A bill designed to give consumers more control over their data will be introduced into Parliament tomorrow, the minister of commerce and consumer affairs says.

Andrew Bayly says the Consumer and Product Data Bill will allow consumers to share their data, which will in turn allow banks, insurance, power and telecommunication companies to compete with each other.

Consumers would be able to compare products in real time, manage accounts across different providers simultaneously, and switch between providers seamlessly.

He said it would include penalties of up to $5 million for misuse by companies, and up to $1m for an individual who fraudulently used it.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said it was expected to be introduced at the end of last year when the draft was released in June.

The legislation will be applied gradually across the economy on a sector-by-sector basis, with banking the first sector to be designated.

Scams have been increasing in number and complexity with consumers here losing an estimated $200m a year.

Consumer NZ has said it would immediately prevent some scams, and had been in the United Kingdom for five years now.

Sir John Key and other directors of Palo Alto Networks are named in a lawsuit alleging they made false and misleading statements about the company’s products.

Key sold shares in the company last December for more than US$700,000

Key said the ‘copycat’ lawsuits were based on unproven allegations and had no merit.

Green co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick has used her first “State of the Planet” speech to accuse the coalition Government of privileging lobbyists and the wealthy, at the expense of workers’ health and the environment.

Surely all these people losing decent paying jobs will have no impact on the economy right? Definitely not a recession right?

Hi everyone,

Sorry, site seems to have been down from about 8pm last night through to about 7:30 this morning.

I spotted it last night and thought it was back up, but it seems some component wasn't so it was loading the pages but you couldn't do any actions.

It also means federation is behind because instances wouldn't have been able to contact us, and so that will be slowly catching back up. It may take a while because after a lot of downtime the instances will stop trying for a while.

This is such a bizarre thing to have such a blow up over. I don't use public transport, so I've never heard these announcements, are they really that bad?

I'm pretty sceptical about ground effect planes, there's a very good reason why they've never really taken off, despite so many countries and organisations giving them a try over the years, but I'd love to know what everyone else thinks.

The important thing to keep in mind is that there is a significant proportion of the population that wants this and is going to vote for right wing parties in order to stop the "trans agenda"

Trying to get my head around this system in our cafe. It's the relationship between the circulating pump and the ?bypass (above the red knob on the right) that is not making sense to me.

It just seems like the circulating pump is dragging the cold water around and around through the loops. It's doesn't look like other manifolds I've googled...

Jones is a controversial force in the new Government, with his nakedly pro-mining stance criticised for being anti-environment. His meetings with industry heavyweights, including those in the commercial fishing sector, have led to accusations of conflicts of interest.

In one instance, Jones, also the Fisheries Minister, asked officials to develop a Cabinet paper on overhauling cameras on boats, after a request from a fishing boss who is one of his biggest campaign donors. So how’s it going?

The residents of an island in Northland are grappling with an unusual problem - they have too many kiwi.

Seven kiwi captured near Waitangi, when their bush habitat was about to be cleared for pine forest, were released onto Moturoa island in the 1980s.

Since then, kiwi numbers on the island, near Kerikeri Inlet in the Bay of Islands, have grown into the hundreds - and that has put pressure on the limited habitat and food available for the protected birds.

As a result, 21 kiwi caught on the island were released in Opua State Forest on Friday, easing the island's population boom and boosting kiwi numbers on the mainland at the same time.

The operation would not have been possible even a few years ago but a massive pest control effort in Opua forest, which cloaks the hills behind Paihia, has made the area safe for the flightless birds.

"New Zealand will make a clear statement to the UN later this morning explaining its vote, indicating that while it supports enhancing Palestine's status at the UN, this does not amount to recognition of Palestinian statehood.
