I finished the book a couple weeks before the movie came out and didn't know it was made into a movie until I looked for a book review and saw a movie review.

Saw the movie. It wasn't the train wreck that the reviews made me anticipate, but it wasn't great. They made some very strange changes from the book, and most of those didn't work well.

I am an active movie goer, but I purpusfully avoided this one, because from the trailer, it kinda seemed like it was like an ad that tried to normalize having AI "friends".

That is probably not accurate and fair, I don't know, but the movie seemed kind of uninteresting.

I've seen enough good movies about relationships with robots, and it didn't seem like this movie was bringing nothing new to the table.

I mentioned this movie to my wife when seeing all the articles trashing it's opening failure. She's squarely in the target demographic. She'd never heard of the movie (and neither had I) before despite going to the theatre for all kinds of movies recently.

If you can't find your target audience when they're actively going to movies that says something about the marketing I think.

The article mentioned the Drew Barrymore Show as an example of the marketing, they've only got like 3 million viewers at absolute peak from what I see and the only person I've ever heard mention it in regular conversation is a die hard conservative, not the kind of person who will show up for a movie about an empathetic robot.

I cried three times during the movie in which Ortega stars as the title character, a later-edition artificial robot. After wallowing unbought with her fellow robots in a gloomy city storefront, Klara is finally purchased by a sickly young girl, Josie (Mia Tharia), and her dominant mother, Chrissy (Amy Adams). The plan is for Klara to bring joy to Josie while looking out for her safety. They live in a bright sunny country home surrounded by golden wheat where Klara finds her footing in the real world; She is continually energized, bedazzled and worshiping the sun. Along the way, Chrissy comes to blows with Klara, but then learns the robot is the best thing in her daughter’s life. There’s also a bit of a twist in this emotional dystopian feature about how precious life can be.

idk maybe because it sounds bland as fuck?

Read the book. It was okay. Heard nothing about this movie.

I do feel like advertising is kind of self sabotaging though. Ads are so invasive and aggressive that I make heavy use of ad blockers.

TW trying to inject too much humor into his movies is how.
