Was renting a shithole as a single once.
Actually it was kinda cool, because it was so shit.

But the landlord used to put his letters just inside my apartment, because he had the key.

Told him, that I'll sue him, if he enters my apartment once more without me being home.

He was actually surprised, that this is a problem, because he "doesn't care or judge about how I live"

This is a felony here. No, if you rented it out it's not "yours" yours for that time.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 23 hours ago

What if I had it written in the contract that I'm allowed to watch you fuck whenever I want?

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 12 hours ago

Check your lease, man, because you're living in Fuck City.

Contract in conflict with the law makes the contract invalid. US are weird there.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Since when is it against the law to watch people who consented to being watched? Shit, if you're Palantir or Flock you can watch people without consent and it's A-OK.

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Sure you can consent. But you can't make a legally binding contract (quickly goes into slavery territory). And that would be two contracts anyway; i forgot how it was called (separation of concerns basically) but it's limited what you can bundle into one signature.

[-] SouthernShao@lemmus.org -1 points 18 hours ago

Which makes the law immoral.

What do you mean, why? What is moral is fundamentally just what isn't immoral and what is immoral are just those actions we shouldn't take. The only way to know that and not have that be entirely arbitrary is to utilize logic. Logic would mandate that since you would not desire the violation of your will, you cannot choose to violate the will of another.

But all human conflict creates will violation, so this means you just need to decide which will is actually initiating the violation of the other will and then side with the individual who's will is being violated by the other's.

For example, let's say you own a car. It is your will to own that car (hold exclusive authority over it) and for me not to take it from you. If it is my will to also hold exclusive authority over that car I will need to take it from you. If I try to do this, my will is such that it desires the violation of your will which already existed prior to my desire to rob you.

This is actually what murder, rape, theft, fraud, etc. all are. Rape for example is only rape when there's no consent. In order for the idea of rape to be made manifest, at least one "participant" must have not desired to be violated in such ways while another's will must have been made manifest after the fact to do the violating. If this does not occur than the output is simply a consensual sexual act.

The same goes here. If a landlord asks you to consent to an idea where they can enter the place you rent anytime they like and watch you under any circumstances, then he isn't violating your will because you consented to it. If the government (which is simply a third party utilizing violence) tells either party that they cannot engage in this consent then that is just the thuggery of the state telling people how they can or cannot consent.

That's the thing, you can't bundle two entirely different principles into one contract here, that would be two contracts. Goes into coercion territory otherwise, US contracts are notorious for this btw.

[-] SouthernShao@lemmus.org -1 points 18 hours ago

If your renters signed something like that they deserve no privacy.

[-] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago

Don't forget to tip him each month!

[-] FantasmaNaCasca@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

Just the tip thou...and use protection.

[-] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Your landlord walks up to you and makes you a deal. He'll cut your rent in half...but only if you let him watch. You doin' it?

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 4 points 15 hours ago
[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Nope. Usually they’re employees and can’t make that deal.

Also, that would be a crime. (Which means you can probably leverage a settlement for better than he was offering anyways.)

[-] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

Yeah, of course. XD

[-] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 51 points 1 day ago

Remember, never refer to landlords as leeches.

Leeches have medical uses.

[-] aksdb@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

I once called my landlord a leech. But I have no idea if it ever showed up or if he even wanted it. /j

[-] rounding_error@lemmy.today 21 points 1 day ago

I called my landlord once to replace a lightbulb because I wasn’t paying for that shit

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I just send them a copy of the receipt and deduct it from my rent. That way I don’t have to see them in person

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

Mine started getting mad when we swapped to that system. If you're paying, I'm buying the good stuff. High quality air filters, 6 gigalumen bulbs, only the gayest shelf veneer. The good stuff

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

That’s why I do that :)

I had to put in a request for a new shower hose every other month for a while, because my landlord got a bulk deal on the shittiest possible hoses and even without ever adjusting the position of my shower head, they would leak to the point that my shower was unusable after less than eight hours of total use (I shower quick).

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

"ooh, an audience" tosses the covers aside

screams

"no wait come back why are you running away I'm not going to try and impale you with it"

running faster "you can have the house please oh fuck it's burnt into my brain make it stop MAKE IT STOP"

[-] borth@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
