“I wish I went to that orgy”

I never thought I'd die having worked so hard

What about having worked hard at an orgy?

Aye, I could do that

[-] nanometer1625@thelemmy.club 7 points 16 hours ago
  1. I wish I'd never been born.
[-] BreadOven@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Agreed. Then none of this would be experienced by those who wish they didn't have to.

[-] womboflll@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago

I regret not being born rich, got everything else. Haha. /moneybuysmorethanhappiness /fuckcapitalism

[-] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 hours ago

Nah, it doesn't. The rich are not automatically happy. The rich, ignorant and stupid, maybe.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 7 hours ago

They're a deeply miserable people, on the whole. If they had anything that gave them real joy in life, they would not need to be torturing society and bleeding us dry to fill the hole in their souls

[-] Darkonion@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Ah. I'd assumed 'rich' just meant no pressing money related fears, eat the food they want, safe water, warm and clothed, can go to doctor / dentist, access to knowledge / art / entertainment / community, work at the work you want only as much as you want, etc., not those broken money-hoarder people.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 2 hours ago

That is true wealth. But in terms of class, it's like putting elephants and beetles in the same category when you're an ant. There are orders of magnitude at play that effectively put us in the same league as bigger bugs whether either of us like it or not.

When one of my coworkers was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, his first words were, "Damn, I wish I had drank more beer."

[-] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Maybe how you dies matters but I wasn’t thinking about anything when I had my NDE like I’m busy dying I don’t have thoughts

They missed out "I wish I spent more time arguing online with strangers"

[-] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago

[-] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago

I don't think that's what they're saying, but I am completely onboard with this.

[-] FatherPeanut@pawb.social 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Making a bold prediction here: in 30-40 years' time, one of those will be replaced with something to the effect of "Waste less time on the internet"

I've noticed this with videogames, and tbh I'm kinda surprised more people haven't connected it to there yet. Videogames can be a hobby, but if it's all someone does at home for mental stimulation, I don't forecast it's living to the fullest. When going through a new experience, it can be memorable, yet the grind-heavy nature of most modern games doesn't produce much for memorable moments, and often is forgotten in a month's time save for the knowledge of how much time was spent on that.

Social media is rather similar, in that it mirrors the addictive nature of locking your attention and supplying unmemorable mental stimulation, at the cost of substantial time.

In my completely nonbiased and objective opinion that's factual in every way: This is not healthy. I dont feel anyone will look back and say, "I wish I spent more time getting upvotes," or "I wish I got that cool skin in the game I dont play anymore."

[-] psycholocomotor@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I know I'm absorbed in the internet during most of my waking hours, but my real life is a hellish, traumatizing wasteland. (The experience of being trans in a car-dependant desolated city in an advanced state of capitalist alienation + severe trauma that I cannot realistically get the mental healthcare for or support here to deal with.)

I remember very little of my life. It's like waking up from surgeries for short periods of time and experiencing little melancholic vignettes before going back under for unknown amounts of time. Laughing at stupid comments online in places like this is one of my only sources of joy.

Facing reality isn't the solution to my situation, yet. I need sedation, and maybe then I can recover from my injuries enough to survive going through that process.

I still can't get over randomly seeing Japanese words in an English context (especially when written in Kanji) haha. But yes, I do maintain a huge (thick? tall? lot of? big?) 建前 with almost everyone.

[-] alapakala@quokk.au 1 points 2 hours ago

I did it on a wedding to top it off.
None of the slave contractees want to see me again.
There’s unionship celebrations, and there’s forcing people to marry for publicity ceremonies to settle the allegations of “premarital sex.”
Quick to façade when rumors show up, but not façade when I hear crying from the bride that she doesn't want marry the groom then.

People really love convenient lies. Many times more bearable than deal with your own moral misguidings. And thing that upsets me the most, is they know they are being hypocritical, and enjoy every Machiavellian aspect of it.

You should aim to have these regrets because it's the people who lived long enough to be interviewed on their death bed that have them. The people who died suddenly probably have regrets like "I wish I hadn't been texting while driving."

[-] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 32 points 1 day ago

"I wish I hadn't been pulled into the ore crushing machine by my sleeve while on the 15th hour of my shift because it's the only way in this town to make enough money to pay for the medicine my son needs to fight the disease this town and refinery caused in him"

But I guess maybe that counts as "I wish I didn't work so much"

[-] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

"I wish I had more bullet holes on my wingtips and the central section of the fuselage, and maybe some on the elevator."

Notice who's in the sample: people who had enough to afford end-of-life care and was open enough for a stranger to sit by the bed and listen. That's mostly the middle class, privileged compared to those who die with nobody asking them anything. But read regret #2 again. These are people who worked their whole lives producing someone else's income, with better rights than a servant but the same basic position. At the very end, they see it, when they don’t have to work for somebody else anymore! Above them, the wealthy die in private settings, with staff under confidentiality agreements. Ware couldn't have gotten near them, and their nurses couldn't have talked even if she had. Below the middle class, nobody has the time for retrospection. So this isn't the regret of the dying. It's the regret of the people who were allowed to be asked and had education and money to talk to someone.

Well I'm at the halfway point of my life and only the last two apply to me, so I guess I'm doing better than I thought. Yay for me, I suppose? IDK I'm still broke and miserable like the rest of the working class, which is why #1 doesn't count. That one is completely out of my control so long as we have billionaires.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
