Unmatched someone: I was talking about how the movie Avatar is a blatant allegory for native/indigenous populations and the person got offended that I would "put real life events into a movie about blue people"

Been unmatched: the person had a series of 4 almost identical selfies but each one had different anime boys edited in as if they were hanging out (amazing bit. Perfect joke) and my opening line was "i hate when people have only group photos. It makes it so difficult to tell when one I matched with". I was called an idiot and unmatched within 5 minutes.

I'm so glad I got married before the dating apps became the norm.

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 46 points 2 days ago

I have no social media and that's a red flag apparently

[-] expletivedeleted@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 days ago

Shit, this girl worked at a police station and got upset, nearly canceled our meetup because I had no criminal record.

When we met up, she refused to go get food or drinks. Instead, she took me to a secluded park and let me know she was carrying two guns.

I said a shootout was a weird first date activity and I would have rather gone bowling. She took me back to the hotel, but offered to get me Taco Bell on the way back.

She then wouldn't respond the next day, which the entire point of the trip was to go to a museum I wanted to see.

It was my birthday trip and she just happened to be along the route. I went to the museum alone and had a blast.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

"She took me back to the hotel" could mean two wildly different outcomes. I can't tell if you mean she ended the date immediately or you two had sex in a hotel and then she ghosted you.

Though either way, her deciding on her own that she didn't want anything to do with you was a bullet dodge, considering she not only used police resources to try to look you up but even scolded you about it, making it clear she either didn't think there was any problem with it or didn't think she'd face any consequences.

[-] expletivedeleted@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

She tried to buy me Taco Bell and she tried to kiss me. She took me back my hotel room. I wanted nothing to do with that crazy shit.

I figured the museum would be saner the next day as her daughter was to join us. She didn't answer, I shrugged and went.

She texted me the day after. I just blocked her. So it goes.

[-] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 12 points 2 days ago

I have gotten hit with that one too!

Because I was in the Navy at the time. Not wanting to date someone in the military isn't a bad thing, I get that. But I talked about it in my profile and had several pictures of me on the ship in uniform. Then weird part was that when we met for our first date and it came up in conversation she acted like I had kept it secret. Really fucking weird.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I had someone, who I had gone on two dates with (maybe it was one, idk. It was a long time ago), apologize that she couldn't date me anymore because she just adopted a cat that had the same name as me. That was a weird one because she seemed very interested until that. Probably dodged a bullet. Lol.

[-] apprehensivecrab1@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

She told me that her favorite comedian was Jeff Dunham and that she didn’t like reading.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

I also hate it when people say the same thing twice in a row.

You dodged two bullets there. 1 was a person who doesn't understand metaphors or allegories, 2 was a person with no sense of sarcasm or humor.

[-] yesman@lemmy.world 117 points 2 days ago

A girl canceled a date once because I'm not on Facebook or anything else. (I asked her out in person).

She combed through socials as a kind of background check and interpreted my absence as suspicious. Modern problems.

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 68 points 2 days ago

What's interesting is that both perspectives are valid. Of course she could have asked why you don't have social media, and when you spout off about privacy and big tech then she would cancel for a different reason.

[-] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah this is legit a thing cheaters do apparently. I just don't want patients finding my favorite cafe in my likes ok 😭 honestly sometimes my husband pisses me tf off but at least I'm not rummaging in the mystery grab bag anymore.

[-] cinoreus@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Internet is a hostile enough place that not having a social media presence is a valid lifestyle. Like, I don't want to be assumed as a cheater just cause I'm trying to preserve my sanity😭.

I unmatched a woman IRL face-to-face because she told me (in one unbroken monologue) that she slept with a co-worker in Sydney while she was visiting a regional office and that she attends SLAA meetings and that was her first slip in 3 months and that she's also a psychic medium and she's building a website to list her mediumship services, and she is obsessed with marvel movies. Then she asked me to go get a coffee with her

No one part of this is too much of a red flag, but all of it together, and she knows I'm good with tech and can build a website with my eyes closed, I probably would have ended up doing a bunch of web work for free. Plus I really don't think that medium people are talking with the dead, at best it's a hallucination or a lie, at worst it's a trickster entity that should not be interacted with under any circumstance.

So I just peaced out and I feel like I made a good choice.

[-] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

Psychic medium is a huge red flag. They're the worst kind of grifter, preying on the bereaved and desperate.

In her introduction she made it a point to mention that she’s an INTP and wanted to know what type I was. I simply said that those types of personality tests aren’t really my thing. I got a reply back, something to the effect of “Well thanks for showing up front what a toxic and hateful human being you are!”

So yeah guys, sorry about being so toxic and hateful for not being into personality tests.

[-] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 19 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

lol that's so stupid.

And the Myers-Briggs isn't even a good one. Those two ladies just made it the fuck up during World War 2, based on some Carl Jung book. It has no predictive power.

https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-28315137

[-] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 9 points 2 days ago

While I agree those ladies were a bunch of loonies, I don't think the test is supposed to be predictive (this is how you will be), rather descriptive (this is how you are).

Although I've had this same argument with people over the function of dictionaries being descriptive (this is how words are used) rather than prescriptive (this is how you should use words).

[-] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 days ago

I don't think this is comparable to descriptivism and prescriptivism in linguistics.

The predictive power of a classification doesn't have anything to do chronological order of what you are now and how you will develop, but about if knowing one thing (the MBTI) allows to deduce another (age, socioeconomic status, interests, vocational suitability, whatever). In other words predictive power is about correlations and testable outcomes.

If a psychological test leads to a result that does not predict other statistical values about a person, it does not actually capture anything that person is, at least nothing that's verifiable or falsifiable.

And if it's not verifiable or falsifiable we might as well use zodiac signs.

[-] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago

Hmm, I see what you're putting down. I may have to revise my thoughts on the matter. Thanks.

Lol, I used to work for a big corporation which made these tests (16 personalities in specific) mandatory during job training. After I debunked that shite as bogus I got the afternoon off.

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago

I got "The Mediator" or something and my boss got mad at me for being an "arty farty hippie". Apparently the correct answer was to be "The Analyst" like my coworkers

[-] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 38 points 2 days ago

I worked for one of those companies that paid like 15k per employee to spend like half a day figuring out which of 5 types you are. Somehow I got all 5 and confused quite a few people.

got a match and first question was if I was an EU citizen, I am, but decided to reply "no" just for fun. Then she asked me if I was here legally and on the path of citizenship, I replied yes just to see where this was going.

"alright, contact me again when you're an EU citizen"

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Maybe they've run into too many people looking for citizenship via marriage.

[-] Vengefu1Tuna@lemmy.zip 48 points 2 days ago

It must be hard out there for people with a citizenship kink.

i have a couple of women on dating apps who repeatedly match me then accusing me of being someone else and threaten to report me. I block them.

also lots of them IRL and on dating apps refuse to interact with me further once they find out where I grew up or that my parents aren't educated. because that means i'm not from a 'good family'. I also find this totally insane... but I guess it's fairly normal for people to judge you based on your parents/hometown?

I will say the weirdest fight I ever got in in a relationship/dating was a Russian woman who lost it on me because I eat breakfast cereal. She went on this rant about how cereal/granola is for children and grown men can only eat toast, fruit, or eggs/sausage breakfast. She was so weird, but a every Russian woman I have dated has really backwards ideas about gender roles and they also disapproved of my lack of heavy drinking.

This post is making me so beyond grateful that I never had to do online dating, and never ever will, I’d rather die a lonely old spinster than do online dating.

[-] Knoxer@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Well it's not that bad xD of course this post is about the bad side of online dating

Why did you text her so much when she said that off the bat? Also texting someone at 3am?

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

It's pretty cringy and gross. And I'm a guy on Lemmy saying that

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

The great thing about these apps is how easy it is to unmatch. They could have gotten out of that any time they wanted. (This is all assuming it's real anyway. Although who'd make up that name?)

In another life I matched with this girl, picked her up, no joke the first thing she said to me in person after just meeting her was that she loved me. I just picked her up and saw her for the first time. I dropped her off right there. I didnt use it much after that so I never got to shine and have someone unmatch me.
