I’m on mastodon, but since I was never very interested in Twitter either, I don’t use it much. I feel like that a reddit style forum is easier to start using because you don’t have to be “somebody” in order to participate.

Got an idea for next month's banner?
Forum style is good because it feels semi anonymous. People dont really care who is making the post/comment they only care for the subject matter.
Same!
It's worth checking out fediservices.nz, who I'm mentioning not (just) because they are providing hosting for us here, but also because they run a bunch of fediverse sites, and their site just lists and links to them so it's easy to see what there is.
One I like is bookwyrm, a goodreads type site. There's an NZ instance at bookworm.nz (linked on the above site).
Other than mastodon, and perhaps the chat service Matrix, they are all pretty immature so expect bugs and not a lot of users.
Thanks for the suggestion I like bookworm nz and can see myself using this often. I wrote some reviews for a few of my favorite books and look forward to posting more when I finish the book im currently reading.
I've used Matrix for ages, in fact it's the chat service my wife and I use (self hosted on my home server) to chat. Other than that and dipping my toes in to Mastadon, I've not used any others.
I've had a Mastodon account since 2016 and a separate pixelfed account, and now a separate Lemmy account. I'm not sure about linking them all up yet but have moved to the local server to make supporting them a bit simpler.
Love the idea of a rec thread, crafty type progress pics are my favourite thing to trawl on places like Pinterest.
I tried Mastodon back in 2017 but Twitter-style social media was never really my cup of tea. Probably not going to try pixelfed as I haven't been into Instagram since like 2019 but I'm definitely keeping an eye on Friendica and similar replacements for Facebook's services!
It's not ActivityPub but I'm planning on spinng up a private Matrix instance at some point but that'll be more for bridging all the messengers I use together.
I’ll be trying kbin as well. Apparently Reddit admins tried to ban their sub and it seems to be the most recommended alternative at the moment.
I don't understand what kbin is. From what I gather it's like lemmy but it doesn't show posts from other servers?
From understanding they all make use of the fediverse (or fedverse?) and can all be connected. I’m new to all this as well and it’s not quite clear to me either!
One of the big weaknesses of Mastodon is it does a poor job of showing replies to posts, if you're on a small server. A lot of replies don't get federated, so you won't see them. It's rubbish. I spent weeks trying other software until I found one that proactively goes to the original server and retrieves replies on the fly, when you view the thread. It is called 'Akkoma' and it is fantastic.
https://mycrowd.ca/ is the Akkoma instance that I settled on.
Another major limitation of Mastodon is all replies are shown in a single long list, unlike lemmy. For this reason I quite like Friendica. Friendica has a UI that is reminiscent of Facebook. https://venera.social/ is a good instance. However now that Lemmy/Kbin is blowing up I feel less need for it.
I've switched completely from twitter to mastodon after they let the sink in (but I was mostly just a lurker there, it was never really my type of thing) and now I've more or less moved completely from reddit to here (will definitley check out fediservices.nz too). So far I'm liking what I see
