The Democrats may have won, but clearly it's time for new younger leadership. AOC for Senate Majority Leader, Greg Casar for House Majority Leader.

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

Speaker* but yes agree wholeheartedly

[-] DarkSideOfTheMoon@lemmy.world -2 points 4 hours ago

At least Schumer helped the party to get this big win. All progressives underperformed and a progressive pick cost Florida. If Dems, did want to keep winning need to get away from progressives. Numbers are clear

I would like to limit AIPAC's control of the US please. Out schools, bridges, services need repairs too. I would like my tax dollars to stay here, thank you.

Now that conservatives are OK with tariffs, we should impose a massive tariff on Israel, and outright prohibit their political donations. IRS audit every congressperson annually.

[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 17 points 16 hours ago

Any self respecting leader in their position would step aside.

Talarico was also Schumers pick.

At the Wildflower retreat, James Talarico, a youthful-looking state legislator in Texas, had delivered a five-minute speech for the assembled crowd on the importance of storytelling in campaigns. Mr. Schumer was smitten. He told at least two attendees afterward that he wanted to get Mr. Talarico to run for the Senate.

Horrible NYT link

Schumer heard the first part of tallericos speech, the centrist religious appeal part... But he has another part he throws in while the dummies stay in the afterglow of the part they wanted to hear. The part where he says some pretty progressive shit.

We'll see which side he governs from or if Hus mouth says Bible verses while his hands get universal healthcare implemented and citizens united overturned.

Anyway, Fuck Susan Collins' trembling corpse for eternity.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 25 points 15 hours ago

That's nice, he also HATES Progressives more that MAGAs. He kneecapped Angi Nixon's senate campaign, or she could have been another flip.

And we should never forget that he destroyed Al Franken's career:

The Case of Al Franken

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 16 hours ago

Oh fuck, well in that case he should be Senate Majority Leader for the rest of his life. Good point.

[-] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 17 points 21 hours ago

Chuck Schumer? More like Cuck Schumer

[-] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I'll preface this by saying I'm not American

Both of these men have had several moments in the last few years when I thought they mean well, and it's quite wholesome to see grampa Schumer get all enthusiastic about fighting fire with fire every now and then

But the fact of the matter is that Schumer is too old for this sort of rough water and that neither of these are the loudest voice in their party and not even in their respective chambers. I think AOC speaks up easily ten more often than Jeffries, for example. I hardly hear anything from him.

What complicates matters here is the oddity of having the House and Senate leaders quit when their party just won so decisively. The Dems being such a big tent makes it hard for an uninformed person to see that while the Dems won, the style and direction of Schumer and Jeffries did not, and that they're not suitable leaders in a time of crysis. Things need to be fixed without relying on bipartisanship or the mercy of your opponent, because the GOP, from where I see it, never gives an inch. But I assume the Dems don't want to make it look like there's already instability within their party, fresh after a win, which is ironic, because Schumer and Jeffries not quitting on their own terms may lead to a nasty leadership challenge.

I don't know if Jeffries, but certainly Schumer, much like Biden, seems to be melancholic for the better days of the pre-Trump era, when the worst of the worst did very much exist in the GOP but were less dominant or less prone to breaking the law to impose their awful views. I do frequently see Americans online say they'd rather have Bush, Romney or McCain back than have Trump. I agree. Those were... tolerable. They were certainly less corrupt.

Older senators like Schumer seem to yearn for news headlines of unity and pride. But that's just not possible right now. These next few years are not the time for unity. They're a time for justice, reform and securing democracy.

Most GOP members simply don't even belong in politics, to state the obvious (Hegseth...) and have only bad intentions. In my own country I tend to think of seats that are occupied by the far-right opposition as vacant, because they're simply impossible to reason with

[-] Cherries@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

There is always a way to spin anything. Chuck could easily step aside while saying, "It's time for me to pass the torch to the younger generation." Jeffries could step aside while saying, "I have helped lead the Dem party where it is today and I'm excited to see where it will go from here." You are correct in that the Dem voter base is screaming for new leadership, so thr best way to show solidarity is for these two AIPAC stooges to step aside willingly.

Because of the threat of MAGA and how poorly Dem leadership has been combating that threat, unity and compromise are no longer tenable. Schumer and Jeffries have shown they are conciliatory to fascists and the voter base is extremely unhappy about that. The best thing for the party right now is for the Progressive wing to loudly distinguish themselves from the unpopular Centrist wing or else the pendulum will swing back and we'll get the Fourth Reich.

[-] FrogmanL@piefed.social 15 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

For Schumer, definitely. For Jeffries, probably. Jeffries has only been leader since 2024. Before that it was Pelosi we have to ‘thank’.

[-] 8oow3291d@feddit.dk 19 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

“The American people don’t want us to get even. They want us to get things done on their behalf because life is way too expensive,” Jeffries said.

The whole vibe from Jeffries is that there should be no consequences for criminals. Fuck that. With a spoon.

That is exactly how you got the second Trump administration.

[-] Squirrelknight@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

And before the midterms he was saying "what can we even DO to oppose the republicans?" to democratic voters.

He'll always move the goalposts to wherever he needs to never actually DO ANYTHING to oppose republicans. His donors don't want that, after all.

[-] anarcockworkorange@anarchist.nexus 5 points 17 hours ago

OK, He'll be second in line on the chopping block.

Remember this?

They could have chucked those things across the room, wiped their feet on them, sat on them, but they chose to sit obediently and allow themselves to be photographed with them.

These are not the men for the job.

The MAGA comedy act of Schmuck & Jeffries has been onstage long enough, and they were never funny in the first place. Time to give them the hook, and drag them off-stage.

Spoiler: they’re in charge of enabling the fascism

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 23 points 22 hours ago

hakeem was pretty blatant by meeting with kushner behind doors, a few weeks prior to the election.

[-] MalReynolds@piefed.social 15 points 21 hours ago

You know who protects against fascism? People, educated people like democracy needs, the 1% will always promote fascism.

[-] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 10 points 21 hours ago

Going "Aww shucks" and writing sternly worded letters, isn't good enough.
