DIY rule (lemmy.nz)

I fucking hate gatekeeping gender-affirming care by anyone. And it saddens me that it's not that widely available and easy to get, so so many people have no other choice but to DIY. I have nothing but respect for those that do...
And I have only the utmost respect for DIY providers. Y'all are my heroes. Keep being amazing 💜

One day...I swear to god I'll open my own hormone lab. One day for sure...not even for the money, but trans people need their 'mones. What's so wrong about that?

I maintain that denying trans folks HRT/GAC is like refusing insulin for a diabetic. It’s long established science at this point and not acknowledging that is intentional cruelty

[-] ShadowOfMiisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 36 points 4 days ago

Intentional and for some reason politicized cruelty. I agree.

Is that the freedom everyone is talking about? The "my body my choice" anti-vaxxers are talking about?

[-] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 37 points 4 days ago

They believe in "my body, my choice", but they also believe in "your body, my choice." Obviously, the one making all the decisions should be some random fucknut who thinks science is elitist.

[-] GalacticSushi@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 days ago

Similar to how they believe in your freedom to free speech and expression that they agree with and the freedom to practice their particular flavor of Christianity?

I think they shut down their operations, but they had a good thing going for a while. One of the coolest things they had was their business card:

In 2022, Four Thieves released detailed instructions for re-compounding the abortion drug misoprostol so that it could be delivered on paper rather than in pills, and subsequently distributed business cards at a hacker convention in Queens, New York. The cards were labeled "This Card is an Abortion" and each one had three doses of misoprostol embedded in it.

Conservatives are pure evil. Disown them. It is immoral to maintain a relationship with a conservative.

healthcare saves lives!

in other news, the sky is blue and transphobes are horrible people

your parents can only "gatekeep" that if youre underage.... and personally, i believe this is fair, since there is always the possibility of misdiagnosis or confusion (at underage, the human brain is not fully developed yet to fully grasp the longterm consequences). just a reminder that your parents care about you and have your best interests at heart.

Denying a trans kid HRT is child abuse.

Lol. Lmao, even.

Your parents may have cared about you and your best interests, but I can assure you that's not the case for many of us. Your anecdote is reflective of your experience, and assuming we were all so lucky is a pretty privileged position to take.

[-] starsoaked_lily@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 days ago

if every parent truly cared about their children and truly had their best interests at heart we would live in a much better world

congrats on your childhood, i guess?

Sure, you're allowed to think what you want, but I disagree with you.

Misdiagnoses are really rare. I'm not saying they can't happen, but they are definitely not common. I'm citing my own endo here, who's known as "the best" in my country who's worked with countless trans people, including those that are underage.

Sure, the human brain may not be fully developed at that age, but trans kids usually understand really freaking well what the effects of the wrong puberty entail. And they can certainly feel them, on their own bodies.

I think that the alternative, letting the wrong puberty run its course and risk severe suicidal ideation and lifelong self-image issues is much worse than not addressing the issue, citing "misdiagnoses" as the reason. I believe that there should be a thorough explanation of all the effects of both puberties before doing anything.
And also, puberty blockers exist for those that are unsure, to give them more time.

just a reminder that your parents care about you and have your best interests at heart

Can't speak for other people, but...
Did my mother really have my best interests at heart, when endlessly repeating stuff like "I don't wanna see your ugly face anymore, I can't stand to look at it" throughout my entire childhood? Maybe. Who knows?
All I know is that now I have cripplingly low self-esteem and I'm severely insecure about every aspect of my appearance.

Again, you're allowed to have an opinion of your own ofc. It's just that I (hopefully) respectfully disagree with you.

I think that the alternative, letting the wrong puberty run its course and risk severe suicidal ideation and lifelong self-image issues is much worse than not addressing the issue, citing “misdiagnoses” as the reason.

Christian-supremacist social authoritarians are the ones pushing transphobia in the US and elsewhere, and they always like to bring up the "what if the kids are just going through a phase and make a wrong choice and regret it later..." angle. It's a bad-faith argument because they fundamentally do not believe it is ever possible for being transgender and transitioning to be the correct choice. For anyone, ever.

Their position is that all trans people are wrong and crazy and sick, and need to be saved by Jesus to come back to the truth that they are actually cisgender like everybody else in the world. Because they deny the existence of trangender people as a real thing, it's something made up by Satanic perverts and cultural Marxists. Ideally kids never even find out trans is even a thing, because it would be illegal to talk about it. Failing that, they need to be psychologically tortured at a pray-the-gay-away conversion camp. If they still can't be made normal, they need to be disowned and discarded; the woke mind virus got them.

You can chart up the statistics, here's how many adults regret trying to transition as a teen, versus here's how many adults regret not being allowed to transition sooner. Doesn't matter. None of the people in the latter column "count". It's similar to trying to show how few instances of voter fraud there are vs. how many people are disenfranchised by voter ID laws. They don't really care about the research, the logic, the fairness, the math. They care that their side is the only right one and that the only people being hurt are the others.

Also I believe conservative men want for transfem kids in particular to go through the 'wrong' puberty because it makes them easier to spot. The majority of their own sexual experiences are one-night hookups with drunk strangers. So they fear accidentally mistaking one for a "real woman", because if they did that would make them gay. No, they want trans women to stay as a PornHub category where they belong.

They care more about that than teens killing themselves, because that's just what being a right-winger is. The absolute selfishness is as core to conservative identity as the bigotry.

Yep. That pretty much sums it up for me...

That part with conservative men tho...holy fucking shit. That's true and terrifying, because it's true. All of it.

This world is fucked up, honestly. I hate it a bit more every day. Still...I'm naively hoping things will somehow get better someday?

Anyway, thanks for the comment 💜
Brutal yet on point.

My partner's parents beat her and exploited her for labor and said she couldn't transition because she was "an extension of her father in the same way as a limb". But sure her parents cared and had her best interests at heart /s

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
