It is absolutely this, in my opinion, and for the same reason as Maths. It pretty much applies to any and all specializations that intersect in our average lives.
A reasonable person might read a medical journal describing the exact set of symptoms they're facing, but being reasonable, they rightfully acknowledge they lack the expertise required to utilize that information and apply it, so they seek a professional.
Another human being who they have been conditioned to believe has dedicated a special amount of effort (and often also characterized as possessing extraordinary traits that allowed/empowered said special effort to work for them in this arena) to the pursuit of mastery in a discipline that they themselves believe they do not have the inclination/ability/time to achieve.
I.e. They go to see a Doctor.
This is the pattern, and for something like medicine, it is both very true, very apt, and very neat and straightforward: Not everyone has the baseline capacity/capital/time/what-have-you to get through Medical school.
Now extrapolate that to "advanced mathematics", and it remains largely true. It does take a very discrete set of parameters to produce a master Mathematician that not everyone has.
But the pattern starts to break down the more granular you get. Not all specializations are created equal, the world has changed, and many aspects of complicated disciplines have ever increasingly intertwined with our daily lives.
Mathematics still works for the next example, but it's time to get back to coding and error messages.
Computer Programming can be a vast and deep discipline, and has a lot of the same baggage as Medicine.
Especially in the minds of those who were born and experienced significant portions of their lives before computing made up more of our lives, and those who were born after computing was commodified down to interfaces that do not require all that expertise.
That leaves us with people, who are stuck interacting in/with systems they conditioned to believe would be beyond them to understand, and they always need an expert.
The joke of course, is that we're all humans within the same capacity bands, and there's as much room between complete ignorance and adept usage, as there is between adept usage, and total mastery.
But most don't dare take that step out of ignorance, they don't think they can be Masters, so what's the point of just being Adept, and that's assuming they even know or believe adepthood is possible.
So instead of reading the error message and thinking back to their interactions with the system and trying to fashion some sort of working model...

It's worse than that. She had a mental health crisis and what the article terms a "street incident". The article makes it clear that she was in crisis, visibly, and faced a strong language barrier.
So what happened to her? Not a hospital. Not care. She was put in a county jail. For SIX MONTHS.
THEN comes ICE. She's already spent six months in a confusing hellscape where even the cruelty is as ad-hoc and unstructured as everything else besides the actual routines of confinement.
Six. Fucking. Months.
After ICE did what they did...she didn't even wander. She was so broken, confused and lost that she just treated it as a continuation of her confinement:

Making good points badly, to such a degree that your (presumably personally and deeply held beliefs) come across as the inverse of your intention.
Because neither the erosion of effective action nor the rise of performative activism, occurs in a vacuum.
In fact, both play into the hands of those who benefit from said erosions, and who have guided the communual discourse in such a way that even the very act of discussion in regards to the topics most important to the themes at hand, is apt to fracture into a mixture of ineffective action, which itself can only come across as "performative activism" to those approaching the very same problems, from a different angle.
Like, are you even aware of how poignant your gun violence example is, how your approach can easily be misconstrued as the same performative activism (an angry, contrarian, lone wolf call to sanity online is practically a trope at this point)?

The way I thought it all shaked down (and what I thought was established fan canon long ago), was that the Cinnerbar Mansion experiments were an attempt to clone Mew.

And they never got to perfect a Mew, because the next stage in the experiment precluded that.
That they achieved Mewtwo, after Ditto, and the scope of the project rapidly changed when the "benefactor" (sue me, there's still kids picking up the games, I ain't spoiling it, but we know who we're talking about) bankrolling the project got the initial "power level readings".
So they pumped Mewtwo, their perfect IV monstrosity, with both forced and artificial EVs, until what happened, happened, and Mewtwo had to go hang out in that cave to get some peace.

Same way you wrote a ridiculous yet thoroughly engaging "Elden Ring Journal" here on Lemmy (made my night lol).
That capacity for real people to have both the spaces and freedom to display themselves, whether that was them at their most intent focused in one community, or them at their most relaxed and silly in another, was one of the meta-qualities that their system didn't intend by design but which became hands down the emergent quality that allowed them to even get to being what they became post 2005 and pre-July 1, 2023.
The moment they started doing all the fuckery you rightly noted, they killed the conditions in which that emergent property could thrive.
Reddit doesn't just no longer feel the same because the system's changed, but because the changes were done with no regards for what it did to the organization's spirit, which for a web related property, has always been something defined by its users, and not the creators, all the way back to the first BBS.
I am one of the 90%. I have lurked in online spaces before and since Reddit, watching, and only occasionally sharing any thoughts.
Not because I'm antisocial (ok, maybe a little bit), but because there was always enough spirit to absorb, enough humanity to just bask in the display of shared thoughts between other people, that enough satisfaction was derived just reading, nodding along, and whispering opinions I had no intention to post.
That spirit, that humanity, is utterly dead in Reddit (and most of social media these days), and it behooves us all who care to not see it forever gone, to not see it driven away completely in the face of a dead Internet, to do something about it.
I guess I need to post more on Lemmy until I can return to invisibility, ugh.
