there is a song by the band called Morpheus, written and sung by Mark Sandman

When he was younger, he was a cab driver and got stabbed in the chest and almost died. He knew his life would not be as long as it should have been and always made sure to live it to the fullest.

He died on stage performing

one of his songs

Do not go quietly unto your grave

I think of this song a lot, this poem hits that same mark for me

I am also reminded of Tecumseh and his famous speech. I have found this to be so important that I hold it deep to my core. It is this same feeling

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

This is good medicine, thanks for sharing the poem

Thanks for sharing! I've always wanted more art and prose that reflect the feeling I get from this poem. I've always extended this poem to mean that no matter what you achieve, you will wish you had achieved more while on your deathbed. Therefore the only thing to be done to rage against the dying of the light is to unequivocally fight for what you believe in.

"Rage against the dying of the light" is one of the all-time greatest lines.

Favorite use of this:

As Simple bank was being shut down, the sysadmin turning off servers etc replaced the site with the poem.

While dns forwarded to PNC or whatever, anyone hitting the server directly, a nerd like me for example, would get the poem as the dying breath from a service that had been loved by many.

I found the excerpt in the movie, Interstellar particularly moving.

That's probably my favorite recitation, even though it's incomplete

I remember we read this for a middleschool emglish class. Along with To Build a Fire, Leiningen Versus the Ants among other works.

To Build a Fire is fuckin HEAVY

that shit stays with me, and its been years since I last read it

That poor dog, I always feel so bad for it.

[-] pdxfed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I only read it once and it always stuck with me. Jack London and snow, name a more iconic pair.

If you like short stories, Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote absolute top shelf ones.

Yeah Call of the Wild is another great but if you have never read The Iron Heel

It's probably time to do so. It's what inspired Orwell to write 1984 and it is a fucking oracle in it's predicting the world today

[-] Maiq@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Don't think I've read it since but i seem to remember the dog leaving for a camp he knew of, hopefully with better kinder people.

I mostly remember it was an example used for man vs nature and man vs himself if I remember right. Been 30+ years.

I used to subscribe to this ideology. Now, I almost can’t wait.

Remember Man as you go by
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so shall you be,
Prepare yourself to follow me

Guidelines & Community Rules

In addition to the general rules of lemmy.world:

Published Poetry

1a: Poetry posts should include the title and the author, when the author is known.

O.C. Poetry

2a: Sharing original poetry is encouraged, but it must be preceded by the tag "[OC]."

2b: If an [OC] post is requesting feedback, it should also follow with the "[FB]" tag. It would look like the following example:
[OC] [FB] Nothing Gold Can Stay

Feedback

All feedback should be given in good faith.

3a: All [FB] requests should be met with comments constructive in nature. It is okay to dislike parts of a poem, but make sure to explain why you feel that way.

3b: Feedback does not need to be extraordinary in nature. Simply expressing how a work makes you feel is often enough.

3c: Use the honor system. When you receive good feedback, return it in kind to another author. Everyone appreciates knowing their work is being read and appreciated.

As this community develops, these guidelines may be adjusted.

Formatting Help
Work in progress

To create a line break, use two spaces at the end of a line.

To create empty space, type  . Use four of these at the beginning of a line to create a standard indent.

UPDATE:
Some methods of access do not format markdown correctly. I am currently testing various apps and web interfaces to see what does and does not retain formatting.

In the interim, it is encouraged to post text poetry as you normally would, but to include a link at the beginning or end of the post with access to a website or image that retains the formatting as intended.
