seeing new cool software pop up was so cool, now everytime i see it i'm like "it's vibecoded slop isn't it" and the worst part is you don't even need to check because IT ALWAYS IS!!!

assume that every new software is llm-generated garbage, and don't bother checking, because you'll be right literally 99% of the time. it feels like programmers don't exist anymore. those who were fine with ai became sloperators incapable of thinking for themselves, and those who weren’t left the field entirely. with very few exceptions.

They don't seem to want to hire us anymore either 😞

I’m an exception. I very very rarely use AI in any of my projects. I even made a policy banning it that I use in most of my projects:

when you say "very, very rarely use AI", what is the exception? is it an LLM or something else?

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

The only thing I’ve used it for is this:

https://forge.sciactive.com/sciactive/thumbelina/src/branch/main/render_thumb.py

So up until last week, I could have said I never use it, but alas, I took the easy route and ruined my streak. Honestly, I’m thinking about learning python just to rewrite that file.

I love port87 BTW. Amazing stuff, it's exactly what I've wanted from email for a LONG ass time. Your LLM policy was just the cherry on top.

Thank you so much! :D That’s so awesome to hear!

Nah, we're still here. You just have to look for us.

You literally caught me in the process of leaving the field. I'm gonna take on the role of doing UI/UX optimizing in our applications in the future. At least if everything goes right. The whole advent of LLMs soured coding for me

Yeah, I'm more into my slow cooker than software these days.

i decided to learn crochet, and you know what it's remarkably fucking similar in some ways
computing did arise from looms, so this is quite poetic

Please don't make those blankets that are just a 20 kilo pile of knots that don't keep anybody warm and you can't throw out until your auntie dies.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
