Being a doctor is one of the jobs expected to be least at risk from AI replacement. But a new program launched in Utah is raising questions over that assumption. A healthcare startup will begin offering AI examinations and prescriptions to patients without direct human oversight, making Utah the first state to replace a doctor with an AI.

The good news is that the program is currently very limited in its scope. It's just one year long and only for patients with mild-to-moderate acne.

The process works when a person signs up for Nolla Health's $4.99-per-month app and uses it to scan their face. After completing a medical history and personal information form, the AI analyzes their skin, identifies the acne problem, rates the skin's oiliness, and then generates a numerical acne severity score that ranges between clear skin and severe acne, reports Bloomberg.

People are going to die I guarantee it

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 92 points 4 days ago

I don't think they're going to die since it's only for acne. But to be fair, that headline is atrocious and meant to click bait everyone.

[-] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 66 points 4 days ago

But hospital execs are gonna go "see it worked for acne, let's try other stuff."

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

☝️ This.

[-] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I have my doubts it will work for acne. But, this is the plan.

I can absolutely imagine this ignoring a carcinoma that no human doctor would have.

[-] xtr0n@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago

There are acne medications that are extremely dangerous. IDK if this clanker would be allowed to prescribe accutane, but that’s something that absolutely requires careful monitoring.

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 days ago

Yeah Accutane requires regular blood tests to make sure it's not killing you. Probably not great to prescribe without a real doctor.

[-] monotremata@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

There's also that pesky black box warning about how it increases the risk of suicidal ideation.

AI medical errors aside, isn't this a way to get facial scans into the AI database, specifically those of the youths? Especially the most gullible youths. And connect them with their medical history and identity.

HIPAA means nothing to AI

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 31 points 4 days ago

Everything AI does is a scam. So yes.

Look past the hype of electronics mimicking intelligent processes for a moment, and look at what else is being done:

  • monitor all cameras (report on populace)
  • require all computing components on earth (price populace out of independent compute)
  • require facial scans for medical reasons (store and categorize population demographics)
  • require cloud storage for agent to have access to and buying your own hardware is impossible (report on populace, including enterprise)
  • provide answers to internet queries and summarize news and current events (manufacture consent of the populace)

This is a total information takeover happening in broad daylight. They want to get us to pay to give them everything about us at all times. Like WAY more than we already have been, which was already too far. This needs to be STOPPED.

This reminds me of the Futurama joke:

Mars was a "dreary, uninhabitable wasteland" much like Utah, according to the Professor. However unlike Utah, it was "eventually made livable"

[-] LiarAmongAll@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

There's also a map they show of the US, with Utah saying Human Farm in Alienese 😂

[-] dropdrip@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 days ago

It feels like they're speed-running data-collection. Just put a field in and prompt the user for... their name, date of birth, medical history, biometrics, financial accounts--everything! Just upload everything so that I may profit!

[-] ArkanianOffshoot@feddit.org 12 points 3 days ago

...after which your favorite healthcare insurance provider will use its own AI-powered systems to deny coverage for your AI-prescribed meds :D

yay!

Utah, where you can sell unregulated 'health supplements' but can't buy a beer.

[-] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Well if it’s all automated then surely it will be cheap or free without insurance. Right? Right Anakin??

We all know it will still cost just as much. Fuck these companies

Life As A Service

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I wonder if any of this would mean any of us hoi polloi will have cheaper healthcare?

LOL, who am I kidding? The private equity firms running our clinics will probably try to reduce staff, underpay them as much as they can get away with, enshittify the outcomes as much as possible, and still jack up the prices for everything.
