The funny thing is that if you look at the war generation, the one before Boomers, they basically had quite a similar taste for gallows humour and absurdist humour.

It's almost like hard times make it so gallows humour and absurdist humour become popular as a coping mechanism

I'm a 38 year old millennial.. I've been joking about suicide and self harm for 20 years.. Before that I wasn't having fun when talking about that stuff.

The point is now it's just all funny.

You never ever really get over depression and anxiety.. You just learn how to live with it.

I work in a company of at least 2000.. At least 40% know me as a big fat loudmouth that they all enjoy talking to. There's another 25-45 people who hate me because I can't shut up.. Being quiet is when old mate anxiety comes back..

Or do not :)

Suicide is the retirement plan. Don't let your estate be bankrupted by the retirement ~~parasites~~ industry.

Nah. Young people just see an old and call them a boomer.

[-] applebusch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

No, y'all won't let us forget you. We just ignore you.

[-] burido@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Were we, forgotten? Gotta make somebody of me! gotta leave a mark on the screen! But if the word don't know who I am how can I? (Take another face and make it mine!) I'm the pinnacle, greatest from the beginning born in chaos I'm the ultimate form! What's wrong got something to say? These fist relentless I can't miss You just want to believe right now, leave right now. Stepping up to me got no shot Senses are screaming Without any weakness Boy think you better say good night!

Sorry that just reminded me of my favorite song.. I had to

Where's the gay lost generation guy with his hook hand?

[-] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 14 points 2 days ago

Seems like bottom right should be genx rather than millennials but I guess we had emos so maybe that tracks

[-] Senseless@feddit.org 25 points 2 days ago

Based on anecdotal evidence (aka the people I know including myself) millenials joking about suicide fits quite well.

[-] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 29 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

IIRC, Gen-X was the first generation in the US with a suicide epidemic.

EDIT: Nope. It's officially Gen-Z's title. Congrats?

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I think millennials in the military had it first. The military couldn't figure out why fighting pointless wars was causing more of their members to commit suicide.

[-] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago

In the eighties, there were a lot of news reports about the high and climbing rates of suicide in teens, whixh led to my original comment. After a little research, it turns out that Gen-X is having a suicide problem now.

So if both Gen-X and their kids (Gen-Z) are committing suicide now, is it really a generational thing, or is it just that today sucks really hard?

[-] rnduser314@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Gen-X here, can confirm. The World of Tomorrow is today, and it sucks hard. Every dystopian sci-fi of my youth is coming true. I am not sure I want to know what the future is going to look like.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Oh, it's definitely that everything sucks.

[-] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Gen Y had suicide jokes for a while now with similar looks from boomers. Meme feels more like passing the torch to Gen Z as they're starting to do it too.

Maybe both partners working 40h+ commute and caring for children and doing household (or not get children at all) is inhumane. With AI things will become worse. Human brain is not designed to never do any repetitive task again. It needs repitition. But these tasks must be fed to AI now.

[-] Quokka@quokk.au 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Maybe the loss of third spaces and the commodification of living has turned the joy of the human experience and connection into something unachievable by many.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 7 points 2 days ago

I dont need repetition i need more time and resources to be with the people I love and build community with those around me.

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 2 points 2 days ago

100 years ago, each family worked 40 hours of wage labour a week, plus childrearing and chores

Today, each family works 80 hours of wage labour a week, plus childrearing and chores

In order to restore the labour rights of 100 years ago, I propose a 20 hour work week!

[-] Viceversa@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah, no. It depends on the task.

[-] Zacryon@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

And on the person.

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

I wish AI could do repetitive tasks, but it actually can't repeat things identically very well.

[-] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Well, for very repetitive tasks we have computers/scripts/programs.

LLMs are fairly good at assisting the somewhat competent user to make said scripts/programs, and helping to monitor them. But they are not the best tool for every job, and certainly not the most efficient in resources.

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 5 points 2 days ago

I got to manually and individually rename 400 files using a complex series of rules the other day. It was glorious

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

I agree wholeheartedly -- inspiration and creativity are usually spawned out of boredom and inspiration. In years gone by, humans spent most of their time bored, and inventing ways out of their boredom. The boredom happened during menial tasks, and the inspiration happened during the leisure time.

By removing the ability of humans to be bored, and reducing their time to be independently inspired whilst bombarding them with never-ending content, that's likely going to have long lasting effects on how humans develop and think
