What's terrible is that the tech industry is constantly engineering for planned failure. Nothing ever just lasts the way it should. People literally think it makes sense to buy a new phone every 2 years when that's actually bat shit crazy. There isn't any RGB, folding ass gimmick that takes away from that fact. They make it an issue because they can't just come out with what will essentially be peak for modern PC. Capitalism ruins everything.

I took all the ram out of my computer and now it won't turn on. How do i get to ai now?

Fuckin moron.

[-] innermachine@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

"These resources make me money, so only I should have them". This is like clowning on people for owning their music instead of streaming it, or growing their food instead of going to a super Walmart.

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

How bout we ram his dumb head up his dumb ass?

[-] dasrael@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 day ago

Quite terrible to have all that wealth in the hands of so few. We should distribute that more evenly to raise the quality of living for more.

[-] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 30 points 1 day ago

Big talk for someone who can't get the funding for their insane spending anymore.

[-] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 57 points 1 day ago

It’s quite terrible for Sam Altman to have a head, and yet.

[-] j4yc33@piefed.social 41 points 1 day ago

I have a combined somewhere around 512GiB DRAM. I am glad to know it pisses Altmann Off.

To answers the obvious: Homelab.

[-] trk@aussie.zone 7 points 1 day ago

I have 512GB of ECC in one server, 64GB of DDR5 in my desktop, and probably another couple of hundred GB or so of DDR4 from previous desktops in a box on my shelf.

Starting to worry about a home invasion by one of the AI companies.

[-] Eheran@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Why not sell that?

[-] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I've got at least 256 in sticks lying around. Maybe another 128 or so in SBCs and laptops with soldered ram.

[-] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 21 points 1 day ago

I have a combined somewhere around 512GiB DRAM

aka your savings for retirement.

[-] SpaghettiMaster@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

It will be worth its weight in gold or in steel, depends how the markets go.

[-] stefenauris@pawb.social 161 points 2 days ago

At this point I think CEOs are just trying to rage bait us

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 66 points 2 days ago

The more we talk about AI the more he stays relevant, the longer he can prop up his stock price.

[-] dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 days ago

No it's the money that keeps them relevant, not us talking about it.

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago

You would be shocked at how many people just buy stocks because they heard about Thing.

Also the stock market is completely made up.

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 21 points 2 days ago

To be clear I'm not demonizing us for talking about it, but that's his tactic. He says something that keeps him in the news cycle, that keeps him in the minds of investors, which keeps his valuation up, and that's the money. If he became irrelevant in the news that would mean his valuation was going down, and he'd be losing money - so yes I think him stirring the pot is to keep OpenAI relevant and talked about.

Personally, I think it's quite terrible that Sam Altman isn't currently experiencing testicular torsion.

[-] galacticbackhoe@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

"Please Luigi me" said the man with the imminently punchable face.

[-] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

Having gone through that myself as a teen,

I agree.

[-] ElChinchilla@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago

Owning shovels is bad says shovel renting company.

[-] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 2 points 23 hours ago

If by 'shovel renting company' you mean a company that rents shovels themselves - then yes.
Its crazy to me that these AI LLM companies are so overleveraged that they dont even own their own hardware

[-] jaxxed@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

Thankfully, OpenAI will barely survive 2026, and will die n 2027. We shouldn't have to hear too much more about him.

[-] stoy@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago

I have previously posted about having a set of 20cl rum bottles, each bottle being dedicated to when I no longer have to live on the same planet as particular bastards that do their best to ruin everything they touch.

I recently bought another set of 20cl rum bottles, and I am thinking of dedicating them to AI companies crashing and burning....

But I am worried, they may not crash and burn, some other person will just buy them before they die completely....

He can rent ram from me if he thinks it's so terrible, it's the best option for those who need compute after all. I'll rent a VM with 16GB of RAM to him for let's say $1000 a month. Go ahead Sam, it's the best utilization after all. For $5,000 a month you can have a part time "spot" instance with a GPU.

Oh but I don't work like Nvidia, Sam, you get the same terms we do with subscriptions. You miss one payment, one payment doesn't clear, you're cut off.

That sounds about fair for how us consumers have been treated.

Sounds like Sammy sees what way the winds are blowing, and is scared

Models are getting a lot more efficient, and the billion dollar models are going to have to compete with something basically free to run

[-] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 10 points 1 day ago

Only a moron would think OpenAI was ever turning profitable.

There were two possible ways,

  1. Subscription prices rose to a point no one would be interested to pay.

  2. Inference got so cheap, that 98% of all use cases could be run by open weight models on local machines

In both situations OpenAi and Anthropic lost.

The bull case has been a bear case since the beginning. Both companies will most likely stay alive, but will eventually have their costs turned down as they're going to be bought out by some of the mastodonts.

The best possible scenario for either of them, is if a government want a frontier lab and decides to buy one already functioning. Rather than having their universities start from scratch

Next he'll be paying off politicians to make it legal for police to come to your door and seize your RAM for 'national security'. There'll be a huge right wing media campaign, funded by the taxpayer, under the heading 'The War Against Home RAM'. People who own their own computers will be labelled 'terrorists'.

Yes. Terrible for him that I can do my own computing without having to rent it from him.

Next in breaking news: local mechanic thinks "it's quite terrible" for people to repair their own cars at home.

[-] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Manufacturers unironically believe this.

[-] SpaghettiMaster@feddit.uk 5 points 1 day ago

Some repair guys do too and I find it really annoying when they are secretive over things.

When I worked in a repair shop if a customer asked I would let them know exactly what I'm doing.

[-] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 hours ago

I've always told people what I do when fixing their computers: read the fucking screen.

Somehow they never learn.

i think it's quite terrible that so much oxygen is wasted on these mf'ers.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago

Sam Altman should be hung upside down and forced to subsidize hardware prices for everybody to offset the damage he's caused.

[-] mEEGal@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," Altman said. "You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that.

[-] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 22 points 2 days ago

deal with this very supply-constrained environment

It's only supply constrained right now because YOU are buying all it up to try and force everyone to use AI they don't need, and increasingly don't want as they realize it's pretty useless for 99% of people.
