CAPT Picard is everything that leadership is supposed to be. Rest in power Jean Luc.
nothing ? he was an actor on a few tv shows, he seem'd a nice guy but then so is my neighbour.
I guess I find it a little depressing that there's any reverence for actors, they are... acting. The local plumber, nurse etal do more good in the workd.
Jonas Salk however, mucho respecto.
Honestly, I don't really know. He was a celebrity, not my friend.
I loved quite a lot of the things he started in. TNG is a significant part of my childhood. Outside of acting, he seemed like a class act.
But I never knew the guy. His death brings me sadness, but I don't think I'm in mourning. Not for him at least. His death just feels like another piece of the world I was born into going away.
I think his character on star trek is what got me into the show, I think he did such a great job and made the show immersive. I had a pretty abusive childhood, that show was all I had. Its responsible a lot of my views and morals, extremely formative. Outside of his acting, he seems like a he was a wonderful person and the world is less bright without him.
He represents a central figure in media mythology that everybody knows stands for integrity, earnestly trying to do what you think is right, and hope for a better future. Because if we can dream of making it to the stars, people will keep dreaming of making it to the stars.
Star Trek is culturally centralized as a pillar of hope and wonder that everybody can reference. If you know somebody likes Star Trek, you can basically know that they're a good person. And Patrick Stewart is the figurehead and father figure we all know, strive to be, and hold as the gold standard of.
His character's words were written by writers, sure. But, CULTURALLY, we all collectively know that he represents that hope and wisdom.
It's odd and impossibly human how something so incredibly real can come from all of our dreams when they're put together.
And while I know that his passing isn't the loss of that message of hope by any means... But I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel that way. It really does feel like it's our duty to ourselves to continue the hope that we know and feel, even if, right now, it feels a million miles away and fading.
Sir Patrick Stewart didn't die. He's become more powerful than any of us can possibly imagine.
Well said, but at the end it kind of felt like you were crossing genres. Like when Piccard had that light saber fight with the sith lord.
If you know somebody likes Star Trek, you can basically know that they’re a good person.
Idk if I'd go that far. I know some real cunts that like Star Trek
That was a great read, thank you and I totally agree.
His character as Picard is one of the clearest role models of leadership, something I want to aspire to.
Him and Optimus Prime are two examples I always think of from growing up with them. It's been a rough year.
When I've had jobs managing people in the past, I try to think of what Picard would do.
Username checks out 😄
My family calls TNG Competency Porn the best people doing their best and looking damn good doing it.
guy on TV
there are four lights!
Man gave a stellar performance and taught me to speak my truth even if any and all are trying to mess with you
Also, so sad we've never got to see him play Spider Jerusalem in an adaptation of Transmetropolitan. He wrote one of the forewords in the TB, and really would have loved to do the role.
RIP . Captain
One line from Prof Xavier in Xmen means a lot to me.
"Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, it doesn't mean they're lost forever. Sometimes, we all need a little help."
I used to go to sleep listening to the furnace and pretending it was the hum of the Enterprise with Patrick Stewart at the helm. I was safe because he was there. I'm in my fifties now and still that sometimes helps me get to sleep.
His passing is like a gut punch. My stomach is in a knot and my eyes are all welled up.
RIP Patrick - you will be missed.
Picard thought me more about morals and ethics than any of my teachers. RIP buddy
This. A man to aspire to be. He wasn't some sort of magical super hero, he was real.
Exploration. Morality. Intelligence. Dignity. Honor. Confidence. Empathy. Curiosity. Dedication.
In a lot of very real ways, I realize that I have, for a long time, considered Stewart’s portrayal of Picard to essentially be the reference standard of what outstanding leadership can and should be.
Also, as to Stewart himself: I’ve always thought he was, at his core, a genuinely good human.
Fuck, man, I haven’t felt this heartbroken about a celebrity death since Anthony Bourdain.

Same. I normally don’t particularly care that much about celebrity deaths. I mean, it’s sad in a lot of cases, but it doesn’t usually well my eyes. But when I found out about Patrick, I felt a huge gut punch. The last time I felt this was Robin Williams :( they were both good people who did not deserve dementia :(
Paul walker for me. But same deal.
Agh. Fuck. Yeah; Williams was a huge loss as well 😢
Sir Patreck Stuart
You misspelled Patrick Stewart on the title, btw.
(Also Patrick Stuart is a completely different actor)
I don't know if you knew, but Patrick Stewart was also raised in an abusive home, and used acting as a way of escaping.
I'll always remember the scene from Extras with Ricky Gervais. Sure, he was an amazing actor, but it showed how effortlessly he could turn his hand to sublime comedy.
I had no idea, thank you! And I'll look that up.
I didn't know either. But you and your wife are two of my favorite Lemmy stars. ❤️
[off topic]
I once heard Jean Claude Van Damme say that he was always tried to be kind and respectful to fans, no matter how tired or annoyed he was, because there were people who'd been looking up to him all their lives.
There are a lot of people who have looked up to Picard for all their lives.
I have so much respect for actors like this.
Reason I joined the military, got out and continue public service. He was a voice for me as a call to action. Be the change you want to see in the world. He will be deeply missed.
So he sucks got it
Was he the reason you joined a heinous institution to kill poor, innocent brown/black people around the world in the name of billionaires?
Are you this brainwashed to think you made a difference? No, you were just fighting for greedy fascists.
Nothing, I never met the guy. but he always seemed kinda cool for an old man
I was raised in an abusive home
As was he. He gave to/worked for organizations that fight domestic violence as a result.
Thank you! I had no idea. ❤️
Oh no, this is how I find out? 😢
Patrick Stuart as Picard gave me some of my favourite moments in all of media. This out of place, British/French/Space man, speaking softly and at length about morality and the human experience. Showing us that diplomacy is about conversation, rather than yelling, posturing and finger pointing. He still continues to give me hope that Humanity can eventually surpass the greed, hate and fear that hold us all down. Hopefully, we can see a glimpse of it in our lifetime.
If you haven't, give Star Trek, especially TNG a go. It's messages are still relevant today... Just don't start with season 1. "Measure of a Man" was what made me fall in love with Star Trek and Picard as a character. In fact, I'm going to watch it right now.
Before he was Starfleet, he was a Paul Atreides’ mentor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurney_Halleck

An overlooked role!
Long live duke LETO!
He was Picard and even more than Picard.
Between the lines he delivered as Jean-Luc Picard and Professor X - even if they were written by someone else - they shaped my worldview.
The perspectives he spoke in my formative years on the human condition and being a singular representation of true leadership are hallmark examples that I strive for. I know he was acting - it doesn't matter, it's aspirational.
His love for life, all life; transcended the screen, as evidenced by his hijinks in recent memory with another anointed knight - Sir Ian McKellen.
We are richer for knowing him and poorer for having lost him...
One of my first super hero movies I watched was X-men 2. (Classmate gave me a illegal recording of that and Transformers.)
I used to complain that super hero fatigue was real, Ive been watching them since age ~7 , and now I'm 27. I've seen enough super heroes. But now I will buy a ticket to doomsday to see Stewart one last time
