I think Sam Altmans blood and organs would be better allocated to the sick and injured.

[-] GeirGrusom@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Guy who allegedly sexually assaulted his sister says something profoundly stupid.

[-] 011011@sopuli.xyz 18 points 1 day ago

When do we start burning these folks alive?

[-] spittingimage@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Let's not go to extremes, now.

Burning them dead would be just as good.

[-] disorderly@lemmy.world 100 points 2 days ago

I think he has a point, but doesn't reach the right conclusion. RAM is in short supply and critical to a functioning country. As such, I propose that we nationalize all data centers.

[-] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Interestingly, normies who argue against nationalization of private property tend to say "commies want to nationalize my toothbrush", etc. not understanding the difference between private property (data centers) and personal property (consumer-grade RAM, for instance).

So, funny enough, Altman is advocating for the cartoon villain version of communism where the centralized authority (Sam Altman) nationalizes your personal property (RAM).

Meanwhile, folks actually in favor of nationalization to reap the benefits of planned systems of production would not try to steal your RAM, but would take Altman's datacenters for the public good.

Having oxygen in Sam Altman’s lungs is an inefficient use of the world’s limited air.

[-] synapse1278@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Altman drinking clean water, is just a terrible use of scarce natural resources.

[-] iuseasahibtw@ani.social 12 points 1 day ago

By that logic should poor or stupid people give up their organs to the intelligent and wealthy.... Hmmmm....

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago

thats why musk has all these children, 14+organ banks.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

That's a simplification.

They are also human shields.

Sam Altman?

More like Sam Ctrlman

Where’s my Tab??

[-] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 1 day ago

Aren't they hoarding RAM in warehouses right now so their utilization is actually 0%?

[-] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

If this becomes a Tulip Bubble, i will laugh.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You mean like the Tulip Mania of the 1600s?

I hope it'll lead to similar art too 😁

A Satire of Tulip Mania by Jan Brueghel the Younger (c. 1640) depicts speculators as brainless monkeys in contemporary upper-class dress. In a commentary on the economic folly, one monkey urinates on the previously valuable plants, others appear in debtor's court and one is carried to the grave.

Don't get me wrong, having large amounts of RAM and lots of CPU muscle has made software terribly inefficient. An everyday user shouldn't have to have more than 8-16 GB and perhaps 4 cores to get by. That said, wtf are we even talking about here? The solution to too little RAM is making more or using less. Memory is a commodity, not a privilige.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

PC architecture in general is pretty shitty for RAM use. OS takes a load, browsers take a load, games seem to want RAM on the GPU backed up by RAM on your motherboard, every driver and utility comes with it's own browser just to display a few buttons.

It's been too wasteful for too long, assuming the prices would always go down so what's a gig here and there. Well now they're going up, so everyone is fucked.

i would argue that os creep is a problem. 2-4 gb should be more than enough for 99.9% of usage.

gaming, or computational demanding jobs, need more. but for the majority of people, if it wasn't for OS creep, 2-4 gb is enough

[-] new_guy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure if the average Joe should get by with only 8-16 GB of RAM. This is only the case today because we off-loaded so much of our applications to the Cloud.

If we care about running our applications with our own devices and reclaim the ownership of our data we should advocate to be able to get as much RAM we want.

[-] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

That is true of course, all I meant to say is that using a web browser shouldn't demand more than 8 GB of RAM. On Linux, with zswap, you can probably get away with it. On Windows? Probably a horrible experience (the persistent horrors of Windows aside).

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 34 points 2 days ago

Keeping all the money in billionaire's personal holdings is a very inefficient use of resources that would be much better allocated to fixing our collapsing roads, bridges, public transport, health system, education, justice system, elections and media.

[-] BrownSugarBits@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

hand over?? what is this? communism??

Hell no. If he wants my ram, he can buy it from me

$10,000,000. per stick.

No no no. No.

They don't just get ownership. They taught us that isn't optimal.

You give him access to a VM he can use. For 5000 a month. It's for his benefit.

[-] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 14 points 1 day ago

Having billions of dollars tied up in personal fortunes, where they just sit idle most of the time, is an inefficient use of the world's money supply, and who would have thought Altman would be the one to point it out?

[-] Magnum@infosec.pub -1 points 1 day ago

You think they have money sitting idle?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

Being used for nothing but creating more of itself is a form of idleness, yes.

[-] Magnum@infosec.pub -1 points 1 day ago

Aren't they like investing into companies which the companies use to do business, which then is supposed to return profits and grow the initially invested capital? Like I mean its not just randomly growing by sitting idle anywhere....

This RAM is your RAM

This RAM is my RAM

[-] notso@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago

I'd like to RAM a chainsaw down Sam Altman's throat.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

I hope he get RAMMED by a RAM truck.

Time to take AI down ! , EVERWHERE

[-] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 12 points 2 days ago

The monkey's paw curls Sam gets all the RAM, however, people now have no more internet capable devices.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Supply seemed to be just fine until SOMEONE tried to monopolize it. I'm sure there's no correlation there though.

Who wants to go to a data center and liberate some RAM with me?

[-] you_are_dust@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I'd rather it be like the guy in Leprechaun that wished for the pot of gold and it was put inside his stomach.

This RAM is made for only me.

Yeah, RAM is only good for chatbots and has no other uses.

How would he feel if we did put it all in data centers, but banned him from using them in any way? Either he believes the stupidity he utters or he's a selfish twat.

[-] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 16 points 2 days ago

Billionaires represent the most inefficient allocation of resources possible, so really, he should set an example by relinquishing his personal wealth.

[-] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Or he could do at least one honorable thing in his life and commit seppuku

He should at least attempt to upload his big important brain to the cloud he loves so much. Any event these boobs attend should be filled with people asking: Why are you still meat?

I see them like a failed retention pond. Everything flows towards them, including all the shit and dead bodies. They're filled with filth and you can't see the bottom but no one will touch them because of the smell and the lawyers.
