You don't get a pass because your 13 year olds of choice are japanese and drawn characters. It's creepy as fuck and I am judging you for it.

I have to ask how this is an unpopular take? Like even in online spaces, I see people with anime PFPs getting a lot of shit and anti-lolicon sentiment is on the rise, thankfully.

In what space would this take be unpopular in any way?

[-] brave_lemmywinks@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I don't think it unpopular, it's the most normie take ever. Anime and Hentai are just another medium for every fetish that exists and there's some really weird stuff out there. Personally I don't get those specific ones, but also don't see it as harming anyone, and also that it doesn't "activate" the same part of the brain.

[-] neatchee@piefed.social 61 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I literally run a Mastodon server specifically for non-toxic English-first anime/etc fans and I understand where you're coming from. I created the community for a lot of the same reasons

That said, you are projecting an extreme puritanical Western philosophy onto a culture that is dramatically different for deeply ingrained cultural reasons.

Teenage stories are prevalent because of the concept "seishun" (springtime of youth). Japanese culture is extremely rigid and conformist, and as a consequence highschool is viewed as the time in life where you have the most freedom to try new things, express yourself, and discover your passions. Watching teens experience their first love, for example, is a cathartic release for people who don't have the freedom to make drastic changes to their identity anymore. It is a depiction of someone discovering a new identity, and embracing change.

"Kawaii" (cute) culture has deep roots in Shinto spiritualism. For a large part of Japanese history, due to mortality rates among children below the age of 7, children were literally considered not fully human until they reached a certain age. They were "close to the spirits" because they might be reclaimed by the spirit world at any time. This, along with some other tidbits, led to the trope where a spiritual being regresses to look childlike when they lose their spiritual power. It is "closer to the spirit realm". And because there are many stories about being careful not to malign spirits, this became a reverence for childlike things.

Yes, especially among westerners, the are a lot of people with transgressive tendencies who gravitate towards the medium because it's an easy mask for their predilections. But you would do well to more about the history of the culture and medium you're attacking.

Because the way you present your position right now just makes you look like an ignorant westerner who didn't bother to ask "why" before painting an entire culture with a single brush.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 23 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I hear this and sympathize.

…But. Honestly? It’s not just western fans that are the problem. A few anime shows I researched seem to use underage sex appeal (or other problematic depictions, like toxic relationships) to draw attention, to make money.

At some point that’s not a cultural difference or misunderstanding; it’s pandering. The showrunners know what they’re doing. I’d argue that is exploitation of Japanese culture.

And even if they’re rejected by fans like you, these problematic shows seem to be immensely popular.

There is a lot of anime that creeps me out.

There’s some good stuff out there, but Jesus Christ is there a large pile of problematic anime.

[-] Elting@piefed.social 26 points 5 days ago

Its like the large pile of racist old cartoons you never see because they don't run them anymore.

[-] OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago

Sure, except we haven't reached the stage of culturally condemming and not running the creepy anime shows yet and they're still really popular.

Ooh, this is a spicy one, and definitely unpopular.

Is that thinking logically consistent? Yes. Is it pervasive? Yes. Is it sane?

Does putting a badger as my profile picture mean I want to fuck the badger? Oh god, is my manager a closet badger buggerer?!? Holy Jesus, does my elderly coworker wants to fuck her cat, and does the younger guy wants to fuck a Ferrari... What kind of twisted society do I inhabit?!?

Nope, definitely not sane.

Sorry but that kind of inference of "profile picture = thing I want to fuck" is definitely unpopular for a reason.

[-] deft@lemmy.wtf 11 points 4 days ago

I disagree I think that's really poor framing.

Backgrounds are a great example. A classic dude with his hot biker chick background vs grandma with a background of her grandkids.

You're not gonna imply the same why to it because they both are backgrounds. But I know why they both have those backgrounds.

Same vibe if you decorate your place with this. Grandma has kids of his grandkids, classic dude has hot babes lining his walls. Different reasons, one is still cringe and uncomfortable

You are free to think weebs are wierd but it is cunterproductive to water down the term pedophile to include people who like anime with school aged characters.

I think media that is creepy, wierd or gross need to be allowed to exist. It is important to be able to explore topics that make people uncomfortabe and I think that freedom necessitates the tolerance of works whose artistic merit is unclear as long as they don't cause direct harm.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

Anime doesn't depict the sexualisation of minors as a bad thing. It normalises, relishes, and straight up comodifies it.

[-] OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago

The normalization of sexualized children is harmful.

It would probably be for the best if pedophiles and child sexual abusers weren't considered the exact same by the general public considering one harms people and the other appears to be a mental disorder (or maybe just a sexuality), but that won't happen for a long time if ever.

[-] OliveBrittle@piefed.ca 4 points 3 days ago

No, I'm calling this out.

We have a disagreement in another community to which you name call me and mock me having depression in response to that disagreement, and then you come here and essentially vaguepost calling me pedo adjacent because of my profile picture?

I like Osaka because she's relatable and gives me comfort as a character that speaks to who I am, not because I think she's attractive. I genuinely have no words to how low this is.

I worry about your social circle that you think this is unpopular.

[-] OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net 10 points 4 days ago

I'm talking about the people I see online.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Shit like this is why I stopped watching anime. The normalized pedophilia and xenophobia is too much.

(Unrelated but another reason I stopped watching was because I couldn't stand the squeaky falsetto female voices that Japanese culture forces women to have. I always watched a dub whenever possible.)

[-] polar_bear@lemmus.org 4 points 4 days ago

There are plenty of great animes without any of the aforementioned, don't think you need to quit it all together. Just avoid the obvious glorifying of sexual assault/harassment and child/teenager sexualization ones and call out people for supporting and normalizing those.

Based opinion

Idgaf if the character you're drooling over is canonically X, Y or Z; if they have been drawn like a child then the artist drawing them has done so intentionally (two points if you can guess why they draw characters like that)

[-] AgentOrangesicle@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I'm sure you're reading into it too much. Artists don't code their fetishes into things.

[-] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 5 points 4 days ago

That might seem like a joke but it's kno- ahem

Not sure this is an unpopular opinion. At least not the people I know unless they are defending it behind closed doors.

[-] Tattorack@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

But... But you don't understand! That mostly naked 12 year old looking girl who behaves like a young, spoiled immature brat is really the oldest, most powerful...... Uh......... Demon or something from the... Uh... Whatever hell circles.

Or was it a 12,000 year old dragon who looks like a little girl and gets stalked by a middle aged man? No wait, that was Fire Emblem.

Oh by the way; this is also why I'm uncomfortable with Midna. Yes I know what her proper appearance is supposed to be. But until then she looks like a weird little girl in oddly revealing skin tight clothes.

We are all comfortable with sexual liberation until a point we are not. The ideological framework underpinning this has gaps.

Adults with anime school girl avatars

Some of them, I'm sure. Some people I think just have a favorite character or look like them or relate to them somehow. I live in Japan and it's not uncommon for adults to have a character for an existing anime or even something drawn for them in that style based on their own appearance (men and women, old and young) in LINE (messaging app) or whatnot.

As for the rest (i.e. being actually attracted to or overly-obsessed with), yeah, that's getting in to creep/pedo territory.

[-] TeaWithDani@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Exactly, as someone called out in this post: I really just like Osage-chan. I find her super relatable and fun.

That said its not ok to be weird and have "waifus" that are not age appropriate for you.

If you watch anime as an adult you have to grow up and recognize you are watching media targeted for kids and teenagers. You can't engage with it like you would if you were still that age.

If I were to watch Lucky Star as a teenager, I might have a crush on some of the characters. But as an adult I can recognize the best girl is their teacher Nanako. 🤟

I hate how normalized modern anime sexualizes kids and the people who cheer it on.

[-] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Absolutely agree. There is a lot of hand waving and justification going on in the comments.

I don't think kids as characters or even adults regressed into children is the problem so much for me, as the sexualization of them. And there is a definite issue with that across anime. "Fan Service" is a very real and often utilized trope. You can have all the cultural things people mentioned in an anime without panty shots and adults wanting intimacy with children.

Unfortunately since the pedo apologists defend the bad parts of this as if it's just a "culture" difference, it's hard to see any use of child anime characters for something like an avatar as anything but gross predilection.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I have seen some anime and western animation that takes place in highschool, or highschool age, so I guess I get to have a casual opinion.

And that opinion is that when I see animated characters in highschool I don't think of actual highschool kids, because highschool kids are gross children. Similar to how Hollywood will have a TV show about teens and cast a bunch of 28 year olds to play them, there's not really any connection or association in my mind between these characters and real youths I might see on my walk to work or on the bus.

The reason that highschool keeps coming up is because the setting has a lot of constraints and dynamism. True children have no agency in the world, and adults are set in their ways or part of the system, whereas teens are becoming people, and so there's a question about who they'll become. There are adults and structures that have some level of authority over them, which can make the stories have conflict, but those adults don't hold ultimate authority like they would with toddlers or something, so there's a chance of victory. This is why even shows that aren't about highschool, like Avatar the Last Airbender, still feature kids in an age where if there was highschool, they'd be in it. Or fantasy adventure + "highschool" like Owl House. They're stories of self-discovery that most adults don't experience because they already self-discovered and they're through that now.

So my answer is that I don't want to convince you of anything. If, when you see a character that's meant to be in highschool, you feel like that is a highschool person in real life, that's fine. And I could see that being creepy. But when I experience an animated character they don't feel like a real person to me, they're an abstract sketch of a person, lacking in detail, and one of the details they lack is "actual organic age and the implications of the body characteristics that come with it". Instead they're just "confident" or "awkward" or "shy" or "bold, but reckless" or whatever.

There's nothing about them that feels anything like any real person I've met or seen.

[-] missingno@fedia.io 18 points 5 days ago

Sturgeon's Law states that 90% of everything is shit, and this absolutely applies to anime. The worst of the worst can be disgusting as hell, and I hate how often minors are sexualized.

That said, the good stuff is good! I can name a handful of high school romance anime/manga I've really enjoyed (Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Horimiya, You and I are Polar Opposites), and what these series have in common is that they're about romance, not sex. The characters aren't presented as sex objects for the audience to lust over, they're characters in a coming-of-age story, and the stories I just named are all kept wholesome and PG-13. I would honestly recommend watching these just to see if they change your opinion at all.

High school settings are popular because that's often the most pivotal turning point in a person's life - ideal for a coming-of-age story. For many people that's often when they had their most active social lives, and for a writer it's a pretty easy shortcut to giving the cast a reason to interact with each other.

And honestly, I think a large part of it also has to do with nostalgia for the audience. I'm sure you've heard the term 'loneliness epidemic' used a lot these days, high school settings can be appealing to those who lack much of a social circle today and maybe feel like their lives have all been downhill since then.

I don't doubt for a minute that a good number of people with waifu avatars probably want to fuck the anime schoolgirl. But I think that there are a lot more people who just wish they could be the anime schoolgirl.

Are "reborn as villainess" pedo bait? It's still high school, even if it's victorian/fantasy era, and have a lot of the same tropes.

I wish Japan would slow down with all of it. You get really deep and cool animes sometimes only to have it covered in weird stuff. I can count on my hand the amount of shows I can recommend in general without coming off as a creep.

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
