Valve created a great online store front, they have also made sure other storefronts can't rise through monopolistic practices.
Tim is full of shit.
Valve created a great online store front, they have also made sure other storefronts can't rise through monopolistic practices.
Tim is full of shit.
The only thing, between the two (Valve and Epic), that has held gaming back, were those stupid Epic exclusives. Fuck them.
Yeah all that open source and open hardware options I have are really holding things back.
Fuck off you tool.
I'd rather never play a game again than use the Epic client even once, so I'm not sure you are correct there, Timmy.
Projecting are we?
Ohh, so it's NOT all the paid exclusives that held gaming back? Fuck off Tim.
I claim Tim Sweeny is a little bitch. See how easy that is.
Let us point at him and laugh, again!

Sweeny is the Trump of gaming
Talks nothing but shit and has more power than he should while being little more than a bad joke? Yeah, that tracks.
Well, Steam was the reason I had no qualms swapping Windows for Linux. After that I discovered Indie games in the Applications Manager and grew a renewed interest in finding little gems of games, new and old. I can even play games with friends who still use Windows without problems. So for me, Steam enriched gaming. Oh yeah, last week I deleted my Epic Games account with I don't know how many games I acquired for free over the years, because quality beats quantity. There may have been some good games in there, but I don't want to drag a scrapyard with me just because somewhere in there may be a nice snack. Also I would have to install an AI-slop app to start it. That's a nah for me. Goodbye Tim.
My own ease at migrating to Linux as a PC gamer was almost entirely due to the Steam platform but I have had much less success with my GoG collection so I am still holding out for the Linux based platform that they have teased as in-work for a while now.
Epic games' freebies were something that I would regularly pick up but I honestly haven't felt any desire to try and access or install any of them since I moved from Win10. Ultimately, I am just hoping that accepting the free games resulted in higher operating costs for Epic and I think I may have purchased one or two heavily discounted games in 5 years. Hopefully I can be forgiven for those past indiscretions.
Steam isn't perfect but I will support it 100% over that other option since I think Valve has done more to improve the compatility and accessibility to high quality games on Linux than anyone else. Sweeney and other pricks like him can keep whining all they want; not gonna even play the tiniest violin for him.
I remember spending a week in 2008ish getting TF2 running on Fedora. It was terrible but it mostly worked.
Now, thanks to Valve and twenty ish years of continuing development and support of Linux gaming, my kids can play practically any game on Linux out of the box.
They've earned a mountain of respect from me for that.
With every passing day it looks more and more like he's just an undercover Valve agent doing absolutely everything in his power to push as many people as possible away from Steam's competitors...
Oh yes, let's all listen to the man that said if a game is to be successful it must launch on their competitors platform, Steam.
Sour grapes at the people rejecting the ai?
The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn't even be hard.
Lol. So do it Timmy.
From the people that took two years to implement a shopping cart. The same people that are so incompetent they had to resort to vibe coding their Linux client.
Not just the Linux client, but the new Windows one too and in their own words "Coding is hard so we vibe coded" (literally word for word).
AnYONe COUld Do iT

and it wouldn't even be hard.
Then who said this, Timmy? The LLM you used to do your press releases?
Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher
Wow is this an actual quote? This guy is hella toxic.
His company released the very best client AI tokens could buy. (Its not great.)
The funniest thing about the recent Epic nonsense is that Steam will most likely choose to not validate this by making any statements, and still gain from this without lifting a finger.
Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.
Stop giving this sad twat any attention.
Every accusation is a confession with guys like him.
Waaa, I wanna be Valve! ๐ญ๐ผ
He just wants the customer base of Valve and then use the "monopoly" to generate lots and lots of shareholder value. It would be an Epic shitshow.
It's always been an Epic shitshow, just like this dehydrated shart.
Valve has a good reputation amongst gamers and Epic has a bad reputation amongst gamers. Why is that, Tim?
The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn't even be hard. I only bring it up because it's what everyone talks about when defending Steam. Like it's still 2024 and these things are hard. Steam's only remaining value is its network.
No sir. Trust. Steam has earned trust from their customers. THAT is what the 30% cut pays for. Trust that we wont get scammed. Trust that it "just works". Trust that the service provider keeps our interests in mind when making decisions, not just the shareholders. Trust that Valve is in it for the long haul and our library purchases won't just poof on us. That doesn't mean there isn't risk, but there is trust. I can't say the same for Epic.
I mean, Timmy's got our trust, let's be fair.
The entirety of the world's video gaming population trusts him to continue being a weeping zit every single day of his useless life. โ๐ผ
This has been an absolutely wonderful crashout so far, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
You know after PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds moved from being an Arma mod to a standalone game using the Unreal engine... Their developers at Unreal worked closely with PUBG to modify the engine during the Battle Royale craze a few years ago. Epic took those engine changes that PUBG was basically funding and this led to creating Fortnite. Now that Epic had a copycat battle royale game, they needed a game store, and created the Epic Games Store to compete with Steam. The goal was to have a distribution channel for other games built on the Unreal engine. The new Epic Games Store cut for developers was 12% instead of 30% from Steam. But there was a hidden cost in that the engine itself required a license fee, somewhere between 5 and 10% of the revenue. So really, he is just mad that after all these years, Steam is still in the lead and the Epic Games Store would charge close to 30% (if it could)...
You gotta raise the rents Tim. You gotta stop letting Valve live rent free in your head. At this point you're just giving them free press and good free press at that.
Also, Fuck you, Tim.
Yeah, by not releasing HL3. Bastards!

I don't think so Tim.
Oh alright, I'll install steam again and buy a few games.
See what happens Weeney? That's what you get for being such a whiney little lying bitch.
Jesus, is Sweeney undergoing some form of AI psychosis? Or is he just generally unhinged?
"Valve has held gaming back for years by locking developers' PC games into Steamworks' social walled garden where players can't talk to other players on iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or even other PC stores."
my guy lemmy, matrix, reddit, discord, forums and even your local library game night exists. You simply cannot be such a simpleton.
That and what he said is untrue as hell. Steam games can communicate with other platforms. Sf6, sf5, baldurs gate, divinity original sins, pso2, killer instinct, ... And the list goes on and on
lol
This guy is such a loser. I will never spend a dime in the epic store
