Reddit got super gross really quickly

[-] MJHill@piefed.world 18 points 1 day ago

More enshittification of what was once one of the best sites on the innertubes. I have been a member for 14 years after a few years of just lurking. Got permanently banned a couple of weeks ago for Dog knows what! Thought about appealing for 10 seconds and realized they did me a favor. The IPO was their fucking downfall. Good riddance to the bot farm.

There are many subs that are downright unusable now. Some are so insanely rightwing I don't know if this is actually what society is like or whether these are all bots stirring shit up and masturbating each other

By design. It’s to increase engagement and promote propaganda.

Users: Bring back r/all and 3rd party apps!

reddit "leadership": Sorry, best we can do is a new dumpster fire of a feed that everybody hates.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago

Still they needed to do was roll back to 2010 Reddit and they'd be good again. But that's ok, we have Lemmy now. Let Reddit rot.

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

We have the Fediverse now, Lemmy is only part of it. That said, I'd rather have the Fediverse than any version of reddit if I had to choose.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I still don't fully understand the fediverse thing, but I'm on here so I guess that's a start lol

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago

Basically, it's just websites that can talk to each other.

It's like email, where you can send messages between yahoo and google, except that concept for social media networks.

Federation is just the idea that different systems communicate and share using a common protocol.

Email is federated, i.e. emails have a specification to how they can be sent. The fediverse uses activitypub, which allows for sharing of content between servers.

🤯

This actually makes so much sense now.

[-] hal_baleigh@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

Don't worry they'll just add more bots to fake upvotes and engagement.

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

As far as I can tell, they're way ahead of you!

Slow walking the transformation of a discussion forum into a propaganda machine...

[-] DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

They got rid of r/all, then ruined the rest of the sort algorithms, now it's just "Popular", "News", and "Latest" and it's just ass, old posts, tons of reposts, almost no local/state/country subs, just horrible compared to how the site used to work.

Also the timing of killing r/all right before the midterms is pretty interesting, all these tech bro fuckers are trying to control and manipulate the world and nobody is doing anything about it.

[-] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 14 points 2 days ago

Maybe its not a lot but i thought we here where doing at least something by moving to a decentralised platform?

Who is even supposed to be the knight to kill the tech industry dragon? Our leaders love the dragon.

[-] DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's insane watching all these layoffs happening and thinking "well if this happened in the early 90's or early 2000's surely someone would spin up a new business to compete with their old company" but who has the money? What if President dickhead and his merry band of racist pieces of shit won't let them have a business license or other things they need? People are straight up being iced out of our upward mobility while corruption and nepotism are taking over.

All in all it leads me to feel like the only people who are going to save us from them is someone choosing decisive actions, and sooner than later, but then what? Because there will be major fallout.

Hopefully Brazil and other nations impacted bring some of this to heel, but most likely Big Tech will ignore them until there's a change in leadership in the US, one that will hold them accountable, but we'll see if we fumble the midterms.

[-] Stormy@thelemmy.club 8 points 2 days ago

Even if we don't fumble midterms Trump said he was going to set fire on shit if they lose, so it's not like it's going to be just fine then.

I'm glad someone else is paying attention, I don't know how we on the Left haven't gotten plans together for their next Jan 6 like attempt, or far worse.

I swear everyday is like living in the flashbacks leading up to the formation of the Republic of Gilead in the Handmaid's Tale show, and as a dad and grandfather to a whole bunch of daughters and granddaughters it's really worrisome, especially since I'm no longer the able-bodied man I used to be.

[-] Stormy@thelemmy.club 4 points 2 days ago

I have my plans together.

Talk to your friends, tell them they're pos if they still like the pedophile, you're a old man they'll listen to you. Not me or any other woman.

[-] DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I've already excised all the MAGAs I comfortably can from my life, my oldest son and his wife are deep in the cult, my oldest daughter is engaged to one, and my father is one, outside of our future son-in-law we don't really engage the others too much, my son's wife got into a Facebook fight with my mother-in-law and we've apparently been dead to them ever since, and my dad lives states away from me and his vote is meaningless anyway, he lives in a deep blue area. I keep the peace with my old man for my lil brother and step-mom's sake, but we usually have screaming matches when we get on the phone together, super not fun, but get along perfectly in person, because he suddenly remembers I'm not a 14 yr old boy anymore.

Outside of my daughter-in-law and her family, at least the few MAGAs still in my orbit are super quiet about it to the point where we still question it, my daughter in-law and her family are nuts about it though, scarily so. At this point we're mostly trying to hang in there to protect and be there for the grandkids.

Aaron Swartz must be rolling in his grave.

[-] hal_baleigh@piefed.social 9 points 2 days ago

Yup that's what made me leave.

[-] Yew@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

If I hadn't left already, this would have been non-negotiable. Even twitter allows you to only see posts by the people you follow.
