Why the fuck did they think coming back was a good idea? The internet is changing for the worse and xitter is one of the places that is making it worse, abandoning that shithole is a step into making things better

This alarm's being rung for over a year now, so "calling it now" means finally reading the writing on the wall

After digging through the codebase, Kamila traced the freeze back to the way E16 handled overly long file names. When a window title was too long and needed to be truncated, the algorithm responsible for doing so had no iteration limit. So it would spin indefinitely, locking up the desktop entirely.

Ah, no wonder it went unfixed for so long, most people would just rename stuff and carry on

Pics https://ibb.co/album/sbjqwT (the weird triangle on the lower piece was fixed afterwards)

I've been messing around with a press mold so I can make hex tiles using paper mache, or something else that is easily and cheaply available.

The problem I've been having is with the sides, which rarely get properly pressed. What should I do to possibly fix this, regarding the model?

Right now, I've only experimented with minced paper and water, which led to satisfying results. What other things could I add or try for this kind of press? What could I apply on the mold to make the paper less likely to stick? Vaseline doesn't make a difference.

We don't have an Ask Historians yet, so I think this is the best place to ask at the moment

I've been thinking of self hosting a mastodon (gotosocial, more specifically) + a matrix server on an old computer I have, but sometimes I might need to turn it off for 2 days or more (not to mention some energy or internet outages that might happen here)

I suppose with the mastodon part the server will properly sync and download whatever's been missing, but I'm not entirely sure that'll be the case with matrix. If anyone sent me a DM on there while my server was down, would it get through after it was back up?

funny part about "Kamala campaign can't target men" is that they can't target men because they refuse to employ the crass humor needed to effectively target the kind of men they currently fail to target. They know what they have to do, they simply aren't strong enough to do it.

They lost because they won't say slurs. People are not ready for this conversation.

Hadn't thought of this before, but it makes sense. Men just won't take you seriously if you're offended by or scared of words.

Straight from one of the shittier parts of the fediverse.

With that level of brainrot, the dude must have some reeeeeeally weird kinks.

I remember seeing a FB post ages ago, of some dude saying that he went to Japan to tattoo "God is faithful" in Japanese because he didn't trust local tattooists to write it right. The post was a photo of the tattoo on the dude's arm.

Someone pointed that it said something along the lines of "idiot stranger".

Mr "I went to Japan" complained that was impossible, because he went to Japan.

The other person posted a screenshot of the kanji on google translate and lo, "idiot stranger"

Party pooper here - https://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/4923/was-this-quote-on-a-clay-tablet-about-unruly-kids-written-by-an-assyrian

Quoting the answer from there:

In summary:

  • I have not shown whether or not this is a quote from an ancient work.
  • I've shown that the quote, and its provenance has survived largely intact since the 1920s at least.
  • In particular, it has been traced far further back than Sir Isaac Asimov's book (as suggested by others here).
  • However, I have shown it was not both Assyrian and from 2800 BC. It may have in Akkadian, a related language, from 2800 BC, but that is earlier than any references I found so I find it unlikely. It might have been Sumerian.
  • IMHO, given the dubious provenance of the source, a more likely scenario is that it is either a true quote, oddly translated, from a much later date, or invented in the early 20th Century.

Not exactly life hacks, but shortcuts that can help computer users:

  • holding CTRL and pressing the arrow keys will move the text cursor whole words, instead of 1 character at a time. Also works with Delete and Backspace
  • CTRL + Home will move the cursor to the start of the file, CTRL + End to the end of the file or textbox.
  • Windows 10 users can use the Xbox bar to record their screens. By default, the shortcut is Windows button + Alt + R

For anyone that uses the sink to wash dishes, have a net/grid to cover the hole. Once it's full, just pick it up and dump the contents in your food trash.

You can use any type of soap to create barriers that ants will avoid. If you plug a hole with some soap (try a piece of soap bar that's wet/soft), the ants won't reopen it.

Do you suppose stupid bigots will avoid transplants because they don't want to become plants?

Millenium Falcon? That old bucket of bolts that needs constant maintenance even while flying? Hard pass. Now, a shiny new Corellian YT2000, on the other hand...
