Thank fuck, I was really worried. Poor animal did nothing wrong.

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 14 hours ago

They should put some dangerous animal in there, so people didn't just hop into the enclosure

Nigel Farrage?

[-] BreakingBigfoot@lemmus.org 7 points 17 hours ago

The guy darwined himself.... And the fact that would even be up for suggestion under the circumstances make me wonder if human's hubris has any solution besides depopulation, less we forget a tiger doesn't even bloody belong in the UK at some pen humans dumped it in to. probably hungry AF, what they all expect!? The tiger did nothing wrong.

Sounds like the only person at fault has already been put down. Self solving problem.

Yeah sorry this is pretty horrible. From descriptions of the event it seems to me that that he was neurodivergent and didn't really understand the danger.

Update: His family have now had to issue a public statement about his death, describing that he had been struggling with mental illness for several years. The fact that they've had to do this at all is completely gutting.

[-] dubs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 hours ago

Where are you seeing that? I didn't see it anywhere in either article. Is there another one?

[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 2 points 7 hours ago

Hey wow you're still here. I worried you might have been lost with that yandex thing.

[-] davetortoise@reddthat.com 1 points 7 hours ago

I'm guessing based on people's reports of his behaviour before it happened. See my response to im_fine_sandy

[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 1 points 10 hours ago

You probably don't have enough information to reach that conclusion but suffice to say the guy was not of sound mind and is probably deserving of sympathy.

For the Americans, that doesn't mean the cat has to die. Sometimes there's no goodie vs baddie narrative.

Below is the family's statement so anyone paying attention already knows this. The victim was severely mentally ill and for his own safety couldn't be taken out in public without a carer.

It's true that I'm not really paying attention to this.

[-] davetortoise@reddthat.com 1 points 7 hours ago

I'm guessing based on the fact that he attended the park alone, was wearing headphones, and was visibly excited to see the tiger and asked strangers to take pictures of him with it. This suggests that he may have had sensory issues and a special interest in tigers which would be typical of autism/aspergers.

I agree it's not really enough to be certain and I don't want to go too far down the path of speculation. But it seems very possible to me, and I've personally known people with severe autism who I could imagine putting themselves in harms way like this without realising the danger. And it's just so sickening hearing people all over the internet talk about this persons' death in such a callous way without knowing anything of his personal circumstances.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago

That's so sad, poor fellow

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Awful in this case.

I do recommend jumping into a tiger pit for actual suicide attempts though. Like i dont endorse suicide at all, but if its going that way anyway.

Either you'll die and give a caged animal a chance to feel alive again, or you win the fight somehow and become a legend overnight.

I can only assume you've never even watched a documentary of a big cat taking down a deer let alone seen it happen.

It is an awful way to go, bleeding out while your limbs are torn from your conscious body can't be pleasant.

[-] Sina@beehaw.org 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

In most cases the "offending" tiger would be killed, why take a majestic tiger with you?

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 12 hours ago

I suspect the probably less painful methods of death than being ripped apart by a lion.

[-] tamal3@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

Predators that harm people are so frequently euthanized that if I were suicidal I wouldn't go this way for fear of the tiger being killed for my killing.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago

Horrifying way to go imo. As someone with multiple attempts, I feel like that would reliably scare me away from that method.

[-] scratchee@feddit.uk 5 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Tigers probably don’t want to be shot during a rescue attempt.

Also, not saying there’s an afterlife, especially 1 shared afterlife, but just in case, I don’t want to go to any afterlife that contains a tiger holding a grudge waiting to ask me why I got it shot. I’m not suicidal, but if I were I think an eternity of beef with an angelic tiger might be reason to rethink.

[-] slartibartfast141@piefed.zip 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There are a number of comments which lack any care that a human died. Like caring for a tiger and a person is mutually exclusive and dismissing the person shows more love of animals or something.

[-] FluidBeef@quokk.au 7 points 2 days ago

It’s not like it got a taste for human blood. It always had that, it just never got the opportunity before.
