A gull found stuck in a George St grate may have exposed a design flaw in Dunedin's infrastructure, a conservationist says.

Those who found it had already phoned the Dunedin City Council which said the stuck seagull "wasn't their jurisdiction to go and save it", she said.

I love that half our countries news is about random animals.

From the pictures it seems that tree pit doesn't need to be so deep. If they fill it in so the animals can hop out easily it should be fine.

It does look absurdly deep, but maybe that's the angle and lighting.

I love that half our countries news is about random animals.

Only while everyone is off work for Christmas. When everyone gets back to work there will be plenty of politics and workplace accidents in the news again.

Kinda shitty response from the council, but good on the people who took the time to get it out of there.

Does look like a real design flaw though, for animals getting stuck like this, but also for rubbish accumulating there over time.

Got a gull stuck in the decorative grill on the front of our office once. Spent the whole morning shrieking, seemed like he was stuck. Called the council, SPCA, building owner, nobody wanted to help.

Then after a few hours the bastard quite calmly hopped up and flew out.

That gull was a dick. We named him Greg.
