Police released images showing the gunman wearing a hooded top opening fire before fleeing on a bicycle towards Central Park, with detectives offering a $10,000 reward for the man's capture.

The UHC company is a major player in US private healthcare, providing workplace health insurance as well as administering huge health care programs like Medicare and Medicaid for older and low-income people funded by state budgets.

The New York Times reported that Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7:00 am at the hotel in the Midtown district of Manhattan, with the CNBC broadcaster suggesting a silencer had been used. Police confirmed a shooting with officers swarming around the area near the hotel, a usually busy corner of Manhattan that would have been filled with commuters at the time of the shooting. Video footage showed officers performing CPR on Thompson before he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UHC, had revenues of $100.8 billion in the third quarter of the year.UnitedHealthcare's Employer and Individual products are used by almost 30 million people in the United States according to an investor presentation. Thompson's total compensation in 2023 was $10.2 million according to a regulatory filing.

#The company was due to hold an investor day in New York on Wednesday* at which Thompson was scheduled to deliver a keynote speech. The event was canceled, CNBC reported, and the company did not respond to an AFP request for comment.

The suspect was described as a white man wearing a hooded jacket, black face mask, black and white sneakers, and carrying a grey backpack.

Summary

The Satanic Temple will launch a religious program, HAIL (Hellion Academy of Independent Learning), at Edgewood Elementary in Marysville, Ohio, offering an alternative to the evangelical LifeWise program.

LifeWise, part of a growing "release time" religious instruction trend, removes students weekly for Christian teachings.

Critics argue it alienates non-Christian students and raises concerns about religious pluralism in schools.

The Satanic Temple's HAIL program emphasizes empathy, pluralism, and critical thinking in its program, removing students monthly.

I have been reading about the new OIDC system (since Element now has a QR code login). I can't seem to understand the purpose of it, as it seems that Matrix already has all of the features wanted, but more simple. Why would there need to be a new OIDC system, if signing in with services with Google or GitHub is already supported and configurable per homeserver? Why would regular user+password login need to be reimplemented, but now require a website to login instead of being able to login through something like a terminal?

At a conference and the nomination of Jared Isaacman hit the press just as our meeting was starting. The meeting was about his payments business, but after it ended I was leaving and shook his hand, offered him congratulations on the role and said I hope he brings transparency to the UAP issue. He said "I've been to space twice and can assure you there's no aliens up there, I think UAPs are either ours or an adversary's." So seems he's made up his mind without evaluating the evidence.

More people are looking to the skies right now. More people have cameras in their pockets right now.

Thank you to the posters who have the time, energy and knowledge to explain what we are actually seeing. From Space X to Venus some of us simply do not know what we are seeing.

Right now the debunking is the only way to wade through the natural excitement most folks have for the "unknown" to get to what's actually unidentifiable.

It's might seem tedious and repetitive right now, but people are reading and learning. Even if they aren't all posting.

Hello everyone. Im willing to take some heat on this because I think its important for everyone to understand what the current capabilities are of commercially available drones. People have a good understanding of what a DJI quad can do but it falls off pretty fast after that. I dont want to conflate drones and UAPs or feed into that narrative but we as a community need to understand what current drones are capable of so we can be more confident in our assessments. So with that in mind I present the following example of a civilian experimental drone. The main takeaways are a flight time of 14 hours and remote operations using a variety of means in excess of 5000km from the drone. These performance figures are down right shocking but they are the current cutting edge. The worlds various militaries likely have better if not at least similar performing equipment.

Archived version

Last month, hundreds of immigrant Chinese residents from the San Gabriel Valley just east of Los Angeles turned up outside a meeting of the Rosemead City Council. Many of them were wearing Donald Trump campaign apparel. They were there to protest the expansion of temporary shelters for single mothers facing domestic violence. A local far-right California State Assembly candidate, the Taiwanese American lawyer Long David Liu, had helped to mobilize the protesters. Many showed up just because they learned about the supposed dangers of the project circulating on the Chinese messaging app WeChat.

I was among a smaller group of counterprotesters rallying in support of the shelter proposal. We were outnumbered, surrounded, and harassed for hours by majority-Cantonese-speaking protesters. I was the only Cantonese speaker on our side, and I tried my best to reason with people even as some accused me of bringing in crime and endangering our communities. Our allies attending the city council meeting were eventually able to pass the measure, but only after a night of debate until four in the morning. They were also heckled by the protesters as they departed.

This type of right-wing mobilization by immigrant Chinese residents is not new in the San Gabriel Valley—the largest ethnoburb (a suburb with a large concentration of an ethnic minority group) for Chinese and other Sinophone diaspora in the nation. Temple City residents organized to successfully stop a proposal to convert a local motel into a shelter for the unhoused in 2017, followed by a similar outburst in the adjacent city of Arcadia in 2021. Protests have also sprung up in other immigrant Chinese communities nationwide. Earlier this summer, the first Chinese American New York City Council member from Brooklyn, Susan Zhuang, led a demonstration against emergency shelters for the unhoused in the ethnic enclave of Bensonhurst. Last year, Chinese residents in Brighton Park on the South Side of Chicago rallied against a planned migrant shelter.

These incidents reflect a dangerous trend in national politics: the growth of an organized Chinese American far right pushing for exclusionary policies around housing and increased policing in the name of “public safety,” which both the Democratic and Republican politicians are keen to support. And these communities are not just protesting—they’re also voting. Many heavily Chinese American areas shifted sharply to the right in the recent presidential election.

So I thought that BlueSky was set up just like Lemmy in that it was fully decentralized into a sort of "terrorist cell" structure that wasn't focused on profits, but then found out that BlueSky has a CEO. Since this is a business, what makes BlueSky fundamentally different from Twitter or Instagram?

I feel like so long as a social media platform exists through monetization (in some form or another private companies need to make money), we are ultimately replacing one dictator with another.

“We’ve begged for a seat at the table. We begged for funding. We’ve begged for national organizations, green organizations, big funders, to listen to us, support us,” said Roishetta Ozane, a Sulphur resident and founder of the Vessel Project of Louisiana. “And we said, if we had the funding and the resources, we could win this thing. We could save our communities.”

Those pleas have finally been heard. Millions of dollars from both private and public sources have poured into Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley” and other communities overburdened by pollution. The federal government has made $600 million available for environmental justice projects through the Inflation Reduction Act, but much of that money from the 2022 spending plan still hasn’t trickled into target communities.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has pledged $85 million for such efforts through its Beyond Petrochemicals campaign, including support for Louisiana-based environmental justice nonprofits Louisiana Bucket Brigade, Hip Hop Caucus and Rise St. James.
