Animals seem immune. There was some throwaway line in episode 2 about how one of the survivors told a giraffe to shoo and go away but it completely ignored her.

Okay, þ is not going to happen, just say th.

Anyway, I did try V before Nim and found it way too unstable (which is corroborated by every other blog post talking about it). I also couldn't get the language server to work no matter what I did, it just fails to start which isn't a good first impression. This isn't even mentioning all the drama behind the scenes for this language.

I was in both communities at the time... Only the OGs will remember when the only thing we had to go off of Elden Ring was a random rumor that called it Great Rune.

This has huge potential and I already love the UI they have, but it's still in very early alpha if anybody is wondering. There aren't any transitions or animations or anything yet, and the export button just rick rolls you (yes, really).

It's for alternate Reddit front-ends and rarely ever works.

Just finished filling it. Pretty good survey overall, I hope they get the message that we really want more work in 2D physics.

I've bought the $1 tier to get into shaders and I sort of agree. I took the Unity 2D course when I was starting out game development and it was excellent, really gave you everything you need to know to understand and learn how to make real games.

I'm 75% through the shader course (which is fairly short, like ~2 hours long) and it's just okay. It gives you a decent introduction on how shaders work, teach you a few simple effects like distortion and dissolving and color swapping, then you're on your own. I didn't feel like I learned enough to be confident making my own shaders and I still only have a surface level understanding of it. Not great for a paid course, I'm starting to think that's the reason it was only $1 in the bundle.

I still 100% recommend their 2D unity course but it seems like how good the course is depends on the instructor. Rick is the best instructor they have, the new ones aren't cutting it. Maybe I should make my own tutorials because a lot of Godot offerings currently are lacking.

This is awesome! Wish I could run something like this on my car's tablet, then we could go full circle.

I'm aware that people are slowly grouping up to one specific community per topic but I don't think this means there isn't an issue with communities being fractured. Using a third party tool to gauge which communities are popular also isn't a great solution. Just searching Linux shows:

I don't think each one of these communities has a different audience. It's the same audience, but there isn't an obvious answer for which one to visit or post in.

Creating GodotOS - Devlog 2 (popcar.bearblog.dev)

Going into some more depth on making the new features and the troubles I faced along the way, while giving advice to future projects looking to try the same thing.

Also, I announced in the blog post that GodotOS will be open source when it releases! Look forward to it.

Great video comparing the built-in Godot physics to the Godot-Box2D and Godot-Rapier2D extensions.

If you've ever played around with 2D physics you'd know that Godot's implementation is... Really lacking and jittery. The two extensions are still relatively new so they're not as feature complete, but they're already a huge improvement. Cheers to https://appsinacup.com/ for creating both extensions.

Creating GodotOS - Devlog 1 (popcar.bearblog.dev)

Some people asked for a devlog, so here's my experience working on GodotOS (not an actual OS by the way, just a program that resembles one). There's a new preview video inside and some more info on the project.

I'm making a fake operating system interface in Godot called GodotOS. Here's a sneak peek!

This is around 4 days of work. GodotOS is a proof of concept so I can learn more about Godot's UI systems. It's going very well so far. Right now you can open, minimize, and close windows while browsing folders and text files in user://files/.

My next goal (aside from adding more functionality) is to have viewports in windows so you can play games in your game.

Casey Yano, one of the devs at MegaCrit (Slay the Spire devs) just released a blog post on his initial impressions for Godot after exploring it with their 3-week jam game Dancing Duelists

TextMeshPro is phenomenal though. I miss it. Please, just let me vertically center my auto-sizing min/max set font text into a clean rectangle.

I feel this. Still upset there's no toggle to vertically center text. I also generally agree that sprite/texture atlases more complicated to use than they should be. The rest of the blog post is pretty positive and insightful, it's a good read.

Thanks for all the answers, here are the results for the survey in case you were wondering how you did!

Edit: People working in CS or a related field have a 9.59 avg score while the people that aren’t have a 9.61 avg.

People that have used AI image generators before got a 9.70 avg, while people that haven’t have a 9.39 avg score.

Edit 2: The data has changed slightly! Over 1,000 people have submitted results since posting this image, check the dataset to see live results. Be aware that many people saw the image and comments before submitting, so they've gotten spoiled on some results, which may be leading to a higher average recently: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MkuZG2MiGj-77PGkuCAM3Btb1_Lb4TFEx8tTZKiOoYI

Hey everyone. I made a casual survey to see if people can tell the difference between human-made and AI generated art. Any responses would be appreciated, I'm curious to see how accurately people can tell the difference (especially those familiar with AI image generation)

It's just not very good compared to any other kart game. Aside from the fact that it's very dated, the driving is slow, the levels are wide and uninspired, the racing itself is very simple. SRB2Kart is another open source karting game and it's sooooo much better.

Rust was made about a decade ago, Source 2 wasn't a thing yet and there weren't many other engine options.

[-] popcar2@programming.dev 5 points 3 years ago* (last edited 3 years ago)

It really depends on what's being taught imo. If it's something purely text-based like programming then sure, I absolutely would prefer reading an article to watching a video. For most tutorials though I think there's benefit in seeing things done visually step by step. Most tools are visual, so learning stuff like 3D modelling or video editing through text can be difficult, but seeing someone do it in front of me makes everything click since I can see exactly what he did and don't have to read between the steps.
