Can someone explain to an outsider why this guy kept getting heralded as the next great Democrat leader? Every single thing I've read about him has been "Newsom deploys extra orphan crushing machines" and other nakedly Republican policies. Does he just have a huge bot farm working for him or something?

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Because he meme’d back at trump.

That’s all.

[-] dan1101@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

He's good at trash-talking Trump, that's all I see good about him.

[-] CoconutLove@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

Cause he wants it so bad and he’s been auditioning for it for awhile

[-] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

He is charismatic and good looking and not poor or middle class, he makes richer, older people (ie. voters) feel good about themselves, and is a Democrat in California.

None of those things are indicators of any kind of ethics or morality, but are all you need to become a politician.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 26 points 3 days ago

Fuck this guy.

If he joined Trumps cabinet tomorrow I would not be surprised in the least.

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

He is at the head of the Donorcrat party, because that lets him have a sustainable career. The Turdpublicans are the roman candle of conservative politics, burning brightly and burnt out swiftly.

He basically wants to do this for the rest of his life:

he's really cashing out at the end of his career isnt he. What a traitorous arsehole. People like him are why the democratic party is on the rocks.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 31 points 3 days ago

He may call himself a democrat but he's a republican on the inside.

[-] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

As are most of them these days.

It's not the end. I'd eat a random street hat if he doesn't run for president. Pretty sure ego and ambition are secreted from his scalp and create his natural hair gel.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

Yep. I'm prepared to fight like hell in the primary, if we get one, to make sure he doesn't make it on the ballot. If we don't topple establishment leadership at the DNC this election though, they will force Newsom through regardless of what the primary shows, like with Bernie. The bigger fight is now.

[-] epicurean_toast@lemmus.org 3 points 2 days ago

Who would you like to see as the candidate in 2028? A lot of people like AOC but I'm not sure she runs in '28.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I think it's too soon for her, I think she should take Chuck's Senate seat first, then run later. I don't know who, I feel like you can't trust anybody these days. If no one better is nominatted, she might have to run now, rather than later.

Kimberly Guilfoyle’s ex is a piece of shit too? Surprised it didn’t work out between them.

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I wish he was at the end of his career, but establishment shitheads keep pushing him like the reactionaries they are

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

He’s been a sleeve ball his whole career. Fucking that guy

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 46 points 3 days ago

I'm never fucking voting for this man. Look at me neolibs, never. If you want to lose the next election pick this fucker. It'll be your fucking choice.

[-] nullspace@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago

He really doesn't give a shit about pretending anymore. He knows his patrons have already financed his DNC nomination.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

sadly he was the only choice in cali or a republican. and there will be another corporate stooge becoming the governer again.

[-] Rusticus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Just another corpo cuck who grandstands about "the good fight" or whatever on socials

[-] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So, he basically signs a bunch of new laws protecting private data, but because he did not sign one particular proposition, evil incarnate? People realize that this "vetoed" law is not one that existed, but a proposition for a law ... right? You should still have control of how your data is shared.

It's not ideal, but seriously, man it's so easy to make people on Lemmy shoot themselves on the foot. People here will jump at anything to demonize if you even think of voting against Trump here even though he clearly is literally open corruption and the complete corrosion of the rule of law. Anything that diverts from the complete ideal is an excuse for the most corrupt administration to continue in power.

[-] freely1333@reddthat.com 2 points 2 days ago

Based on what we know currently it is unlikely he is going to be running against Trump. Though not impossible he is running against a Trump proxy/someone who will later pull some maneuvers to get Trump the presidency again. And I guess the tiniest chance Trump directly runs again.

[-] ennof@feddit.org 33 points 3 days ago

Newsom, in his veto letter to the legislature, said he was supportive of “protecting sensitive personal information of Californians,” but that a “categorical ban on sharing that information goes a step too far.”

The governor pointed to existing state laws that require businesses to give consumers the option to limit sharing their information and budget constraints that would hinder implementing and enforcing the law.

Newsom also signed a handful of other bills strengthening the state’s privacy rules:

  • SB 923 expands the scope of the California Consumer Privacy Act to require businesses to delete all personal information they have on a consumer upon request, not just data collected directly from the consumer. Online-only businesses will be required to provide a webform or portal for deletion requests.
  • AB 883 shortens the time with which data brokers must comply with a data deletion request from 45 to 30 days. It requires elected officials and judges receive information on how to access the deletion mechanism, known as DROP, to protect their information.

Other data privacy laws still awaiting Newsom’s signature or veto include:

  • SB 690 would remove the private right to action for alleged violations under a wiretapping law, allowing just the state attorney general to pursue such legal challenges.
  • AB 2561 would prohibit an operating system or application from re-adjusting a user’s privacy setting without consent.
[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 31 points 3 days ago

So they now must delete data when requested. Except if they SOLD THAT DATA then it can’t be deleted because it’s already out there. 30 days is fucking plenty of time.

Fucking slimey piece of shit.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 3 days ago

but that a “categorical ban on sharing that information goes a step too far.”

Why?
