[-] KimLuff@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 hours ago

Wow lots of flexing over a transphobe. I'll celebrate when she actually consistently votes any better than her predecessors. Choke on your hope pill

[-] Magnum@infosec.pub 5 points 6 hours ago

Wtf I didn't know the americans propped up dead people in their palarment. The guy on the right is about to turn into a mummy

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

Probably stems from the practice in early photography of posing the dead in "lifelike" ways. Y'know, just kinda carried over into the "leadership".

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 1 points 6 hours ago

If the curse lasts, Andrews will hold it for at least 30 years too - how terrible.

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 19 points 15 hours ago

Holy shit, Strom was worse than Moscow Mitch.

What the fuck? Strom Thurmond was in office at 100 years old? Am I reading this right?

EDIT: "A staunch opponent of civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s, Thurmond completed the longest single-person Senate filibuster, at 24 hours and 18 minutes in length, in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957."

Would you look at that... He was something of an expert at overstaying his welcome

EDIT 2: Thurmond died from complications of old age in his sleep at 9:45 p.m. on June 26, 2003, at a hospital in his hometown of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was 100 years old. After lying in state in the rotunda of the South Carolina State House in Columbia, his body was carried on a caisson to the First Baptist Church for services, at which then-Senator Joe Biden of Delaware delivered a eulogy,[319] and later to the family burial plot in Willowbrook Cemetery in Edgefield, where he is interred.[320][321] Thurmond died on the same day that the United States Supreme Court handed down its Lawrence v. Texas decision, which legalized gay sex across all U.S. states.[322]

Folks, if you didn't know this guy, you gotta read his wiki. It's hilarious. It's like he lived only to see everything he hated happen before his eyes.

Yes. This is the example I bring up when people are hopeful that evil politicians die in office. These assholes have a way of hanging on way past their expiration date.

[-] Smoogs@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

well if you like your job and gives you purpose, people hang on. sadly he enjoyed racism and thought of that as his purpose

[-] Squirrelknight@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Evil seems to have the ability of pickling an individual. Black hearts seem to beat longer than bleeding hearts.

Another famous example would be Henry Kissinger, who also managed to reach 100.

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 15 points 15 hours ago

Again, can we for the love of god revisit age limits for all government positions

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 8 points 17 hours ago

I'd love for his grave site to become a public urinal. I imagine it's probably in the middle of nowhere though.

[-] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 13 hours ago

Even better chance to not get caught "watering the tombstone"

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 11 points 15 hours ago

What is that thing on the right!?

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 21 points 12 hours ago

The man who holds the record for longest single-speaker fillibuster in history. He bravely spoke for over 24 hours straight to prevent the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Then he stayed in the Senate for another 46 years - though he changed parties from Democratic to Republican because 1960s Democrats weren't racist enough.

[-] NoDignity@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago

Strom Thurmond is basically the prime example of needing age limits for elected office, that shithead didn't retire from the senate until he was 100 then died a few months later. He was pro segregation and pro jim crow laws while claiming he wasn't racist just a supporter of "states rights" just like other lowlife white supremacists and still somehow kept that senate seat until freaking 2001. By the end there he was basically a way more evil crypt keeper making sure to do as much damage to humanity as he could on his way out.

Raped the fifteen year old working for them, got her pregnant and legislated against her his whole life, too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strom_Thurmond#First_daughter_with_Carrie_Butler

Thurmond's colleague, Senator Patty Murray, stated in 1996 that Thurmond, who was 91 years old at the time of the incident, tried to fondle her breast in an elevator.[316] According to The New York Times, Thurmond had been known for fondling women in Senate elevators, and did not realize Murray was a fellow senator.

Whoopsie!

Next time we primary her transphobic ass, but for now it'll have to do.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago

Wasn't it someone calling her a transwoman?

She supported trans rights.

While she does not support surgical intervention for minors, Andrews does believe in socially affirming the professed gender identity of young children before transitioning them into a medical protocol around puberty that could include hormone blockers and cross-sex hormones.

I think most people agree that irreversible cosmetic (aka not medically necessary) surgeries shouldn't be done on children underage.

Is anyone actually saying they should? So that's a moot point.

As for her recent comment on sports.

“So, I want you to hear me loud and clear. I don’t support [transgender women] playing women’s sports. And I don’t support and haven’t ever performed gender surgery for minors.”

https://www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article317625274.html

She does say "women". Not girls.

She's not saying children should be banned from playing sports.

And as for adult women , trans or cis , playing on men's teams, ...this is a complex topic with no simple response.

So I disagree with giving a blanket statement. But maybe she hasn't thought about it much or looked into it more.

Quite a lot of gender divided sports are because historically , women were excluded. So they started their own. Or because men were afraid a woman would beat them. (Oh the indignity!) Not because there are biological differences that make them too different to compete.

Like golf. Archery, billiards, chess, and probably a ton more.

I'm not saying we give her a free pass. I'm saying she's not "anti trans" just because she doesn't endorse every complex issue relating to trans people.

We need to keep watch and see how she proceeds with policies and trans rights.

I realize that there is a lot of anti trans rhetoric right now. And it's not just talk. It's leading to insane bathroom laws, and banning kids in sports. Requiring genital inspections.

It's dangerous. Harmful.

But she's not a Republican obsessed with trans women/girls.

Her perspective likely comes from a place of knowledge about human bodies. And likely a lack of knowledge about changes in bodies as a result of hormone transitioning. Because there still isn't much research on this.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

Daannii, you may not realize this, but The State edited out exactly what so many people find so offensive.

The actual, unedited quote:

“I want you to hear me loud and clear: I don’t support biological men playing in women’s sports, and I don’t support and haven’t ever performed gender surgery for minors,” Andrews said in a new ad.

The ad itself, for anyone who wants to hear it from Dr. Andrews directly.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Maybe she said "biological men" to clarify since conservatives seem to genuinely be confused about trans designations.

I realize it's inappropriate to refer to a transwoman as a "biological male". That's something a trans person can disclose to their doctors if needed but it isn't really anyone else's business. And such a term is dehumanizing as it denotes someone as a "specimen".

I don't think Andrew's was talking about a specific person. Just clarifying for ignorant people.

But I don't know for sure. Maybe someone should ask her.

I just try to give people the benefit of the doubt when they haven't shown any prior behavior that would indicate discrimination tendencies.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

Everything you say is possible, though increasingly doubtful: she's already faced more than enough shit for it to walk it back or to clarify further if she wanted. Also, the unedited quote I provided was her clarification. I sincerely hope she proves you right.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

To be honest, I don't have high hopes for her. She's more Republican-lite than actual progressive from what I have seen so far. And I didn't like the ad.

I hope to be proven wrong.

[-] auntieclokwise@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

In a state like South Carolina, Republican lite is probably about the best you can expect, at least for now. Remember that alot of these people have been indoctrinated since they were kids to think anything even a little bit left is from the devil and will lead to poverty and oppression. Undoing that takes time.

[-] DamnianWayne@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

If Alabama can elect a trans woman, South Carolina can do better than a transphobe.

[-] Ariselas@piefed.ca 57 points 1 day ago

I hope she is getting the seat reupholstered, not sure it could be adequately cleaned out

Yet another race we were told was neck-in-neck and the Democrat came out +5. Anyone else notice that?

My habit of typing as I speak IRL has burned me yet again. 🙄

"neck-n-neck"

Pretty sure I've made that same boner many times lately.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 7 points 17 hours ago

Only coming up +5 during this election does mean it was that close. This was a historic election for shifting towards Democrats. +5 this election basically means it would have been very close, or she would have lost, during any other election.
