important lesson in explaining WHY instructions/rules exist and not just giving them without context

My great grandmother had an arc shaped burn mark on her windowsill. I asked her where it was from.

Turns out the crystal ball on the piano wasn't always on the piano.

Why did your house burn down?

It was spirits.

The souls of the dead burned your house down?

No, I was drunk on liquor and forgot to cover my ball.

What?

When you're half drunk pondering your orb

I suspect there's a lot of crossover between people who buy crystal balls, and people who forget to turn off their hair straighteners, ovens etc.

My mom didn't trust the little lever thingie on her curling iron to hold it up off the bathroom sink properly. So she would rest it on a folded-up towel instead. And she would sometimes forget about it and leave it there on full heat. Somehow the house is still standing.

No, a ghost definitely plugged in the curling iron while we weren't home. There's no other possibility

They’re all Sagittariuses?

[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

I can definitely imagine buying a crystal ball at a tagsale, and not thinking of this.

[-] Yeno@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

I very nearly had this happen. Luckily the crystal ball burnt a hole straight through the curtains, but didn't catch them on fire.

So never buy a crystal ball. Good to know.

It once happened with an entire building. And not the way that it sounds.

Turns out if you make a building a giant parabolic reflector, it'll reflect sunlight and gently melt a few cars.

The middle school near my house is sort of like this, not truly parabolic but the side facing south has three highly reflective glass faces at slightly odd angles relative to each other, just a few degrees each. It is insane how much heat even this produces in the morning if you're standing in the right place. In winter when we have snow, there's always a nice green bare patch in this spot.

It's as good a theory as anything else.

How does she know it's not the spirits burning down your house? It's not like she's psyc- Oh, right.

It's always the side eye that hits harder
