Think you can still bring a bottle of your favourite Niagara red or Ontario-made whisky to your grandparents’ place in Florida?

Think again, according to trade lawyers and the Canadian Snowbird Association, who say there appears to be no personal exemption when it comes to Donald Trump’s import ban on a wide array of Canadian alcohol products.

That means you can no longer bring even a single bottle of Canadian-made beer, wine or spirits into the U.S. — whether you’re willing to pay duty on it or not, said international trade lawyer Barry Appleton.

“A ban is an absolute prohibition. A tariff is a price a person can pay, and a personal allowance can forgive a duty. Neither can make a prohibited good admissible,” said Appleton, co-director of the Center for International Law at New York Law School, and a fellow at the University of Waterloo’s Balsillie School of International Affairs.

This is kind of funny to read after spending nearly 2 years listening to snowbirds talk about how hard they're not gonna snowbird anymore now that the US is meaner to them. I wonder if the booze ban will be the real last straw.

Many boomer snowbirds only care about themselves.

"Boomer," colloquially, but the bigoted conversation my other comment mentions included two couples under 60. This is a privilege issue, not age.

As an American, curious if younger Canadians have dropped drinking as hard as Americans have?

Major US alcohol distributors and makers, brewers are going bankrupt or panicking, it's sea change here--and that was before the self-inflicted trade war and disastrous foreign policy approach. Course the US alcohol industry followed it up by charging more for 0.0 beer...

Personally I drink more for the taste than the alcohol now, and I switched to low-alcholol or alcohol-free beers and mocktails.

Yea, 7% IPAs are out, 3% craft ales or bitters are in for me. Sits better in my stomach and has plenty of flavor.

It fuckin' sucks because up until a few years ago I was all over any 2-3.5% beers I could find but the options to choose from were near non existent. I got diagnosed with though celiac and can't drink beer anymore and suddenly the ultra light beers are everywhere, mocking me :(

Glutenberg or Whistler gluten free beers are for you.

[-] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Both are great! Admittedly I'm a bit sick of them though and wish there was more options. There's also both 5+% which isn't the same

Alcohol free beers: alcohol tax prices without the actual taxes. I really enjoy them, but I'm being ripped off.

Same, except I've switched entirely craft beer from local microbreweries.

Weed is legal here coast to coast. Yes, there is less drinking.

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

While weed isn’t legal at the federal level in the US it’s legal in many states and dispensaries are almost if not more ubiquitous than in Canada assuming you don’t live in a conservative state.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Guess you have never visited Canada. At my old house, there were 5 weed shops within a 5 minute walk from my front door.

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

Um I live in Canada lol. In Ontario where dispensaries are every two feet. It’s the same in California and Colorado.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Ha ha, fair.

Alcohol sales have been slowly dropping off every year here in Canada ever since we legalized weed, but it really took a nose dive the last few years, and again after Diva Donnie's tantrums.

Yes, young Canadians have also stopped drinking alcoholic drinks, instead it's shifted more towards mocktails and Sobrii non alcoholic spirits type drinks.

Same from what I understand around Europe.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Pretty much, yeah. Legalized weed kinda nicks the easy-access inebriation that alcohol was kind of reliant on as a market, and then there's just more and more data that illustrates just how harmful alchohol is even with low consumption. Plus, booze is just really expensive here. If you're in Ontario, it is like 40-50 bucks for a 40z spirit, or about 4-5 bucks per tall boy. Comparatively, I can grow a few weed plants in my backyard for less than 150 bucks in the plants and supplies, and provide for the whole village if I wanted to.

I keep thinking I'm young but I've been working full time for >20 years now. My beer consumption hasn't faltered at all because I was buying Canadian before. The actually young guys I work with (under 30) are once or twice a week drinkers and 3-5 times a week smokers. There is a shift away from trunking but I don't think it's driven by trade, it's more that they see my beer gut lead me into the room and decide they want something different.

[-] nik282000@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Fuckem. A bunch of boomers and genx that are spending a lifetime of Canadian income in the most backwards US state.

Stop spending Canadian money in the US you selfish fucks

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

WHY ARE YOU STILL GOING TO THE UNTIED STATES

[-] altasshet@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I've been intentionally misspelling it that way since Trump has been back in office
