 50% of the worldwide human population), I expect the entire world political and economic system to collapse, probably including most or all of these companies, though not only them.

[-] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 16 hours ago

Well then, agree to disagree?

Become president, collapse the dollar and the economy, turn all allies against you, start wars with no benefit or obvious endgame, get the rest of the world to start a program of "Buy not-America", wait a few years for new programs and businesses to start in foreign nations, have sanctions placed against you for being a bad neighbor, watch your local and international businesses collapse.

🤞

[-] MolochAlter@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Nestle is swiss, this won't do jack shit to them.

[-] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

You don't think an economic crisis where 30% of their shareholders and close to 50% of their income is sourced from won't harm them significantly?

Dude, can you also do Microsoft, Meta, Space X, Palantir and Clearview while you're at it? Not particularly in that order.

[-] tea_n_typewriters@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Microsoft seems to be doing well enough fucking themselves.

Edit: I just looked at their stock. The world makes no sense.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 18 points 1 day ago

The market can stay irrational longer than you can remain solvent

[-] ImWaitingForRetcons@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Become an expert assassin and kill the CEOs, major shareholders and executives, etc. into the stock collapses and the companies shut down.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

We're counting on you, OP. Be careful.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago

The most you can do as an individual is not buy from those companies

[-] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Certainly one can do more than just that

[-] iatenine@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

There's a very specific weakness in the death star but you'll need to master the force first

I recommend politics. Local politics can get their presence in your neighborhood to chill, set examples for other municipalities, and lead to broader office (if done well). Legal, community driven, and fairly direct. Does require talking to your neighbors, sometimes in public, which is a substantial downside.

Failing politics, I think your next best bet is probably attempting to do some hacking/espionage work. LLMs make this more scalable than it used to be, and they seem pretty happy to hack big companies. Costs a lot of money, will enrich other tech bros with high probability, definitely illegal, and it's pretty hard to do this hard enough to crush the business (tho if you can siphon enough money out???). But you won't have to talk to a neighbor or speak in public, so that's nice.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

They can’t. It’s not a one person job and there is no getting around that.

[-] Azzu@leminal.space 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There are a couple answers talking about becoming more rich/outcompeting them.

If you become the richest person ever or outcompete them, you'd likely be worse than they are now, and then you'd be the one people would want to shut down.

This isn't really a question about those specific companies, but what they represent. If you're taking the question seriously (joke answers are fine of course!), then the problem can't be solved by becoming like them or "beating them at their own game", because that's literally what caused the problem in the first place.

The problem can only be solved by living a non-greedy life, abandoning "career advancement" or similar, and instead doing "the right thing" at all times, even if it requires personal sacrifice. If you live your life that way, you'll likely inspire others to do the same. In the end, the answer of course is "an individual can not shut these companies down", but if everyone acted like I'm saying, then these companies would get shut down by no one working for them anymore.

In the end, you have to answer the question "if everyone acted like me, would the problem still be there?", and if the answer is no, then you're successful. That everyone does actually act like you is not really important.

Would be especially effective against Nestle. Advertise that you’re going to poison products from the company, do it successfully, then advertise you’ll do it again.
