depends, is the $19 on a Fortnite gift card

[-] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

Plot twist: $19 is actually a variable name, and you get to decide it's value

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 12 hours ago

This is so stupid. I'm probably not even going to want any crack tomorrow.

[-] phonics@lemmy.world 62 points 1 day ago

People in this thread expecting 2.7 billion dollars tomorrow but recieving 7 instead are in for a pleasant surprise.

[-] KernelTale@programming.dev 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I've re-read this all like 4 times. Can somebody please enlighten me?

Edit: ah, 5th time is the charm

[-] phonics@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Least it wasn't the 2.7 billionth time

[-] Uli@sopuli.xyz 29 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I should work on my reading comprehension. If understood it was going to be 7 billion not 2.7 billion, I definitely wouldn't have taken the $19.

[-] scops@reddthat.com 10 points 1 day ago

TBF, the meme puts the dollar sign in front of $19 but spells the word out after 7 billion dollars. It's the inconsistency that could lead to misreading.

[-] TheTetrapod@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

They also put a space after the "1." but not the "2.".

[-] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 3 points 19 hours ago

Then be surprised when they give you $1.19.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

Goddamm it! I would have waited if I knew it was 7!

Why do I rush through life and miss the details every damn time?

[-] Zagorath@quokk.au 3 points 16 hours ago

Hey man they're definitely not offering 5.04 trillion dollars.

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

Your username might have a clue in there for you

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 80 points 1 day ago

This is the same thing that they always try to get you with. Lol, like I'm some sort of sucker.

It's sort of like when they ask you, which is heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of gold. Lol. Like we all don't know how heavy gold is compared to feathers.

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 1 points 19 hours ago

Math checks out

[-] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 23 points 23 hours ago

I'd rather get neither. It will help me focus and grind that much harder.

/S

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 5 points 19 hours ago

The money you earn for yourself is better than the money you are given for free… or something.

[-] Draegur@lemmy.zip 14 points 21 hours ago
[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 5 points 19 hours ago

The timeline persists until you make a choice.

[-] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 54 points 1 day ago

$19 today is a guaranteed lunch, who knows what might happen tomorrow. Easy choice

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 3 points 19 hours ago

It’s true, you could die in your sleep tonight. You just never know!

[-] troglodytis@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

Hmmm

When is tomorrow?

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 day ago

Take the 19 and invest, compound interest is your friend, you can't make up lost time!

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 7 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

You only have to double it 29 times! If you're real savvy, then you only have to square it three times!

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 1 points 19 hours ago

Drop it all into bitcoin

[-] crenquis@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago

$19 can purchase many donuts today

[-] criticon@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago
[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago

Currency can be exchanged for goods and services.

[-] nightlily@leminal.space 6 points 1 day ago

Sounds like this idea could have no negative consequences!

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

Especially for me. The guy with all the donuts!

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 2 points 19 hours ago

I like where your head is at

[-] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago

Nice try, person with inside info about imminent catastrophic USD inflation

[-] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

hmm, tomorrow is a long way away but a billion can buy so much time and suffering

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 17 points 1 day ago

The 2.7 really does sell this post.

[-] kubica@fedia.io 18 points 1 day ago

Are you going to risk receiving 2.7 billion instead of 7 billion? Number 1 is the safest choice.

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

Fuck, I actually thought thought that initially. The parsing error had higher priority than the math check. And then I discarded that line of thought as irrelevant. The human brain is amazing and you are never good enough to not make "stupid" mistakes.

Nice try, but I know 2.7 billion dollars would literally crush me.

[-] Careless_Platypus@lemmus.org 3 points 19 hours ago

What if you received your money in the form of the same dollar value worth of feathers?

[-] AlligatorBlizzard@sh.itjust.works 1 points 18 hours ago

This feels like the premise of one of those stupid incremental games like the needles in the haystack one.

[-] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago

Double it and give it to the next person.

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

Hi, it's me, the next person

[-] kaykay@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago

I've heard that "time in the market beats timing the market".
So you should obviously get that money today already and just let compound interest or whatever do the rest

[-] RonnyZittledong@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Major corporations have this problem too. They would rather burn the entire thing to the ground and bury their reputation for that sweet, sweet quick buck.

I could really use a pack of Zyns today, so…

[-] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 2 points 21 hours ago

I don't like that they started an indexed list but then they either didn't add the second option or it's mean to be the bottom text and it actually reads 7 billion and not 2.7. Like what are we doing here?

Short answer: no, if I do become billionaire, I'm going to erase all the other billionaires via ~~assassinations~~ justice.

[-] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 2 points 19 hours ago

If I had to maintain my current lifestyle with either 7 billion dollars or 2.7 billion dollars I don't think I would notice the difference.

I'll just take the $19 142,105,264 times.

[-] StumblingWasabi@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

Now? Like now now? Tomorrow never comes so easy choice

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
