I am so glad I didn't pivot to a CS job when I was given the chance. My future is locked in!

Edit: Yes, both my knees and back pain me, any day now AI will figure out the perfect chiropractic regime to soothe me.

seeing new cool software pop up was so cool, now everytime i see it i'm like "it's vibecoded slop isn't it" and the worst part is you don't even need to check because IT ALWAYS IS!!!

assume that every new software is llm-generated garbage, and don't bother checking, because you'll be right literally 99% of the time. it feels like programmers don't exist anymore. those who were fine with ai became sloperators incapable of thinking for themselves, and those who weren’t left the field entirely. with very few exceptions.

They don't seem to want to hire us anymore either 😞

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 49 points 2 days ago

I’m an exception. I very very rarely use AI in any of my projects. I even made a policy banning it that I use in most of my projects:

I love port87 BTW. Amazing stuff, it's exactly what I've wanted from email for a LONG ass time. Your LLM policy was just the cherry on top.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

Thank you so much! :D That’s so awesome to hear!

[-] mossy_@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

when you say "very, very rarely use AI", what is the exception? is it an LLM or something else?

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

The only thing I’ve used it for is this:

https://forge.sciactive.com/sciactive/thumbelina/src/branch/main/render_thumb.py

So up until last week, I could have said I never use it, but alas, I took the easy route and ruined my streak. Honestly, I’m thinking about learning python just to rewrite that file.

Nah, we're still here. You just have to look for us.

[-] Sas@piefed.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 days ago

You literally caught me in the process of leaving the field. I'm gonna take on the role of doing UI/UX optimizing in our applications in the future. At least if everything goes right. The whole advent of LLMs soured coding for me

[-] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I'm more into my slow cooker than software these days.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 18 hours ago

i decided to learn crochet, and you know what it's remarkably fucking similar in some ways
computing did arise from looms, so this is quite poetic

Please don't make those blankets that are just a 20 kilo pile of knots that don't keep anybody warm and you can't throw out until your auntie dies.

THAT'S LITERALLY HOW IT FEELS LMAO

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 days ago

You made a prompt that produced a pizza delivered to you, you made the pizza!

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago

OMG, LOVE IT

I want this to be turned into an animated series!!!

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

There was an attempt years ago, but it sadly never came to fruition.

[-] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org 2 points 16 hours ago

We'll have to revive it!

[-] notabot@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago

I like it, I'd like to read more, do you have the source?

[-] etaoin@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago

https://www.goblinscomic.org/ I believe!

I should read it again...

The conclusion to this one:

Loving that ending! Used the gems to destroy the gems

Because they just produce shit

The Claude logo does deserve special highlighting in this, because it really looks like they copied this rendition from Kurt Vonnegut:

Section from a book of Kurt Vonnegut where he has illustrated an asshole with a few lines ofva pencil. If you colored it orange, people probably wouldn't notice the difference to the Claude logo.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't so vehemently opposed to AI, because that way I could make an android app without having to read google's documentation. As bad as android is as a user, reading the developer documentation makes me genuinely want to strangle those responsible.

I just learned there are reams of documents on the exact way every app from now on needs to add in code to pad the top and bottom of the screen to accommodate whomever at google decided to make apps draw underneath the menu bar.

I'm normally against capital punishment, but this is an exception.

A user you have blocked has contributed to this repository

Accompanied with a F rating in SlopScan and an AI (or a Suspicious Activity) badge by AgentScan.

[-] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago

This is exactly how I felt about someone telling me about an open source low level CD dumping tool. Double whammy for having coderabbit.

I cannot wait until the inevitable future where our knight in shining armour leads us to victory and is able to educate everyone properly on why generative AI is something to be shunned on not just a societal level, but a worldly level.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
