RIP. I hope he got to see everything.

A great actor, and a decent human. Rest peacefully Captain. You've earned it.

I always feared Sir Ian McKellen would be the first of the two to leave us.

[-] cogman@lemmy.world 90 points 9 hours ago

I can't believe William shatner outlived him.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 14 points 7 hours ago

And at least the last time I saw him, seemed to be doing amazingly well

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 13 points 8 hours ago

he cheated by using that space ribbon time heaven thing.

[-] negativenull@piefed.world 36 points 9 hours ago

That was exactly my first thought.

[-] maya_s_trojan@piefed.blahaj.zone 15 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Well as if it wasn't enough bad news already! Shatner is still alive! /s

Many of my favourite moments in all of media are of this, out of place, British/French/Space man, speaking softly and at length about morality and the human experience. He still continues to give me hope that Humanity can eventually surpass the greed, hate and fear that hold us all down. Hopefully, we can see a glimpse of it in our lifetime.

Let's see what's out there.

:(

Of all the celebrity deaths, I think this one I feel the most. I won't say I'm sad, Patrick Stewart lived an awesome life, and I'm glad to hear he didn't have to battle Alzheimers or Lewy body Dementia for a long time.

RIP to an amazing actor who played amazing roles, and who lived a full life that we should all strive for.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 11 points 7 hours ago

Lewy Body Dementia is what Robin Williams had, and why he killed himself. It's vicious.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 hours ago

From the statement it sounds like it wasn't a long battle with it, which if true would be for the best.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

That was my first thought as well. You're right, I think the statement said something like "a brief and poignant battle" and honestly the briefer the better.

[-] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago

I think he went out on his own terms. Logically highly likely.....he wasn't ill for long, it doesn't usually work that way with dementia. Poignant is an interesting word to use describing his battle.

I'm not usually one to get emotional about celebrities but this one sucks. RIP legend.

[-] ArtVandelay@lemmy.world 28 points 9 hours ago

May his tombstone be forever illuminated by exactly four lights.

I'm so glad we got one last go around with Picard in Season 3 while he was still here. I was just watching Unification: Part I last night and enjoying this scene:

B'iJik: How would it benefit the Klingon Empire? I'm sure Gowron will ask.
Picard: The only benefit to the Klingon Empire would be our gratitude.
B'iJik: That is what you want me to tell him?
Picard: Yes. And please add that, if he is unable to provide us with a ship, then I am sure there are others in the Klingon Empire who would be willing to help me. And then... they would have our gratitude.
B'iJik: [long pause] I see.
Picard: Also, please tell Gowron that I am immensely gratified that he is prospering so well. A tribute to his skilled leadership.

The scene were he was speaking to Sarek as he wasted away on his deathbed hits differently now, too.

[-] Majoran@feddit.org 22 points 9 hours ago

Goddamn. I am just working on my first academia teaching assignment: A cultural study of the influence of TNG where I introduce the series to fresh Gen-Z'er. Suddenly, my academia sociobabble sounds kinda misplaced.

[-] gnufuu@lemmy.ca 24 points 9 hours ago

Fuuuuck I'm not ready for this

[-] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 19 points 9 hours ago

It's always a hard thing to deal with the death of someone you care for. It's a weird thing to feel so much sorrow for someone you never knew.

But here I am crying because I really loved him and he will never know how much his art has meant to me.

Sad days

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 22 points 9 hours ago

My favorite thing he's done was dressing down James Corden in front of a live mic. Captain, my captain, forever.

Sorry to see him go, but I'm happy we got to see him, and the others, once again in Picard.
