There are seven continents.

Eurasia, Africa, America, Antarctica, Australia, Greenland and Zealandia.

Change my mind.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

We're all in Greater Gobekli Tepe, technically. The Gobekli Tepe Metropolitan Area/suburbs.

[-] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 9 points 20 hours ago

Europe is not a continent. Change my mind.

[-] __dev@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Continents are made up anyway. Some call it Eurasia.

[-] emiellr@lemy.nl 3 points 17 hours ago

Yep, no notes

"Europe? More like Europartofmenow!"

[-] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 77 points 2 days ago

The best European invention was the Suez canal, preventing people from realising that Africa is also the same landmass.

I propose we dig a similar canal from the north of Russia to the Black sea to unambiguously become a continent. Some would argue Caspian sea is more appropriate, but come on: Connecting the Black sea to the White sea? That's poetic.

This plan would cost trillions, benefit no one and have devastating consequences for millions of people. I will not be answering questions.

[-] elephantium@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

In the same vein, does the Kiel canal mean the Denmark is an archipelago instead of a peninsula + islands?

And the Panama canal is when America became two continents? :D

In 1999, the warty comb jelly colonized the Caspian Sea via the UDWS. The establishment of this population led to a 60% reduction in the number of sprat, which in turn led to a reduction in the population of sturgeon and seals.

Beautiful ethereal alien ate all the babies :/

Oh so another ai company then

Europe and Asia are the same continental mass but Africa is not. Africa is moving independent to the Eurasian continent and is even slowly producing a new continent at the horn of Africa. So yes, it's true that Europe and Asia are the same continent but Africa is not. It is also slowly moving into Europe. That's why the Alps exist.

[-] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago

Behold, the 16 continents:

From Wikipedia.
You are of course free to define continent how you want, but I am free to prefer Afroeurasia over a North America that includes parts of Siberia and half of Japan.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 12 points 1 day ago

Bro actually believes in plate tectonics 💀

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

It’s still so wild to me that something so fundamental and basic was figured out only in the past 60-80 years.

India then should also count as a separate continent since it's on a separate plate. It's not clear cut.

[-] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

It is often called Indian subcontinent,

The name "Eurasia" exists.

[-] Johnmannesca@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

No, ur a sia

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

The continent of Africa is connected, count it in.

[-] elephantium@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

Asia is Northeast Africa, extended edition.

Europe is North Africa, extended edition.

It also leads me to count 4 continents: Africa (or Afrasia/Afro-Eurasia), America, Australia, Antarctica.

I'm confident that I could make a damn convincing argument that it wasn't earth before 4.6 billion years ago.

[-] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago

I fail to see why it should be asia centric.

Surely it makes more sense to call it Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe And A Bit North... :-)

[-] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 26 points 2 days ago

Asia was named such by the Europeans, meaning something like 'the land of the sunrise' and thus referencing its Eastern position relative to Europe.

Etymonline cites a possible Akkadian origin for 'europe' meaning 'to go down, set', which would mirror the origin for the word 'asia'.

In other words, Europe and Asia might literally mean 'the western and eastern bit,' making perfect sense.

There would be a lot of wars over who was northwest and who was west

It's all ~~Greek~~ Roman to me.

[-] elephantium@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

This makes me think of that old Doctor Who episode where they're in Pompeii, and anytime the Doctor or companion uses a Latin phrase, the locals get agitated and say things like "Hey! ME. NO. SPEAKIE. THE. CELTIC!"

Cute little quirk with the handwavey translation thing.

hehe suddenly Italy and Spain are "the nordics"

[-] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago

Europe is actually more a collection of large islands that have temporarily decided to exist as a unified land mass because Africa and Asia are squeezing it from both sides (geologically speaking)

[-] trxxruraxvr@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago

Geologically speaking India and surroundings are also not Asia but a separate continent running into Asia creating the Himalayas
