Adding to what others have said: It’s part of the tree inventory. It may be used by maintenance/physical plant, but can also be part of an arboretum status for the campus with a publicly facing GIS map and attributes.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 31 points 1 day ago

I think that’s what note they’re in. 440 is A, so that tree is tuned to A.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 14 hours ago

That's the TF2 tree

[-] iceberg314@slrpnk.net 58 points 1 day ago

Tree tag. I'm not a tree tree doctor, but that kinda looks like an ash. Around where I live too ash trees are commonly tagged and checked up on to monitor invasive emerald ash borer populations

[-] DougPiranha42@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

You kinda sound like a tree doctor to me…

[-] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago

They said they're not a tree tree doctor. They didn't say anything about whether they were a tree doctor

[-] DougPiranha42@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

How did I miss that. Sneaky tree doctor we have here.

[-] prex@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago

So if a tree doctor doctor treats tree doctors, then what does a tree tree doctor treat?

[-] Benchamoneh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 22 hours ago

It's just a tree looking after its own kind

[-] realworldschlitz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

“He speaks for the trees! If you mess with those tags, he’ll break your fucking knees!”

[-] Xyre@lemmus.org 103 points 1 day ago

Pretty sure they're id tags for trees. Basically a way for the maintenance people to track and log data for each tree.

[-] Portosian@sh.itjust.works 98 points 1 day ago
[-] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago

You could represent the log data as a tree view.

[-] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 day ago

Gotta log the log data in a log file.

But that file gets corrupted, so you look at the binary.

So that you can log the log data log's data into a separate log file.

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 14 points 1 day ago

IF THAT FILE ISN'T NAMED log.log, I'M GONNA BE SO MAD!

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Perhaps something like log-44-20261013.log

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 14 hours ago

Those are the rolling files, the main log log is log.log. I insist!

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Okay, but be careful. If the log rolls uncontrollably, it might hit something.

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 14 hours ago

That's part of the arborial enjoyment.

[-] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 8 points 1 day ago

Better organize these log.log files in a treeview.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

please hang name tags below each of these, so the trees get dignified names (such as “shady mcshade oak”) instead of just numbers

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I want to name one!

"Mentos: The Fresh Air Maker"

Kinda catchy, might need a marketing campaign, hmmm

[-] Balisada@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

You can't name one, but in Melborne, Austrailia, you can email one.

http://melbourneurbanforestvisual.com.au/#mapexplore

They have mapped many of their trees and given each one an email address. According to their webpage it was really so that when a tree was damaged or diseased someone could simply "email the tree" and someone would be able to put the issue into the "lets get this issue fixed" queue.

But what happened was that folks were emailing the trees for non-repair type of issues and were general emails like the tree was living person, like an ENT from Lord of the Rings.

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I was at the beginning "This is friggin awesome! Exactly what tech is supposed to be about"

Then the bomb dropped, man people are weird.

Case in point I was part of one of the first streaming companies online (2000). We would stream wrestling as our biggest draw until we got major sports onboard.

We had an email link for "support" for tech support.

A few days before the wrestling events we would get FLOODED with support emails... Nope not for why they can't get the test stream to work. But to support their favorite wrestler. It was insane the shit these people would write.

[-] Balisada@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

"Email Support". Yeah, I can kind of see someone wanting to support their favorite wrestler, and I bet people got really insane with their messages. Wrestling has some pretty interesting fans.

Perhaps if we named more tree's people would take better care of them.

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Naming trees would definitely work. Case in point my buddy owns a big cattle farm. When his kids got older they named some of the calf's. He warned them thats not a good idea. Kids are kids and they ignored him.

Now he's not a beef or dairy farmer. He's a breeder, he has a stable of high quality cows and inseminates them for the calf's.

So his kids name a bunch of the calf's, bottle raise them w/ mom cows help then they goto auction. They were devastated that "Daisy" and "Jemirqui" where gone over a weekend.

They never named another cow after that, they learned it was a business the hard way. But humanizing them did change the dynamic. Like with naming tree's...

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

My wife names our trees and organizes their planting location on a regular basis because moving plants is good. She otherwise has absolutely no interest. Fruit trees? Yeah those go in the back under the shade. Right where the sun can go F itself. I'm quietly screaming for help.

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

You are experiencing a severe form of spousal abuse and tree abuse. Fruit trees no it the sun, moved around? I never took any of my plants for a walk like a puppy...

I feel for you my friend, I really do.

She's a little ADHD bipolar and autistic but without any clear indication. So I get to go around the house fixing things like Phillips screws that look like X and not correctly installed like +. I had to replace all our switch and outlets with unbreakable ones so I could tighten the screws and then get them to be + oriented but without cracking the plates.

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I had a guy I worked w/ in construction that had the same thing about phillips had to + on the finish side of the build. So we cracked a lot of wall plates too.

Except he would lose his shit if you didn't, I found another gig soon after.

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

At least you don't love the guy. Lol.

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah I was thinking that, just didn't want to bring up that aspect up. Its got to be trying, but at least you found love! So many others never do, so take some solace in that :)

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Every day.

One of my engineering buddies got a bipolar partner too. I don't know any details except that she burns thru his cash and got big big implants when she didn't feel that she was beautiful enough. Life has pluses and minuses. One time (you could dox me with a single person about this) but I was driving down a particularly famous road coming back from work when I suddenly realized how boring my life was going to be until I ended 6 feet under. It was a Friday. On Monday I started looking for dates. Eventually I met my wife. But that Friday drive I wished for my life to be a little more exciting and I washed to be surrounded by beautiful Asian women to make my life more exotic... And I should have been way way more specific. Also I did ask for beautiful exotic and I had to face palm already so many times. That flying spaghetti monster has a weird sense of humour. At Christmas I was like one in three guys in the entire family until I had my boys and some of the girls started getting married.

If I ever get to wish again I'm gonna chatGPT that prompt for a few weeks. Let's start with I wish for a Billion dollars so I can share it with my loved ones who happen to be my family and friends, but it has to be real monetary type American dollars and not obtain thru the loss of my health, my extremities... Specially little Johnny....not thru any other such loss, just thru happy coincidences and luck and good good things that are not bloody or personally degrading. And if I live longer than my wife I will hope to be surrounded by beautiful Asian women who love men very much... Damn that's gonna be my kids again! Okay, from the top....

[-] Ninja876@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Wow thats a lot to deal with and take in.

Take some comfort as a guy that has dated Asian Americans, Mainland Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans they are all a pain in the ass like the rest. Japanese especially. That whole subservient this is a myth in my experience, not that I was looking for that.

The grass isn't always greener, you just haven't seen the other side.

Now the Japanese girl was stupid rich. So that might have been a factor. Every stupid rich girl I have dated is always a total nightmare.

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Well it's been 25 years of this. It's fine. The cultural differences are important though. But if you let her do her thing you'll learn. I think men are usually like this. We generally look for an adventure and culture is part of that. Ot might be our last name officially but it's all about the mother's DNA. That's the blood lineage. So we're just sort of there to take it all in and do what men do.... Get rid of the mice, the cats, the spiders or whatever. Life is good.

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

My university also used these to keep track of pest treatment (ground wasps). They got pretty pissed when people started removing the tags because “they hurt the trees.”

The botanists in the biology dept have the answers you seek. I suspect there is a map of your campus trees, and this one is on it. It's common for universities to have an arboretum on campus. Find the map and look for trees you've never seen before! I bet you can find a ginkgo or a cork tree.

Hmm, there is a greenhouse on campus, though I suspect any tree stuff would be handled by the agriculture department, it's a ways off of campus cause farms

they do it at our school to identify maintain the tree. unfortunately they are putting it on the invasive, fire-prone eucalyptus blue gums at our university, plus also bottle brush too.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

Nice work. For every 100 you collect turn them in at campus security for a free tree!

[-] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

The tree is going through a rebellious phase.

[-] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

“Treena is a punk rocker”

[-] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

That's the license plate for insurance. If the tree drives like the axe in the wood.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

tree law is no laughing matter

It's an old MOPAR engine
