Please vote...if you are younger than 40...really...please vote

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 38 points 2 weeks ago

Hey now, I’m 41, and I think that detonating billionaires is a fine first step in societal reform. Don’t count out the middle-aged! We’re leftists too!

[-] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I think it's less about older=conservative but more about making the younger voting block something politicians have to cater to.

If you don't vote, they don't try to take your interests to heart as much as the people who do vote. Why bother catering to people who won't get you into office? It's wasted effort.

This is partially why you see people who talk about issues old people care more about, like social security, than things younger people care about, like how the fucking earth is on fire and if we don't fix it no one will have a planet anymore.

[-] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago

Or if you paid attention in school!!

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.social 15 points 2 weeks ago

Except if you want to vote for republicans than maybe stay home.

[-] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They're still on facebook, cant get em from here.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Vibes-Based Voting is how we got Trump in the first place.

If you have shit politics, please STAY THE FUCK HOME. I've had too many fucking Redcaps showing up in election booths for the last ten years, thank you very much.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

People say I have shit politics because I want to abolish work, school, and the human concepts of “hours” and “minutes.” Should I still vote?

I’m also over 40 so between this and OP’s comment it would be pretty convincing.

[-] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I’m also over 40

My interpretation wasn't "please don't vote if you're over 40"; it was that older people (sorry) statistically don't need to be convinced to vote nearly as much as younger people.

As in "hey, dipshits under 40", not "ho, ye enlightened under-40s!".

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It wouldn’t help anyway. Even if I don’t vote I’ll still be subjected to the psychological abuse of political coverage every year.

Really I want to never hear from any of you ever again.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Really I want to never hear from any of you ever again.

We appreciate your visit, but I feel like you should log off and never return.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

As long as I’m subjected to humanity I’m going to subject humanity to me.

[-] yucandu@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

and the human concepts of “hours” and “minutes.”

Please don't, it will make converting all my measurements very tedious.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Europeans spent 40 years trying to ignore American politics, and look where it got them.

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 12 points 2 weeks ago

Europeans spent 500 years making everyone suffer for European politics and now they can't handle that the feed on their pretty lights box isn't about them.

[-] Dreamcatcher@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It doesn't need to be about either one of us. This is narcissistic thinking.

When something politically significant happens in the EU, it gets contained in the political community hell. When something politically significant happens in the USA, it's forced everywhere and you can't escape it even if you don't give the slightest of fucks.

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's gotta be about someone, and I'm not going to complain in fifty years when it's all about China (because I'll be dead)

[-] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

This is not an insult or coming from a place of ego.

But.

The US affects more people globally than the EU. So news about what the biggest gun in the world is doing is going to go everywhere, since it affects everyone directly.

And with most of the users living in big gun land or effected by it, that info will spread. The EU doesn't effect as many people, especially the US, so less people hear about it.

In fairness, Europe was the punching bag of its neighbors for the 1000 years prior.

But otherwise, I gotta say, I've been hearing a lot more about global geopolitics as a matter of public interest generally speaking. All the Latin American elections are big news, especially with Brazil being the latest pink-tide domino to fail. The Pacific Rim states regularly make headlines. Everyone who has even a casual eye towards global affairs is keyed up on the BJP anti-democratic turn on the eve of India's general election. Americans are watching with bated breath on every election from the UK to Hungary, given how they threaten to shape the Ukraine/Russia war.

If anything, American politics hasn't been getting as much coverage by comparison. It's weird not to have the entire month of October be one Surprise after another, during an election year. Hell, we skated right through prime Silly Season in August and everyone was too fixated on diesel prices and AI stocks to notice political bullshit.

Y'all got off easy this time.

Wat. Macedonian empire? Roman Republic? Ancient Greece?

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

In regards to your opener sentence: Bitch, what.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusades

https://www.britannica.com/place/Timeline-of-the-Roman-Empire

Hell, west Rome fell to other Europeans. Viking Age, Europeans. You had Charles Martel and his little moment at Tours but at the end of the day you're just talking about neighbors going to war with each other which is just what neighboring regions do, historically.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

The Crusades were a catastrophe for Europe and mostly a nuisance for the late Byzantine Empire. The victory of the First Crusade was almost an accident and that was the only one that might be considered successful.

Meanwhile, the Moorish conquest of Southern Europe began in 711 AD and lasted until the Columbian Era - practically the year European Colonialism began.

And The Golden Horde dominated Eastern Europe for 200 years, starting in 1240, after wrecking their way into Poland and turning back when they ran out of anything worth conquering.

Hell, west Rome fell to other Europeans. Viking Age, Europeans.

Because all the action was in the Eastern Empire. The West was functionally abandoned by the time it fell.

And that was after centuries of humiliation, all the way up through what would become France, England, and Spain.

[-] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

You mean the Moopish conquest.

Brace yourself, "both sides same" is coming.

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

No, we blew up those datacenters.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately they'll figure something out by then.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 weeks ago

If we replaced First-past-the-post voting with something that let people transfer their votes if their preference didnt win, there wouldn't be a spoiler effect.

Then multiple parties could compete on who can beat the Republicans the best. Debates could be held even if Republicans dont show up.

These crucial reforms arent front and center in every blue state, so the democrats want the spoiler effect. Democrats want things this way. Democrats want people who are unrepresented by the two party system to remain unrepresented, right alongside the republicans. Both sides want the two party system to exist.

Unfortunately for the two mainstream political parties, the United States of America is more important then either of them. We will begin to heal when people get the chance to vote for who represents us best. Yall get to decide when that begins. Choose wisely.

Normally this is where I would link some videos on the flaws of FPTP voting, and on much more representative electoral alternatives. Those times have past us by.

Good luck everyone.

I like to spread that message, along with a helping of "there's no point in voting, it's all rigged anyway", in right wing message boards.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

People should vote, but how we vote is broken and we should have fixed it decades ago.

Peaceful revolution is not possible.

[-] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 11 points 2 weeks ago

Delete your Facebook, Insta, etc.

[-] roserose56@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

I'm gonna spam once more this and say that I have blocked all USA drama slop politics. I'm happy person with no forced feed USA politics drama slop in my feed. USA started all these wars in middle East, USA is killing the world, USA should pay for all the damages. No more fucking victims of USA.

[-] iocase@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

The best part about the fall of the american empire is their news will eventually become irrelevant. British news was globally important the same as the US for a long time until their empire got old tired and bankrupt.

[-] Etterra@discuss.online 8 points 2 weeks ago

Think of it as your opportunity to delete social media and never return.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

You’re right, you should use it MUCH less

[-] BigDiction@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

It’s chill I’ll just pretend the politics threads are NFL division meme war communities. Roughly the same if you substitute the nouns.

[-] Aqarius@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Almost more civil, in fact...

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

It will all change in November, ...when GTA6 is released.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Soon democracy in the Untied States will be over and you won't have to hear about elections in the Untied States for the foreseeable future

[-] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 weeks ago

Nah. Elections are a great propaganda tool once you have made sure you will win.

[-] NGC2346@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

You guys better not fuck this one up

Social media? How about getting calls at the crack ass of dawn and multiple texts as well as garbage in the mail? I used to love this time of year, This is Halloween, but now it's phone on silent--hill. FFS I can't wait for it to stop. At least I know who to vote for; so and so is for socialistic policies, reject Komrade. Ugh sorry cousin, I will vote for Komrade and go bowling.

Edit: They literally wrote Komrade
